What marketing services do you need for your project?

How Much Does Waymo Cost In 2026? Prices, Cities And Safety

Short answer: There is no flat Waymo rate. As of October 2026, the Waymo app shows you a price before you book, built from a minimum charge plus trip distance and time, and that price can rise when demand is high. Las Vegas is the one city where Waymo publishes its formula ($9.49 base, $1.23 per mile, $0.45 per minute), while independent data from San Francisco put the average Waymo ride at about $19.69 over the 2025 holiday period.

If you are wondering how much does Waymo cost before you try your first driverless ride, the honest answer is that it depends on the city, the distance, the time of day and how busy the service is when you tap the request button. This guide covers Waymo’s own pricing rules, the few published fares and price studies, how it compares with Uber and Lyft, where you can ride in 2026, its safety record and the fees that surprise new riders. Every price and city claim is dated, because Waymo changes often.

    In This Guide

    How Waymo Pricing Works

Waymo uses dynamic, upfront pricing. According to the Waymo FAQ (checked October 2026), you always see the trip cost before you book. You enter your pickup spot and destination in the app, and the estimated fare appears on the “Your trip” screen before you request a car. Waymo’s trip pricing help page adds that the actual price charged may vary from that estimate, for example if you change the trip.

    What Goes Into The Price

Waymo’s help page says each trip’s price is built from three core parts:

    • A minimum charge that applies to every trip.
    • Distance, based on the most direct route.
    • Duration of the trip.

On top of that, Waymo lists several things that can push the price up or down:

    • The time you request the ride and the level of demand at that moment.
    • Demand and car availability near your pickup and dropoff points.
    • Booking in advance (a scheduled pickup can be priced differently from an on-demand ride).
    • Special or promotional pricing.
    • Tolls, fees and surcharges, such as an airport access fee.
    • Changing your destination mid-trip or adding stops.
    • Late cancellations, no-shows, or leaving the car dirty or damaged.

Two details help you. First, Waymo prices the trip on the most direct route, so if the car reroutes around construction, the FAQ says “the cost to you won’t change for that trip.” Second, a scheduled pickup keeps the price you were shown unless you edit the trip, according to Waymo’s pickup time help page. The trade-off is that Waymo openly says prices “may be higher” during busy periods to help manage requests, which works much like surge pricing on other apps.

    Waymo Premier Membership

In June 2026, Waymo launched Waymo Premier, an invite-only membership that costs $29.99 per month. It started with select riders in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Phoenix. Per the Premier help page (checked October 2026), members get priority pickups, 10% back in Waymo Cash on trip prices (more when it is busy), early access to new cities, and up to five free cancellations per month. The membership renews monthly, and you can cancel any time from the Account tab, keeping benefits until the end of the billing period.

How Much Does Waymo Cost In Each City

Waymo does not publish a rate card for most markets, so be wary of sites listing precise fares for every city. Below is what we could source as of October 2026, with each source labeled.

    Las Vegas (Official Waymo Rate)

Las Vegas is the only city where Waymo’s own help page publishes a formula. As of October 2026, Waymo states that trips in Las Vegas include a base rate of $9.49 plus $1.23 per mile plus $0.45 per minute. As a worked example of that formula, a 5-mile ride that takes 15 minutes would come to about $22.39 before any taxes, fees or demand-based changes ($9.49 + $6.15 + $6.75).

San Francisco Bay Area (Third-Party Data)

The best independent figures come from Obi, a ride-hailing price aggregator. As reported by TechCrunch on January 27, 2026, Obi simulated more than 94,000 ride requests in the San Francisco Bay Area between November 27, 2025 and January 1, 2026 and found an average Waymo price of $19.69 per ride. That was down from an average of $20.43 in Obi’s earlier study of March 25 to April 25, 2025. These are averages from a third-party sample, not Waymo rate cards, and your fare will depend on your route.

    Dallas (Single Reported Fare)

Electric Vehicles reported on April 20, 2026 that an anonymous rider was quoted $13.93 by Waymo for a 2.25-mile trip of about seven minutes. That is one rider’s shared screenshot, not an average.

Austin And Atlanta (Booked Through Uber)

In Austin and Atlanta, you do not use the Waymo app at all. Waymo rides are dispatched through Uber, and Uber’s Waymo on Uber page says you pay the same price as the ride type you requested. If you order an UberX and accept a Waymo match, you pay what that UberX would have cost. Uber’s Austin launch announcement (March 4, 2025) described it as “no additional cost.”

    Other Waymo Cities

For Los Angeles, Phoenix, Miami, Houston, Denver, Nashville, Orlando, San Antonio, San Diego and Tampa, we found no official rate or dated price study as of October 2026. Open the app, enter your trip and read the quote; checking is free.

Waymo Vs Uber Vs Lyft Cost

Is Waymo cheaper than Uber? Based on the only large, dated comparisons we found, generally no, at least in San Francisco, but the gap has been shrinking. Both studies below come from Obi and cover San Francisco only.

Period (San Francisco) Waymo Average Uber Average Lyft Average Source
    March 25 to April 25, 2025 $20.43 $15.58 (UberX) $14.44 (Lyft Standard) Obi report, via TechCrunch, June 12, 2025
    November 27, 2025 to January 1, 2026 $19.69 $17.47 $15.47 Obi data, via TechCrunch, January 27, 2026

In the spring 2025 sample, Obi’s report found that Waymo averaged about 31% more than Uber and 41% more than Lyft on the same routes, and TechCrunch’s coverage noted the premium was biggest on very short rides. By the holiday 2025 sample, Waymo’s average had dipped about 3.6% while Uber’s rose about 12% and Lyft’s about 7%, leaving Waymo roughly $2.22 above Uber on average.

A few practical takeaways for waymo vs uber decisions:

    • Short hops cost the most per mile on Waymo. Obi’s data showed Waymo’s per-kilometer premium was largest on the shortest trips.
    • Compare at the moment you ride. All three services use demand-based pricing, so the cheapest option can change by the hour.
    • In Austin and Atlanta the price is the same. A Waymo booked through Uber costs what the requested Uber ride type costs.
    • Factor in tips. Uber and Lyft fares are often followed by a driver tip, while Waymo’s help pages describe no tipping option (there is no driver), which narrows the real-world gap.

If you ride Uber often in Austin or Atlanta, an Uber One membership may also affect what you pay. See our guide on how to cancel Uber One if you decide the membership is not worth keeping.

Where Waymo Operates In 2026 (Waymo Cities)

As of October 2026, Waymo’s rides page lists 15 metro areas where it is serving riders:

    City How You Book
    Phoenix, AZ Waymo app
San Francisco Bay Area, CA Waymo app
    Los Angeles, CA Waymo app
    San Diego, CA Waymo app
    Las Vegas, NV Waymo app
    Denver, CO Waymo app
    Dallas, TX Waymo app
    Houston, TX Waymo app
    San Antonio, TX Waymo app
    Miami, FL Waymo app
    Orlando, FL Waymo app
    Tampa, FL Waymo app
    Nashville, TN Waymo app
    Austin, TX Uber app only
    Atlanta, GA Uber app only

One caveat: Waymo’s FAQ, checked the same month, says riders can ride right away in Dallas, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Metro Phoenix, Miami, Nashville, Orlando and San Francisco, while San Antonio, San Diego, Tampa and Las Vegas are still opening access, with an invitation to download the app to be among the first to ride. If you are in one of those newer cities, you may need to wait for access.

In Austin and Atlanta, Waymo’s help page for Waymo rides on Uber explains the process: turn on the Waymo preference in the Uber app (Account, Settings, Ride Preferences, Autonomous Vehicles), request an UberX, Uber Green, Uber Comfort or Uber Comfort Electric inside the Waymo service area, then tap Accept ride when a Waymo match pops up. If you decline, you get a regular driver.

Waymo also lists “Up Next” cities on the same page as of October 2026, including Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Portland, Sacramento, Seattle, St. Louis and Washington, DC, plus London and Tokyo.

Airport service is limited. Waymo’s airport help page lists Phoenix Sky Harbor, San Antonio, San Francisco and San José Mineta international airports. Freeway trips are also limited: Waymo’s help center says freeway access is “currently limited,” and TechCrunch reported that Waymo pulled its robotaxis from highways on May 19, 2026 during a recall (see the safety section).

    Is Waymo Safe?

Is Waymo safe? There are two sides: Waymo’s published crash data, which compares favorably with human drivers, and a record of federal investigations and software recalls.

    Waymo’s Published Safety Data

Waymo’s Safety Impact hub, with data through June 2026, reports 271.3 million rider-only miles driven. Compared with a human-driver benchmark on the same kinds of surface streets in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin and Atlanta, Waymo reports:

    • 95% fewer crashes with serious injuries or worse.
    • 82% fewer crashes with any injury.
    • 82% fewer crashes that deployed an airbag in any vehicle.
    • 93% fewer crashes injuring pedestrians.

Waymo says its methodology builds on peer-reviewed research published in the journal Traffic Injury Prevention, and that the hub updates on the reporting timelines of NHTSA’s Standing General Order on crash reporting. These are Waymo’s own figures and comparisons, not an independent government rating.

    Federal Investigations And Recalls

    • School buses (2025 to 2026): NHTSA opened an investigation in October 2025 after reports of Waymo vehicles failing to stay stopped for school buses. NPR reported in December 2025 that the Austin Independent School District had documented 19 illegal passings and that Waymo would file a voluntary software recall.
    • Child struck in Santa Monica (January 2026): On January 23, 2026, a Waymo struck a child near an elementary school, causing minor injuries. Al Jazeera reported that NHTSA opened a preliminary evaluation and the NTSB said it would investigate, alongside a separate NTSB probe into the Austin school bus passings. Waymo said the child entered the road from behind a tall SUV and that the car slowed from about 17 mph to under 6 mph before contact.
    • Flooded roads recall (May 2026): TechCrunch reported on May 12, 2026 that Waymo recalled 3,791 vehicles after robotaxis slowed but did not stop at impassable flooded roads, including an empty vehicle swept away in San Antonio. The interim fix restricts operation in flash-flood risk areas.
    • Highway construction zones recall (June 2026): TechCrunch reported on June 18, 2026 that Waymo recalled nearly 4,000 vehicles after at least 13 cases of robotaxis entering closed highway construction zones in Phoenix and San Francisco. Waymo pulled its robotaxis from highways on May 19, 2026, and the report described this as Waymo’s sixth recall.

The three recalls above were voluntary software recalls filed with NHTSA. Check NHTSA’s database for current status.

How To Book And Pay In The Waymo App

The Waymo app is available on the App Store and Google Play. Waymo’s getting started page describes a short setup process, after which you can ride if you are in an eligible area.

    1. Download the Waymo app and complete setup, including adding a payment method.
    2. Enter your pickup spot and destination, then check the estimated fare on the “Your trip” screen.
    3. Request the car now, or choose a pickup time from 5 minutes up to 1 hour ahead.
    4. Find the car by the initials on its roof dome, or use the app to honk the horn.
    5. Unlock the doors from the app (some cars unlock automatically), get in and buckle up.

    Payment Options

Waymo’s payment help page (checked October 2026) lists Apple Pay, Google Pay, major credit cards (including Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover) and debit cards. You need a valid payment method before your first ride, even if you plan to use Waymo Cash. You may see two pending charges: a hold for the initial estimate, which is reversed after the trip, and the final charge, which can differ if the itinerary changed. Waymo gift cards can be bought for any email address, are redeemed in the app and never expire.

    Accounts, Riders And Tipping

    • Age: Waymo’s Rider Rules say you must be 18 or older to ride alone, except for linked teen accounts in select areas such as metro Phoenix.
    • Passengers: Up to four riders in total. Children under 8 need a car or booster seat in the back seat.
    • Tipping: Waymo’s help pages do not describe any tipping option as of October 2026, and there is no driver to tip.

Cancellation Fees, Lost Items And Refunds

    Cancellation And No-Show Fees

Waymo’s trip pricing page says fees “may be applied to trips canceled late or if you don’t show up to the car on time.” Its scheduling page adds that a standard cancellation fee may apply if you cancel once the car is already on its way. Waymo does not publish the amount, so check the app before you cancel. Cars usually wait about five minutes at pickup, with shorter waits in congested areas or bike lanes, per Waymo’s “10 things to know” page. Premier members get up to five free cancellations per month.

    Cleaning And Damage Fees

The Rider Rules (checked October 2026) list a $50 fee for a mess you report yourself during the ride, $100 for an unreported mess on a first violation, and $100 for smoking or vaping on a first violation. Repeat violations can cost up to the actual cleaning cost and affect your account standing. Damage fees are set at Waymo’s discretion based on repair costs.

    Lost Items

According to Waymo’s lost and found page, you can report a lost item from the Help tab in the app (chat, email or call), by calling Support at 1 (844) 261-3753, or through the Report lost item form. Items are stored for only 7 days, and Waymo does not keep bottles, smoking items, umbrellas or food. Once Support confirms your item is ready, you pick it up at the Waymo depot, which is open 24/7. Waymo does not reimburse the value of lost items and cannot guarantee they will be found.

    Refunds

If you have a problem with a ride, Waymo’s payment page says you can request a refund through its support form, with eligibility depending on the issue. Refunds go back to your original payment method, which may be split between Waymo Cash and a card. Waymo Cash cannot be converted to cash outside the app.
