“Scientific discoveries only matter if they reach patients. The goal is to turn ideas into real treatments that improve lives.”

Dr Flavia Pichiorri is a Los Angeles–based cancer researcher and scientific writer specialising in translational and clinical research in haematologic malignancies. Her work focuses on bridging laboratory discovery with patient care, particularly in diseases such as multiple myeloma and acute leukaemia.

Born in Rome, Italy, she grew up in a family rooted in engineering and analytical sciences. Her early years combined structured thinking with discipline developed through competitive horseback riding, an experience that shaped her approach to long-term problem-solving.

She studied molecular biology and biochemistry at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, graduating with top honours, before pursuing advanced research in the United States at Thomas Jefferson University and The Ohio State University. Her work on the molecular and epigenetic drivers of multiple myeloma contributed to highly cited scientific publications and helped expand understanding of the disease.

Over time, she built a career in translational oncology, contributing to the development of targeted therapies, including CD38 and CD84-directed approaches, immune-based treatments, and radiation-based strategies. Her work integrates laboratory research with early-phase clinical trials, focusing on improving outcomes for patients.

Today, she continues to write and contribute to the evolving field of cancer research, with a focus on clinically relevant science and long-term impact.
