Short answer: Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your content easy for answer engines to find, trust and quote, so that when someone asks Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity or Copilot a question, your brand or page is part of the answer. In practice that means researching the questions your buyers actually ask, answering them directly near the top of a crawlable page, keeping facts about your business consistent across the web, earning mentions on sites the engines already trust, and letting the right crawlers in. AEO sits on top of SEO rather than replacing it: most answer engines still pull their sources from a search index.
Answer engine optimization is an old idea with a new audience. For most of the last decade it meant winning the box at the top of Google, the answer a smart speaker reads aloud, or a spot in the People Also Ask panel. Since 2024 it has come to mean something bigger: being one of the few sources an AI system cites when it writes a full answer instead of showing ten blue links. The goal is the same, but the engines, the signals and the ways to measure success have all changed.
This guide is written for marketers and business owners who keep hearing the acronym and want a straight explanation. It covers what AEO means, how each major answer engine chooses sources according to its own documentation, what the work looks like, and how to tell whether it is working. If you want the deeper mechanics of how language models decide who to cite, our LLM SEO guide covers that ground; this piece stays focused on the practical playbook.
AEO is the work of shaping your content, your site and your wider web presence so that systems which answer questions directly will use you as a source. An answer engine is any search experience whose main output is an answer rather than a list of links. When it works, your page is quoted or linked as a citation, your brand is named in the answer, or both.
The difference from classic SEO is the unit of success. In SEO you win a ranking position and hope for a click. In AEO you win inclusion in a synthesized answer, which often draws on several sources and may not produce a click. A page that ranks fifth can still be the one an AI answer quotes, and a page that ranks first can be ignored if it buries the answer under an introduction.
If you want the AEO meaning in one line: be the clearest, most trustworthy answer to a question, in a format a machine can lift.
Two things are worth noting about the acronym. First, AEO has other meanings outside marketing (in trade and customs it stands for Authorized Economic Operator), so if you search for it you will see unrelated results. Second, inside marketing the term overlaps heavily with GEO (generative engine optimization), LLM SEO and AI search optimization. They describe largely the same activity from slightly different angles, which we sort out in the comparison section below.
AEO predates ChatGPT. Google introduced featured snippets in January 2014, putting a short extracted answer above the organic results. The People Also Ask module followed, and by 2018 Google was describing featured snippets as especially helpful for people searching by voice, since a spoken result reads out one answer. SEO practitioners began calling the craft of winning those positions AEO: question-shaped headings, tight definitions, and lists and tables that extract cleanly.
The second wave came with generative search. Google launched AI Overviews in the US in May 2024 and rolled AI Mode out to all US users in May 2025. OpenAI launched ChatGPT search in October 2024 and opened it to all users in February 2025. Perplexity built its product around cited answers from the start, and Microsoft grounds Copilot’s web answers in Bing. The old term fit well enough that it came back into wide use, now covering both snippet surfaces and AI engines.
An answer engine takes a question, retrieves information from an index or the live web, and returns a composed answer, usually with citations. The important word is retrieves. For current, factual or commercial questions, the major engines do not rely only on what the model memorized during training; they run searches and read pages at the moment you ask. That retrieval step is where AEO has the most leverage, because it is the part you can influence with ordinary, crawlable content.
Google’s guidance on AI features is unusually direct: there are no additional requirements and no special optimizations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page has to be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet, and the usual SEO fundamentals apply. Google also explains that these features use a technique it calls query fan-out, issuing several related searches across subtopics to assemble a response, which is why an AI Overview often links to a wider set of pages than the top ten results for the original query.
For site owners, two practical points follow. You control appearance in these features with the same tools you use for regular snippets (nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex), and Google states that you do not need new machine-readable files or special markup to be included.
OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers alongside content supplied directly by partners. On the crawling side, OpenAI’s crawler documentation separates three roles: OAI-SearchBot, which surfaces sites in ChatGPT search results; GPTBot, which collects content that may be used to train models; and ChatGPT-User, which fetches pages when a user’s request calls for it. They are controlled independently, so you can allow search visibility while opting out of training. If you disallow OAI-SearchBot, OpenAI says your pages will not appear in ChatGPT search answers, although a bare link and title may still show up as a navigational result. OpenAI also notes that robots.txt changes take roughly a day to be picked up.
Perplexity searches the web for each question and shows numbered citations beside its answers. Its bot documentation lists two agents: PerplexityBot, which it uses to surface sites in its search results and says is not used to train foundation models, and Perplexity-User, which visits pages when a user asks a question that requires it. Perplexity states that Perplexity-User generally ignores robots.txt because a person initiated the request, so blocking PerplexityBot is the lever that affects whether you are indexed for Perplexity’s answers.
Microsoft’s documentation for Copilot describes web grounding through the Bing search service: Copilot generates a few short search queries from the prompt, sends them to Bing and uses the results to build its response, with citations shown to the user. The practical conclusion is simple. If Bing cannot find, crawl or index your page, Copilot is unlikely to cite it. In February 2026 Bing added an AI Performance report to Bing Webmaster Tools, in public preview, which shows how often your pages are cited as sources across Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing and some partner integrations, along with the grounding queries behind those citations.
| Answer engine | Where sources come from | Crawler that matters | Owner reporting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google’s Search index, with query fan-out across related searches | Googlebot (Search controls, not Google-Extended) | Included in Search Console’s Web totals, not broken out |
| ChatGPT search | Third-party search providers plus partner content | OAI-SearchBot (GPTBot is for training) | Referral visits tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com |
| Perplexity | Live web search with numbered citations | PerplexityBot | Referral visits from perplexity.ai in analytics |
| Microsoft Copilot | Bing search results via web grounding | Bingbot | AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools |
Two of these deserve a caution. First, Google-Extended is not the switch for AI Overviews. Google’s crawler documentation says the Google-Extended token governs whether your content is used to train future Gemini models and to ground answers in Gemini apps, and that it does not affect inclusion in Google Search or act as a ranking signal. Because AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of Search, blocking Google-Extended does not remove you from them; the Search snippet controls do. Second, none of these companies publishes a list of ranking factors for citations. Anyone who claims to know the exact weights is guessing.
Strip away the jargon and AEO is seven habits. Most also improve ordinary SEO, which is a useful sanity check: if a tactic would hurt regular search performance, be suspicious of it.
Answer engines are driven by questions, and the questions people type into ChatGPT tend to be longer and more specific than the keywords they type into Google. Build your list from sources that reflect real phrasing: People Also Ask boxes and related searches in Google, the queries in your own Search Console data, sales call notes, support tickets, on-site search logs, community threads, and the prompts you get when you try your category in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot yourself. Group them by intent (definitions, comparisons, recommendations, cost and process), because each needs a different page shape.
The single most effective structural change is to answer the question in the first two or three sentences under the heading that asks it. Retrieval systems work with passages, not whole pages, and a passage that states the answer, the key qualifier and one supporting fact is easy to quote. After the direct answer, expand with context, steps, examples and exceptions. Use question-shaped headings, lists for steps and tables for comparisons; these survive extraction intact.
Schema markup helps search engines understand what a page is about and who is behind it: Organization, Person, Product, LocalBusiness, Article and Review markup all make entities and facts explicit. That is useful. What schema does not do is guarantee a citation, and some of the markup people associate with AEO no longer produces visible results. Google retired HowTo rich results in 2023 and, in the same year, limited FAQ rich results to well-known government and health sites. In May 2026 it stopped showing FAQ rich results in Search entirely and began removing the related Search Console reporting. FAQPage markup is still valid Schema.org and does no harm, but it is no longer a Google display feature.
Google’s own AI features guidance adds that you do not need special markup to appear in AI Overviews. Treat schema as clean labeling that must match the visible content on the page, not as an AEO trick.
Answer engines need to be confident about who you are before they name you. Use the same company name, description, location, founders and core facts on your site, your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, industry directories, Wikipedia or Wikidata where you legitimately qualify, and partner pages. Inconsistent details (an old address here, a former product name there) give the engine reasons to hedge or pick a competitor whose facts line up.
For recommendation questions such as best CRM for small agencies or top AEO agencies, answer engines lean heavily on sources other than the brands themselves: independent reviews, comparison articles, curated lists, forums and news coverage. If the only page saying you are good is your own, you are unlikely to be named. The work here looks like digital PR and reputation management: getting reviewed, being included in credible roundups, contributing expert commentary, and making sure the third-party pages that already mention you are accurate.
You cannot be cited from a page the engine was not allowed to read. Check your robots.txt, your firewall and any bot-management service (CDN bot protection often blocks AI agents by default) against this short list:
Also make sure your key answers are in the HTML the server sends, not only rendered by JavaScript after load, and that important pages are not behind logins, cookie walls or interstitials that a crawler cannot pass.
Answer engines favor information that looks current for anything time-sensitive: prices, rankings, regulations, software features, statistics. Review your priority pages on a schedule, update facts and examples, show a visible last-updated date when you make a real change, and resubmit updated URLs (Bing supports IndexNow for this). Changing the date without changing the content is not freshness.
The three terms are often used as if they were competing disciplines. They are better understood as overlapping layers of one job: being found and chosen when people look for information. The table below shows where they differ in emphasis.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
| Main goal | Rank pages and earn clicks | Be the direct answer or a cited source | Be included and cited in AI-generated answers |
| Main surfaces | Organic search results | Featured snippets, voice answers, People Also Ask, AI answers | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini |
| Unit of success | Position and click | Answer or citation | Mention, citation and how you are described |
| Core tactics | Technical health, relevance, links | Question research, answer-first structure, entity clarity | Same as AEO plus off-site corroboration and brand description |
| Main metrics | Rankings, clicks, conversions | Snippet wins, citations, AI referrals | AI share of voice, citation rate, sentiment |
| Term dates from | 1990s | Late 2010s, featured snippet era | 2023, named in an academic paper |
The AEO vs SEO question has a short answer: AEO is a specialization of SEO, not a replacement. Google says its AI features draw on the same index and the same fundamentals as Search, Copilot grounds in Bing, and ChatGPT search relies on search providers. A site that cannot rank or be crawled will struggle to be cited. What AEO adds is a different definition of the target (the answer, not the position), a stronger emphasis on passage-level clarity, and a measurement model that counts citations and mentions rather than only clicks.
AEO vs GEO is mostly a naming difference. GEO was coined in a 2023 research paper on generative engine optimization by Pranjal Aggarwal and colleagues, which tested content changes such as adding citations, quotations and statistics and reported visibility gains of up to 40 percent in generative engine responses. AEO is the older term and includes non-generative answer surfaces like featured snippets and voice. In agency marketing today the two describe nearly the same service. For a deeper look at how GEO changes day-to-day SEO work, see our guide GEO vs SEO: What Actually Changes.
Measurement is the weakest part of most AEO programs, because the engines report little and answers vary between runs. Combine four sources and trust trends over single results.
Build a fixed set of prompts that matter to your business, typically 30 to 100 questions covering definitions, comparisons, recommendations and pricing in your category. Run them on a regular schedule across the engines your buyers use and record, for each answer, whether your brand is mentioned, whether your site is cited, which competitors appear and how you are described. Your share of voice is the proportion of answers in which you appear, compared with competitors. Answers vary, so run each prompt more than once per period and track the rate, not a single screenshot.
Doing this by hand gets tedious quickly, which is why a category of AI visibility tools has grown up to automate prompt runs, citation capture and competitor comparison. We compare the options in our list of AI visibility tracking tools. Keep the prompt set stable so monthly numbers are comparable.
Google counts clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode inside the regular Performance report under the Web search type, and it does not offer a filter that separates them. You can see the total effect on a page, but not isolate the AI share. Bing is currently more generous: the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools shows citation counts, cited pages and grounding queries for Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries. If you have not verified your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, that is a quick win.
Clicks from answer engines show up as referral traffic. OpenAI appends utm_source=chatgpt.com to links in ChatGPT answers, and visits from Perplexity usually arrive with perplexity.ai as the referrer; Copilot and Gemini visits can arrive with their own referrers. In GA4 or your analytics tool of choice, create a channel group or segment that collects these sources so you can watch volume, landing pages and conversion rate over time. Expect small numbers relative to organic search for most sites, but compare conversion rates too.
Take a realistic question a home services company wants to own: “How much does it cost to replace a water heater?” Imagine a regional plumbing company whose existing page ranks on page one for water heater replacement but never appears in AI answers for the question.
The before version is typical. The page title is Water Heater Services, the first screen is a hero image and a call-to-action button, the next 300 words describe the company’s history and commitment to quality, and pricing is covered by a single line inviting visitors to call for a free quote. There is no mention of tank sizes, fuel types or what drives cost. An answer engine reading that page finds nothing it can quote in response to the question, so it cites a national cost guide instead.
The after version keeps the service page but restructures the content and adds an answer block:
| Element | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Heading | Water Heater Services | How Much Does It Cost To Replace A Water Heater? |
| First 50 words | Company history and a quote button | A direct answer with the company’s real installed price range for standard tank and tankless units, drawn from its own recent jobs |
| Cost drivers | Not covered | A short table: tank vs tankless, gas vs electric, capacity, permits, venting or electrical upgrades, haul-away |
| Local detail | Service area list in the footer | Permit requirements and typical timeline in the cities it serves |
| Proof | Generic testimonials | Licensed plumber named as author, license number, dated review of the figures |
| Structured data | None | LocalBusiness and Article markup matching the visible content |
| Follow-up questions | None | Short answers to how long installation takes, repair vs replace, and warranty terms |
Nothing on the new page is a trick. It answers the question honestly and specifically, backs the answer with the business’s own data and credentials, and anticipates the next three questions. That is also what a human visitor wanted. The company then checks that its Google Business Profile, Yelp listing and trade association profile show the same name, service area and license details, and asks recent customers to mention the job type in their reviews, which gives answer engines third-party corroboration for recommendation questions such as best water heater installer near me.
Results are not guaranteed or instant, but the page now holds the most specific quotable answer in its market, which is exactly the gap answer engines fill.
llms.txt is a proposal, first published by Jeremy Howard in 2024, for a Markdown file that summarizes a site for AI agents. It is popular on developer documentation sites and some tools read it. But it is not an adopted standard for search, and the answer engines covered here do not say they use it to choose sources. Google’s Gary Illyes said in July 2025 that Google does not support it, and in June 2026 John Mueller described its value for search as purely speculative. Adding one is cheap and harmless; expecting it to earn citations is a mistake.
Some AEO advice produces pages that read like a question-and-answer dump: dozens of thin headings, each with a two-sentence answer and no substance. They are easy to extract and rarely worth citing. The engines are trying to find the answer a knowledgeable person would give. Write that answer, then make it easy to lift.
Because third-party mentions matter, a market has grown up selling them: networks of low-quality sites, fake reviews and paid forum posts. Beyond the ethical and legal risks (fake reviews breach platform rules and, in the US, FTC rules), these tactics tend to fail because the engines do not trust those pages. Legitimate paid placements, clearly labeled on reputable publications, are a different thing; the test is whether the source would be credible to a human reader.
Structured data clarifies facts. It does not make weak content strong, and several rich result types that AEO articles still recommend, including FAQ and HowTo, no longer display in Google. Mark up what is on the page, accurately, and move on.
Some sites block every AI user agent in one sweep and then wonder why they never appear in ChatGPT or Perplexity. The better approach is a deliberate policy: allow the search and retrieval crawlers you want visibility in, and make a separate, informed choice about training crawlers such as GPTBot and Google-Extended.
AEO deserves a real budget when your buyers research before they buy and ask questions along the way. B2B software, professional services, agencies, healthcare, finance, travel, education, and considered consumer purchases all fit that description. It is also worth it when competitors are named in AI answers and you are not, or when your brand is described inaccurately.
AEO is less urgent when demand is almost entirely navigational or local and immediate (someone who needs a locksmith now searches Maps, not ChatGPT), when your site still has basic SEO problems such as indexing errors or thin content, or when your market is small enough that a handful of direct relationships drive most revenue. Fix the fundamentals first; they are prerequisites anyway.
| Situation | AEO priority | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Considered B2B or high-ticket purchase | High | Buyers ask comparison and recommendation questions before contacting vendors |
| Competitors named in AI answers, you are not | High | Share of voice gap directly affects shortlists |
| Inaccurate AI descriptions of your brand | High | Corroboration and entity work can correct the record over time |
| Site has indexing or technical SEO problems | Low until fixed | Answer engines depend on the same crawl and index |
AEO means making your content the clearest and most trustworthy answer to the questions your customers ask, so that Google’s AI features, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and voice assistants use it as a source.
AEO marketing is the application of AEO to a brand’s marketing program. It combines content (answer-first pages built around real questions), technical work (crawl access, structured data), and off-site work (reviews, PR and credible third-party mentions) with measurement of how often the brand appears in AI answers.
No. Answer engines mostly retrieve from search indexes, so strong SEO remains the foundation. AEO changes what you optimize for and how you measure it, but a site that cannot be crawled, indexed or trusted will not be cited either.
AEO is the older term and covers all answer surfaces, including featured snippets and voice. GEO was named in 2023 and focuses on generative AI engines. In practice agencies use them almost interchangeably.
It helps engines understand entities and facts, and it should match the visible page. It does not guarantee citations, Google says no special markup is needed for AI Overviews, and FAQ and HowTo rich results no longer display in Google Search.
Block only what you have decided to block. If you want to appear in ChatGPT search, allow OAI-SearchBot; for Perplexity, allow PerplexityBot. Training crawlers such as GPTBot and the Google-Extended token are separate choices, and blocking Google-Extended does not remove you from Google Search or AI Overviews.
Technical fixes such as unblocking a crawler can matter within days to weeks, since OpenAI says robots.txt changes are read within about a day. Content restructuring typically shows up over weeks as pages are recrawled. Earning third-party corroboration and shifting how engines describe your brand usually takes months.
Not necessarily. A capable in-house SEO or content team can do most of the work described here. Agencies earn their fee on prompt tracking at scale, digital PR and corroboration, and technical audits across complex sites.
AEO is not a new discipline so much as a sharper version of good search practice: know the questions, answer them clearly and specifically, make sure machines can read and trust the page, and make sure the rest of the web agrees with what you say about yourself. The engines now write full answers, but by their own documentation they still find sources through search indexes and crawlers you control. Start with a fixed set of questions, fix crawl access, rebuild your most important pages answer-first, and measure share of voice and AI referrals over months rather than days.
