Flora Dong
Founder and Managing Partner
Ardenwood Advisors
How would you introduce Ardenwood Advisors and describe your role within the firm?
I am the Founder and Managing Partner of Ardenwood Advisors, an SEC-registered investment advisory firm based in Palo Alto, California. I work with individuals, families, entrepreneurs, business owners, and family offices on investment advisory and wealth planning matters. A significant portion of my practice includes clients with financial interests across multiple countries, where planning may involve coordinating with other professional advisors and considering a range of financial, estate, and succession planning issues based on each client’s circumstances.
What is Ardenwood Advisors’ business model?
Ardenwood Advisors provides investment advisory and wealth management services. Depending on a client’s objectives and the scope of the engagement, services may include investment management, financial planning, family office support, philanthropic planning, and coordination with clients’ legal, tax, and other professional advisors. Every engagement is different, and the services provided are based on each client’s individual circumstances and needs.
How would you describe your approach to working with clients?
I believe every client relationship begins with understanding the individual’s or family’s objectives, financial circumstances, and long-term priorities. Those conversations provide the foundation for developing recommendations that are appropriate for the client’s situation. As circumstances change over time, planning discussions may also evolve.
Who do you primarily serve, and how has that focus developed over your career?
Throughout my career, I have worked with individuals, families, entrepreneurs, business owners, and family offices with a variety of planning needs. Over time, I have also worked with an increasing number of clients whose financial lives include interests in multiple countries. Those relationships often involve additional coordination among investment, estate, tax, and other planning professionals, depending on each client’s circumstances.
What services do clients most frequently seek from your firm?
The services clients seek vary based on their individual objectives. Some engage us primarily for investment management, while others seek ongoing financial planning or family office support. Depending on the engagement, services may also include coordination with estate planning attorneys, tax professionals, accountants, and other advisors as part of a broader planning process.
How do you stay informed in an industry that changes so quickly?
Financial markets, regulations, and technology continue to evolve, so continuing education is an important part of my profession. I regularly follow industry developments, participate in professional education, and stay informed about changes that may affect clients. While current events are important, I also believe it is valuable to maintain a long-term perspective when evaluating financial planning and investment decisions.
Do you work with many long-term clients?
Many of my client relationships have continued over a number of years as clients’ financial circumstances and planning needs have evolved. Ongoing advisory relationships provide opportunities to periodically review investment strategies, discuss changes in financial circumstances, and evaluate planning considerations as appropriate.
What kind of ongoing support do you provide after an initial engagement?
The level of ongoing support depends on the services a client has engaged us to provide. For ongoing advisory relationships, discussions may include periodic investment reviews, financial planning considerations, coordination with other professional advisors when appropriate, and updates based on changes in a client’s objectives or financial circumstances.
How do you approach conversations about fees and services?
I believe it is important for clients to understand the scope of the services being provided and the associated fees. Every engagement is different, so services and compensation are discussed based on the client’s individual circumstances and the nature of the advisory relationship.
Where do you see Ardenwood Advisors over the next five to ten years?
Financial planning and investment advisory services continue to evolve alongside changes in technology, global markets, and client needs. I expect those trends will continue, particularly for clients whose financial interests extend across multiple jurisdictions. Ardenwood Advisors will continue adapting to those changes while providing advisory services based on each client’s individual circumstances.
What industry developments are you watching most closely?
I continue to follow developments in financial markets, private investments where appropriate, artificial intelligence, technology, and the evolving needs of clients with increasingly complex financial lives. I am also interested in how demographic changes and international financial considerations may influence long-term planning over time.
What advice would you offer someone building their own advisory business?
A strong technical foundation is important, but I also believe it is important to understand each client’s individual circumstances before making recommendations. Listening carefully, communicating clearly, and continuing to learn throughout your career are all important parts of building a professional advisory practice. Every client has different objectives, and taking the time to understand those differences is an important part of providing advice that is appropriate for their situation.
