Projects that broke ground before that date locked in the credit with roughly four years to finish. Projects starting today have to be placed in service by December 31, 2027 to claim it.
That turns contractor selection into a scheduling problem as much as a price problem. The cheapest bid is worthless if the crew can’t energize your array before the deadline. So this ranking weighs throughput, engineering depth, and interconnection track record alongside the usual quality signals.

The credentials are the real differentiator. The company holds NABCEP PV Installation Professional board certification — the industry’s benchmark credential for PV design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance — and is an Enphase Gold-level installer and authorized Silfab dealer, with a stated commitment to U.S.-made equipment. In a market where Foreign Entity of Concern sourcing rules now affect tax credit eligibility, a supply chain already built around domestic manufacturing is a practical advantage, not just a marketing line.
What stands out in their client history is the long tail of service. Customers describe systems installed a decade ago that still get proactive monitoring, unprompted warranty claims filed on their behalf, and repair work performed on arrays the company didn’t even install. For a 25-year asset, that matters more than the initial bid. They also run a dedicated USDA REAP grant practice for agricultural and rural small business clients — a program that can cover a meaningful share of project cost and that many general contractors simply don’t bother navigating.
Artisun is the most commercially specialized firm on this list, it doesn’t do residential at all. Founder Kirk Kreisel, a former Navy nuclear engineering officer with a commercial construction background, built the company around industrial-scale PV, and the portfolio shows it: Boulevard Brewing, Johnson County Community College, the Blue Springs School District, and a Park Hills manufacturing campus that took more than 4,000 modules across two factory buildings.
Solar Power World ranked Artisun sixth among all contractors working in Missouri in 2024 at roughly 4,519 kW installed and unlike most firms above it on that list, every one of those kilowatts is commercial and industrial. The company reports 90+ MW of commercial, industrial, and agricultural projects developed to date, with NABCEP-certified leadership and multi-state licensed master electricians on staff.
MC Power is a full-service EPC and electrical contractor rather than a solar installer that learned electrical work. That distinction shows up in the project mix: multi-megawatt municipal solar farms in partnership with the Missouri Public Energy Pool, industrial park development work, battery storage integration, and LED retrofits, on top of conventional commercial rooftop.
The company reports 90+ MW installed and has been named a Top Solar Contractor by Solar Power World in multiple consecutive years, including 2026. It also won Evergy’s Top Performing Trade Ally award for outstanding electrical contractor — a signal that interconnection paperwork with Missouri’s largest western utility is unlikely to be the bottleneck on your project.
They’re also unusually candid publicly about the operational side of solar ownership, publishing guidance on why remote monitoring alone doesn’t catch every fault and why O&M matters as much as installation. That’s a healthy sign in a sales-heavy industry.
StraightUp Solar describes itself as the most experienced turnkey solar design and installation firm across Missouri and Illinois, with more than 1,700 installations completed. Solar Power World placed it ninth in Missouri for 2024 volume at roughly 1,339 kW, serving both C&I and residential markets as a full EPC.
The nonprofit and small-business side of their practice is worth noting in 2026. Direct pay provisions let tax-exempt organizations — churches, nonprofits, school districts, municipalities — receive the 30% credit as a cash reimbursement rather than a tax offset. That’s a filing process, and working with a contractor who has done it before saves real money.
EES is a commercial-focused installer, a certified Ameren Trade Ally Partner, and an authorized contractor for Show Me PACE, Missouri’s Property Assessed Clean Energy program, which lets commercial property owners finance energy upgrades through a property assessment rather than a conventional loan. For a business that doesn’t want capital tied up in a roof, that’s a legitimately different financing path.
Their published case studies are more specific than most in this industry: an 86.4 kW array at Klance Unlimited covering roughly 87% of site electricity, a 40 kW system paired with a service upgrade at Logo Daddy in Hillsboro, and a 17 kW system at Crystal Heating & Cooling in Farmington quoted at a five-year payback. Whether or not those numbers translate to your building, a contractor willing to publish payback periods is one you can hold to a pro forma. Commercial project leads are NABCEP certified, and the team includes in-house project managers, engineers, and electricians.
Cromwell Solar has been installing solar since 1982, which is not a typo and not common. The firm keeps engineers, electricians, and certified installers on staff and works across both large commercial rooftop and ground-mount projects down to small business, school, and nonprofit systems.
Their most useful specialty is regulatory. Cromwell frequently installs the first solar array in a given town or utility territory, and they’ve built a practice around solar interconnection law and working with code officials to establish workable local rules. If your facility sits in a rural electric cooperative territory where nobody has done this before, that experience is worth more than a discount. They put typical business and farm payback in the five-to-eight-year range.

Since that first deadline has passed, any project you start now falls into the second track. Ask every bidder for a written energization date, not just an installation date — interconnection approval and utility meter swaps sit on the critical path.
Projects over 1 MW AC must also meet prevailing wage and apprenticeship requirements or the base credit drops to 6%. Foreign Entity of Concern sourcing rules now apply to equipment procurement as well. This is territory where your CPA needs to be in the room early.
Missouri’s net metering statute covers systems up to 100 kW. That is a small ceiling for commercial. Above it, you move to a qualifying facility tariff with very different export economics — Ameren Missouri, for example, credits net metering exports at a few cents per kWh seasonally rather than at retail, and unused credits expire after twelve months.
The practical consequence: oversizing a commercial array in Missouri is often a mistake. The best designs match production closely to on-site consumption rather than maximizing roof coverage. A contractor who proposes filling every square foot without showing you an hourly load analysis is optimizing their invoice, not your return.
Ameren Missouri ended its solar rebate program on December 31, 2023, and Evergy does not currently offer a utility-specific rebate. Net metering and interconnection remain, but the rebate era in Missouri is over. Be skeptical of any proposal whose pro forma still includes one.
