How To Cancel A Shopify Subscription Without Getting Billed Again

To cancel a Shopify subscription, log in to your admin as the store owner, go to Settings > Plan, click Cancel plan, select Cancel my plan and uninstall all apps, choose a reason, enter your password, and confirm. The cancellation takes about two minutes. Your store stays live until the end of the current billing cycle, then it goes offline.

Getting off Shopify cleanly takes longer than two minutes. Deactivating your store ends the Shopify subscription, but it does not stop apps that bill you directly, it does not cancel your domain renewal, and it does not refund what you have already paid. Merchants who click through the cancellation flow without doing the prep tend to find charges still landing weeks later.

This guide covers the exact steps on desktop and mobile, what to handle before you press the button, how account deletion differs from cancellation, what happens to your data and your domain afterwards, and when pausing is the smarter move.

What Canceling a Shopify Subscription Actually Does

Shopify has no separate “delete my account” button. Canceling your plan and deactivating your store are the same action, as Shopify sets out in its store deactivation documentation. A few things follow from that:

    • Your subscription ends at the end of your current billing cycle, not immediately.
    • Only the store owner can do it. Staff accounts, even ones with full permissions, cannot deactivate a store.
    • Shopify Support will not do it for you. For security reasons the store owner has to complete the flow personally.
    • Your store data is retained for two years, so a change of heart inside that window costs you nothing but a new plan.
    • Shopify Plus stores cannot be deactivated from the admin at all. That route runs through Plus Support.

    Before You Cancel: The Checklist

Everything on this list has to happen while you still have admin access. Once the billing cycle closes, the admin is gone and so is your ability to fix any of it.

    Export Your Store Data

Pull CSV exports of products, customers, orders and gift cards. This is the single most common regret among merchants who close a store in a hurry. Your data is preserved on Shopify’s side for two years, but you cannot get at it without reopening the store and paying for a plan.

    Download Your Theme

A purchased theme is licensed to the store you bought it for, not to you. Download a backup file before you close. If you want to use the same theme on another store you own, Shopify Support can transfer the license, but only if you ask.

    Sort Out Your Domain

Domain renewals are not canceled when you cancel your plan. If your domain renews before your store actually closes, you can still be charged for it. For a Shopify managed domain, either switch off automatic renewal or transfer the domain to another registrar. For a third party domain, remove it from the store and turn off auto renew with your registrar.

One detail catches people migrating to a new platform. Shopify’s HSTS policy stays attached to your domain for 90 days after deactivation. If the platform you move to does not serve HTTPS, visitors will see certificate warnings for those three months.

Cancel Apps That Bill Outside Shopify

Every app is uninstalled automatically when you cancel, and any outstanding usage charges are billed at that moment. That only covers apps billed through Shopify. Anything you subscribed to directly on a vendor’s own site keeps charging your card until you cancel it there.

Close Out Open Orders and Gift Cards

Subscriptions, preorders and other purchase options can leave you with obligations you can no longer fulfil once the admin is gone. Export your gift card CSV and settle any outstanding balances. Chargebacks are the awkward one: a cardholder can file one after your store is closed, and contesting it requires reactivating the store.

Expect a Final Charge, and No Refund

Cancellation triggers billing for outstanding app usage fees, transaction fees and shipping label charges. Shopify operates a strict no refund policy on subscription plans under section 5.10 of its Terms of Service, and that applies to plan cancellations, promotional pricing periods and annual prepayments alike. Cancel before your next billing date rather than after it.

How to Cancel a Shopify Subscription on Desktop

    1. Log in to your Shopify admin as the store owner and go to Settings > Plan.
    2. Click Cancel plan, or Cancel trial if you are still inside the free trial period.
    3. Review the alternatives Shopify offers at this point: a cheaper plan, the Pause and Build plan, or starting a new store. Skip past them if you are certain.
    4. Review your Shopify domains and pending charges on the next screen. Transfer any domain you want to keep. Then select Cancel my plan and uninstall all apps and click Continue.
    5. Choose a reason for the cancellation from the dropdown, add a comment if you want to, and click Continue.
    6. Optionally tick Save payment details for quicker store reactivation.
    7. Enter your password and click Cancel plan (or Cancel trial).

A confirmation email arrives shortly afterwards. Your store stays live until the end of the current billing cycle, then goes dark. If the email does not arrive, assume the cancellation did not go through and run the flow again.

How to Cancel a Shopify Subscription on Your Phone

    1. Open the Shopify app and log in as the store owner.
    2. Tap the menu icon, then Settings, then Plan.
    3. Tap Cancel plan or Cancel trial.
    4. Review the downgrade, pause and new store options, then the domain and pending charge summary.
    5. Select Cancel my plan and uninstall all apps and tap Continue.
    6. Pick a reason, tap Continue, enter your password, and tap Cancel plan.

The app version of this flow is less reliable than the desktop one, and merchants regularly report it stalling at the password screen. If it does, open the admin in a mobile browser and use the desktop steps instead. Do not assume a cancellation went through without the confirmation email.

How to Cancel a Shopify Plus Subscription

The self serve cancellation flow is not available on Plus. Contact Shopify Plus Support or your Merchant Success Manager and they will handle the deactivation. Plus stores are also ineligible for the Pause and Build plan, so a lower plan or a full close are the only two options. If you are weighing a rebuild rather than a shutdown, it is worth talking to one of the top Shopify Plus agencies before you cancel, since a Plus contract is usually harder to get back than it is to keep.

How to Delete Your Shopify Account and Store

“Cancel”, “deactivate”, “close” and “delete” all point at the same button in Shopify. There is no separate account deletion option, and there is no way to erase a store instantly. Deactivating is the delete route, and the data disappears on Shopify’s schedule rather than yours.

What Deleting Actually Removes, and When

Deactivation takes the storefront and admin offline at the end of the billing cycle. Store data sits in Shopify’s systems for two years after that, then it is deleted permanently and the store can no longer be reactivated. Your login email stays as a Shopify account so you can open other stores with it.

How to Delete Your Store Data Sooner

If you need the data gone before the two year mark, for privacy or compliance reasons, you can request erasure of your customers’ personal data through Shopify Support rather than waiting the clock out. Do this after you have taken your own CSV exports, because the request is not reversible.

How to Remove Yourself From a Store You Do Not Own

If you are staff rather than the owner, you cannot cancel or delete anything. What you can do is remove your own staff account from the store, or ask the owner to remove it. If the owner is a former employee or an agency that has gone quiet, ownership has to be transferred to you before any cancellation is possible.

How to Cancel Shopify App Subscriptions

App charges are the number one reason merchants keep getting billed after they thought they were done. There are two kinds:

    • Apps billed through Shopify. Uninstall the app from Settings > Apps and sales channels. Uninstalling cancels the recurring charge, and any usage charges accrued so far are billed on your next invoice. Canceling your plan uninstalls all of them automatically.
    • Apps billed by the vendor directly. These never touch your Shopify invoice, so uninstalling the app does nothing to the subscription. Log in to the vendor’s own site or check your card statement, and cancel there.

Work through your app list before you cancel the plan, not after, because once the admin closes you can no longer see which apps you had.

    How to Deactivate Shopify Payments

Shopify Payments is deactivated separately from your plan, under Settings > Payments. Do it only after your pending payouts have cleared and your chargeback window has settled, because deactivating early can leave funds in limbo. If you are closing the store entirely, deactivating the plan handles Shopify Payments for you, but pending payouts still process after the store is gone and you will have no admin to chase them from.

    What Happens After You Deactivate

    • Your storefront goes offline and admin access ends once the billing cycle closes.
    • Your data is guaranteed for two years. Reopen inside that window and the store comes back rather than needing a rebuild. After the data is deleted, reactivation is no longer possible.
    • Your myshopify.com URL is gone for good. You can name a future store the same thing, but that specific subdomain cannot be reused.
    • Custom domains disconnect. If you reopen later, you have to reconnect them manually under Settings > Domains.
    • Pending Shopify Payments payouts still process, but you will not have an admin to resolve problems with them.
    • Customers keep order visibility. Thank you and Order status pages upgrade automatically so buyers can still look up their orders.
    • Invoices can still arrive for third party charges, chargebacks, or other stores under the same account.

Pause and Build: The Cheaper Alternative to Canceling

If the store might come back, deactivation is usually the wrong tool. Shopify’s Pause and Build plan drops your subscription to $9 USD per month and keeps the store alive in a read only state.

Factor Cancel and deactivate Pause and Build
    Monthly cost $0 $9 USD
    Admin access No Yes
Storefront visible No Yes, checkout disabled
Data retention 2 years, then deleted Indefinite
Third party app billing Apps uninstalled Apps stay active and keep billing
Returning to selling Reactivate and pick a plan Pick a new plan

How to Pause a Shopify Store

Go to Settings > Plan, click Cancel plan, enter your password, click Cancel plan again to see the full option list, select Pause and build, and confirm.

Three caveats. Your checkout is disabled across every sales channel, including Point of Sale, discounts, gift cards and abandoned checkout recovery. Apps are not paused, so uninstall paid ones first or you will keep paying for tools you are not using. And your old plan does not survive the pause, so you pick a fresh plan when you come back.

    Troubleshooting Common Cancellation Problems

Why Won’t Shopify Let Me Cancel My Plan?

Almost always one of three reasons. You are logged in as staff rather than the store owner. You are on Shopify Plus, where the self serve flow is disabled. Or you cannot clear the two step authentication challenge that the cancellation screen requires. Fix the access problem first, then the flow works normally.

You Cannot Pass Two Step Authentication

Deactivation requires a full login as the store owner, including the two step challenge. If you have lost your phone or authenticator, try your backup authentication method first, then a saved recovery code. If you have neither, Shopify has a process for deactivating two step authentication when no method is available. Work through that first, then cancel.

The Pause and Build Option Is Not Showing

Three requirements have to be met: you are logged in as the store owner, your free trial has ended and you are on a paid plan, and the store is not on Plus. If all three are true and the option still does not appear, contact Support.

    You Were Charged After Canceling

Usually one of three things. An app billed outside Shopify that you never canceled at the vendor. A domain renewal that landed before the store actually closed. Or the pending charges that Shopify collects at cancellation for app usage, transaction fees and shipping labels. None of these are billing errors, and none of them are refundable.

You Cannot Find Your Store or Remember Your Login

Shopify’s account recovery tools cover both cases. There is a store lookup for merchants who have forgotten their myshopify.com URL, and a standard password recovery route for the login email.

You Changed Your Mind Before the Cycle Ended

Cancellation is reversible right up until the billing cycle closes. Go to Settings > Plan and click Reactivate plan. After the store has actually closed, you reopen it instead by logging in, clicking the re-open prompt, and choosing a plan.

    Shopify Cancellation FAQ

How Do I Stop Shopify From Charging Me?

Cancel the plan in Settings > Plan, then separately cancel any app subscriptions billed by the vendor rather than through Shopify, and turn off auto renewal on your domain. Canceling the plan alone stops the Shopify invoice, not the other two.

How Do I Cancel Auto Renewal on Shopify?

Shopify plans renew automatically and there is no toggle to switch that off while keeping the store open. The only way to stop the renewal is to cancel the plan, or to move to Pause and Build at $9 per month. Domain auto renewal is separate and lives under Settings > Domains.

Does Canceling Shopify Delete My Data?

Not straight away. Store data is guaranteed for two years after deactivation so you can reopen without rebuilding. It is deleted after that, and once deleted the store cannot be reactivated.

Do I Need to Cancel During a Free Trial?

Only if you have already selected a paid plan. If you are still on the trial and have not picked a plan, the account lapses on its own and no action is needed. If you did select a plan during the trial, you have to cancel manually to avoid the first charge.

    Will I Get a Refund?

No. Shopify’s no refund policy on subscription plans applies to cancellations, promotional pricing and annual prepayments. Time the cancellation before your renewal date.

Can a Staff Member Cancel the Plan?

No. Only the store owner can deactivate a store. If ownership sits with a former employee or an agency, transfer ownership before you try to cancel.

Can I Cancel Shopify by Email or Phone?

No. Support cannot deactivate a store on your behalf for security reasons, with the single exception of Shopify Plus, where deactivation is handled by the Plus team.

Why Can’t I Delete My Shopify Store?

Because there is no delete button. Deactivating the store is the closest thing Shopify offers, and the data is removed on a two year schedule after that. If the deactivation option itself is missing, you are either not the store owner or you are on Plus.

    Conclusion

The cancellation itself is a seven click flow. The part that costs merchants money is everything around it: the theme they did not download, the domain that renewed on schedule, the app subscription that was never billed through Shopify in the first place. Export your data, kill the external subscriptions, deal with the domain, and only then open Settings > Plan.

And if there is a realistic chance the store comes back, $9 a month on Pause and Build buys you a store that still exists, an admin you can still log into, and no two year clock counting down on your data. If the plan is to rebuild elsewhere rather than to stop selling, it is worth reading up on the top Shopify development agencies before you pull the plug on the store you already have.
