If you want one credential that says “cloud penetration tester” on the label, the GIAC Cloud Penetration Tester (GCPN) is the most direct answer, covering both AWS and Azure in one proctored exam. If you want to prove you can actually break into a tenant, Altered Security’s CARTP and HackTricks Training’s ARTE are the strongest practical picks for Azure and AWS, because you pass by compromising live cloud environments instead of answering questions.
This guide ranks the top cloud penetration testing certifications in 2026, with offensive, hands-on credentials ahead of vendor security certifications. Vendor exams from AWS, Microsoft and Google still matter, since they prove you understand the controls you will be testing, but they do not test attack skills. If you would rather study with a structured course first, see our list of the top cloud security training providers, and if you are hiring testers instead of becoming one, our guide to the top cloud penetration testing companies covers firms that do this work.
We checked every issuer’s own certification page for exam format, duration, platforms and published pricing in October 2026.

GCPN is issued by GIAC, the certification body that pairs with SANS training, and it is the only certification on this list whose title is literally “cloud penetration tester.” GIAC lists it as a Practitioner certification covering AWS and Azure. The exam is a single proctored test with 75 questions, a 2 hour time limit and a 70% passing score.
The matching course is SANS SEC588: Cloud Penetration Testing. SANS lists it as 6 days instructor-led or 36 hours self-paced, with 24 hands-on labs and roughly half of class time spent in them. The course goes beyond the exam’s two clouds into Microsoft 365 and Kubernetes. SANS listed Virtual OnDemand access at $8,780 on its site in October 2026, and GIAC does not show the exam price on the certification page.
The tradeoff is that GCPN tests knowledge rather than a live compromise, and the SANS route is the most expensive on this list. It suits employers that already budget for SANS and want a recognized name on a contract or a résumé.
Best for: Testers with a training budget who need a widely recognized, multi-cloud credential.
CARTP (Certified by Altered Security Red Team Professional for Azure) is the entry point to the Azure series from Altered Security, which has offices in India and Singapore. Its exam is fully practical: you get 24 hours in a dedicated lab spanning multiple Azure tenants, compromise the listed resources, then submit a detailed report with proof.
The course, Cloud Red Team Tactics for Attacking and Defending Azure, runs in a live environment with hybrid identity and on premises infrastructure, four independent kill chains and a CTF. Topics include Entra ID, Microsoft Graph, Intune, Defender for Cloud and Azure AD Connect. On-demand lab access was listed on its site in October 2026 at $449 for 30 days, $649 for 60 days and $849 for 90 days, each including one exam attempt. Retakes are $99 and the certification is valid for three years.
Best for: Pentesters adding Azure and Entra ID attack skills at a modest price.
ARTE (AWS Red Team Expert) comes from HackTricks Training, the Madrid-based training arm of the HackTricks project, whose free cloud hacking wiki is a standard reference for AWS, Azure and GCP attack techniques. That makes it one of the best known options if you want an AWS penetration testing certification earned in a lab rather than a test center.
The course covers IAM abuse, encryption mechanisms, network protections and misconfigurations across more than 20 AWS services, using both black box red team and whitebox review methods, plus the detection mechanisms defenders rely on. HackTricks lists 50+ hands-on labs, 20+ hours of video, about 70 hours of estimated study and 60 days of lab access. The certification requires passing a final practical exam. The price was listed on its site in October 2026 at €1,099, with a cheaper ARTA (Apprentice) course at €359 for beginners.
Best for: Testers who spend most of their engagements inside AWS accounts.
CARTE (Certified by Altered Security Red Team Expert for Azure) is the expert tier above CARTP and doubles as a renewal path for CARTP holders. The exam gives you 48 hours in a dedicated multi-tenant lab, followed by a report, which makes it one of the longer practical cloud exams available.
The syllabus reads like a list of current Entra ID attack research: device code phishing, Family of Client IDs abuse, Conditional Access gaps, Temporary Access Pass, cross-tenant access, Privileged Identity Management, B2B collaboration abuse, attacker-in-the-middle phishing with session cookie replay, illicit consent grants, Azure Lighthouse, Azure Arc and SAML SSO abuse. It also crosses into GitHub Actions and EC2. Pricing was listed on its site in October 2026 at $499 for 30 days, $699 for 60 days and $899 for 90 days, with $99 retakes.
Best for: Experienced Azure testers and red teamers who already hold CARTP or equivalent skills.
Google Cloud gets far less offensive training attention than AWS or Azure, which is why GRTE (GCP Red Team Expert) stands out. It is one of the few practical certifications built entirely around attacking GCP, and it includes red teaming inside Google Workspace and pivoting between Workspace and GCP, a path that shows up in real engagements.
The course covers Google Cloud IAM, encryption, network defenses, and chaining misconfigurations across many GCP services, plus the security services defenders use. As with ARTE, HackTricks lists 50+ labs, 20+ hours of video and 60 days of lab access, and the certification is awarded after a final practical exam. GRTE was listed at €1,099 on its site in October 2026, and you do not need the Apprentice course first. Holders of ARTE, AzRTE and GRTE receive a combined Cloud Red Team Expert achievement certificate.
Best for: Consultants whose clients run on Google Cloud or Workspace.
OSCP+ from OffSec is not a cloud certification, and its PEN-200 course does not focus on cloud services. It earns a place here as the common hands-on baseline for pentesters in general, and because cloud attacks almost always end on a virtual machine, a container host or a hybrid Active Directory domain where classic skills apply.
According to OffSec’s exam guide, you get 23 hours and 45 minutes to attack three standalone machines (60 points) and one Active Directory set of three machines (40 points), then another 24 hours to submit a report. You need 70 of 100 points. The “+” version expires after three years, while the original OSCP credential does not, so check which one an employer is asking for.
Best for: Newer testers who need general offensive skills before they specialize in cloud.
CompTIA PenTest+ is a vendor-neutral, intermediate pentesting exam. The current version, PT0-003, includes cloud-based attacks within its “Attacks and exploits” domain, which carries 35% of the exam weight. CompTIA names container escapes, metadata service attacks and IAM misconfiguration as covered cloud topics.
The exam has up to 90 multiple choice and performance-based questions with a 165 minute limit. CompTIA did not show a price on the certification page in October 2026. PenTest+ is widely recognized by government and corporate HR filters, so it is a practical choice when a role needs a checkbox credential, though it will not prove you can run a full cloud engagement.
Best for: Candidates who need a recognized, broad pentest credential with some cloud coverage.
Issued by Amazon Web Services, the Security Specialty exam is defensive, but it is the most useful vendor exam for anyone testing AWS. To write credible findings you need to know how IAM policies, KMS, logging, detection services and network controls are supposed to work, and this exam covers that ground in depth.
AWS lists 65 multiple choice or multiple response questions in 170 minutes, delivered at a Pearson VUE center or online. The price was listed on its site in October 2026 at $300, and the certification is valid for three years. AWS’s prep materials reference the SCS-C03 exam version. Pair it with ARTE and you have both sides of an AWS assessment covered.
Best for: AWS testers who want to speak the client’s language when writing remediation advice.
Microsoft retired the Azure Security Engineer Associate certification and its AZ-500 exam on August 31, 2026. Its successor is the Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate, earned through exam SC-500. If you are reading older guides that still recommend AZ-500, this is the current Microsoft equivalent.
SC-500 is a proctored, 120 minute exam covering identity, access and governance, securing storage, databases and networking, securing compute, and managing security posture. Microsoft prices exams by country. The Associate certification also counts as a prerequisite for the expert-level Cybersecurity Architect (SC-100). For Azure testers, it is a solid complement to CARTP and CARTE.
Best for: Azure testers and consultants who also advise on hardening Microsoft environments.
Google Cloud’s Professional Cloud Security Engineer is the vendor’s main security credential. It tests how you design and manage access, network security, data protection and compliance controls in Google Cloud, which is exactly the knowledge you need to explain why a GCP finding matters.
Google lists 50 to 60 multiple choice and multiple select questions in 2 hours, delivered online or at a Pearson VUE center, for $200 as listed on its site in October 2026. There are no prerequisites, though Google recommends three or more years of industry experience, including at least one year on Google Cloud. It pairs naturally with GRTE.
Best for: Testers working on Google Cloud who want an inexpensive vendor credential.
Start with the platform you test most. Azure and Entra ID work points to CARTP, then CARTE. AWS work points to ARTE, and Google Cloud work points to GRTE. If your engagements are evenly mixed, GCPN covers AWS and Azure in one exam. For deeper AWS study before you sit an exam, our guide to AWS security training courses and bootcamps lists more options.
Practical exams (CARTP, CARTE, ARTE, GRTE, OSCP+) prove you can compromise an environment under time pressure, which is what technical interviewers care about. Multiple choice exams (GCPN, PenTest+, the vendor certifications) are easier to schedule and are often what procurement teams and HR filters look for. Many testers hold one of each.
Costs range from $200 for the Google exam to about $8,780 for SANS SEC588 OnDemand before the GIAC exam. Altered Security’s labs start at $449 with an exam attempt included, and HackTricks expert courses were listed at €1,099. If you are paying yourself, a practical cert plus one vendor exam usually gives more value per dollar than a single premium course.
Check renewal rules before you buy. Altered Security certifications last three years with a free renewal exam, AWS certifications last three years, OSCP+ lapses after three years while OSCP itself does not, and Microsoft role-based certifications need a free online renewal assessment. GIAC certifications also require renewal.
GIAC GCPN is the most direct match by name and covers AWS and Azure, but it is a 75 question exam. For proof of hands-on skill, Altered Security CARTP (Azure) and HackTricks Training ARTE (AWS) are the strongest practical choices, since you pass by compromising live cloud environments. Many testers pair one of these with a vendor security exam.
No. OSCP+ proves general network and Active Directory exploitation skills, which help once you land on a cloud virtual machine or hybrid domain, but it does not test cloud identity, IAM policies or cloud service misconfigurations. Most cloud testers add a cloud-specific certification such as CARTP, ARTE or GCPN on top of it.
Yes. Microsoft retired the Azure Security Engineer Associate certification and the AZ-500 exam on August 31, 2026, and it can no longer be earned or renewed. The replacement is the Microsoft Certified: Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate, earned by passing exam SC-500, a proctored 120 minute exam.
The best cloud penetration testing certifications in 2026 split into two groups: practical exams that prove you can break into AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, and knowledge exams that prove you understand the controls and carry weight with employers. GCPN, CARTP and ARTE lead the list, CARTE and GRTE add depth, OSCP+ and PenTest+ cover general pentest skills, and the AWS, Microsoft and Google exams round out your understanding of the defenses you are testing.
Pick the cloud you test most, choose one practical certification for it, and add a vendor exam when a client or employer asks for one. If Microsoft environments are your focus, our list of Azure and Microsoft 365 security training courses is a good next step.
