Short answer: You rank in Perplexity and Google AI Mode by being one of the sources each system retrieves and quotes. For Perplexity, that means letting PerplexityBot crawl your site, publishing fresh pages that answer questions in the first few sentences, and earning mentions on the community and review sites Perplexity leans on, especially Reddit. For Google AI Mode, Google says there is no special optimization: your page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, and then it competes to answer one of the many related searches AI Mode runs behind each question. Strong SEO is the foundation for both, but neither simply copies the classic top ten.
Perplexity and AI Mode share an important trait: both show their sources. That makes them two of the most measurable AI search surfaces, and two of the most valuable, because a citation is a visible recommendation with a link. This guide explains how each one picks sources and what to do about it.
Perplexity is an answer engine built on live web retrieval. When someone asks a question, it searches its index, reranks the pages it finds, and writes an answer with numbered citations. A few things stand out about how it behaves.
According to Perplexity’s crawler documentation, PerplexityBot builds the index used to surface and link sites in Perplexity results, and the company recommends allowing it in robots.txt if you want to appear. A second agent, Perplexity-User, fetches pages on demand when a user’s question needs them. Because those requests are user-initiated, Perplexity says this agent generally does not follow robots.txt. Perplexity also states that neither agent is used to train AI models.
Reddit is the single most visible pattern in Perplexity’s citations. An Evertune analysis of more than 200 million prompts found that Perplexity cited Reddit in 20% or more of its responses at times in early 2026, far more than other assistants did. YouTube, LinkedIn, Wikipedia, review platforms and trade publications also recur. For commercial questions, a large share of what Perplexity cites comes from third-party pages rather than brand sites.
Studies of Perplexity citations consistently find a strong preference for recently updated pages and for content that states the answer early and plainly. Pages built as clear lists, comparisons, tables and short factual sections are easier for it to quote.
AI Mode is Google’s conversational search experience, built for questions that need reasoning, comparison or follow-up. It draws on the same index as regular Google Search, but it assembles answers differently.
Google’s AI features documentation explains that AI Mode and AI Overviews may use a query fan-out technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build a response. A question like “best CRM for a small accounting firm” might fan out into searches about CRM pricing, accounting integrations, ease of use, data security and alternatives. Each of those sub-searches is a separate chance for a page to be pulled in.
This is why AI Mode citations do not simply mirror the top ten blue links. One Semrush analysis of AI Mode sources found only partial overlap with Google’s top organic results for the same query, meaning many cited domains did not rank on page one for the original question. They ranked for one of the sub-questions instead.
Google is clear that there is no separate playbook. It says there are no additional technical requirements for AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and that you do not need new machine readable files, AI text files or special structured data. The usual fundamentals still apply: crawlable pages, internal links, a good page experience, important content in text, and structured data that matches what is visible on the page.
AI Mode traffic is counted inside Search Console’s Performance report. Since June 2026, Google also offers dedicated generative AI performance reports that show impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date.

Check robots.txt for rules affecting Googlebot and PerplexityBot, and make sure your CDN or firewall is not blocking them at the edge. Allow Perplexity’s published IP ranges if you use IP-based bot protection. Remember that blocking training crawlers such as GPTBot or Google-Extended is a separate decision from blocking search crawlers.
For AI Mode, a page that is not indexed or carries a nosnippet directive cannot be cited. Use Search Console’s URL Inspection tool on your most important pages and fix any indexing or snippet issues first.
List the questions your buyers ask, then list the sub-questions each one implies: pricing, comparisons, alternatives, how long it takes, who it is best for, common problems and edge cases. “People also ask” boxes, related searches and your sales team’s notes are good sources. Make sure you have a strong page or section for each sub-question. Our guide to ranking in AI Overviews shows how to build this map.
Open every important page and section with a direct two or three sentence answer, then expand. Use headings that match how people ask, such as “How much does X cost?” rather than “Our pricing philosophy.” State facts in text, and use tables for prices, specs and comparisons. Content that can be lifted cleanly into an answer is more likely to be cited by both systems. Our explainer on answer engine optimization versus SEO covers the format in more detail.
Perplexity in particular favors recently updated content. Review your highest-value pages on a schedule, update figures and examples, and show a visible last-updated date. Refreshing a strong existing page usually beats publishing a new, thinner one.
Run your priority prompts in Perplexity and AI Mode and note every third-party domain that gets cited. Those are your targets. Common ones include industry roundups and “best of” lists, review platforms, Reddit threads, YouTube videos, trade media and directories. Practical tactics include digital PR, expert commentary, getting included on reputable comparison lists, encouraging customer reviews and taking part genuinely in relevant communities. Our lists of AI brand mention and citation services and agencies for LLM citation building cover firms that specialize in this.
Describe your company the same way everywhere: your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and review sites. Use Organization structured data that matches your visible content. Consistent facts make it easier for both systems to understand who you are and to describe you accurately.
Track a fixed prompt set across both platforms every month. Record whether you are mentioned, whether you are cited, your position, and which sources appear. Pair that with the Search Console generative AI report for Google. The fundamentals overlap, but the systems differ. Perplexity cites sources on almost every answer and leans heavily on community sites and fresh content. ChatGPT search relies on its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and its citation patterns differ. Our guide to how to rank in ChatGPT covers it separately.
Not for the exact question. Because AI Mode runs many related searches, a page that ranks well for a sub-question can be cited even if it is not in the top ten for the original query. Strong organic rankings across a topic still help a great deal.
Google says no special structured data is required for its AI features. Structured data that accurately matches your visible content is still good practice and helps search systems understand your pages.
Technical fixes such as unblocking crawlers can show results within days or weeks once pages are recrawled. Content and third-party authority work usually takes several months.

Perplexity and Google AI Mode reward the same core work: pages that crawlers can reach, answers that are easy to quote, coverage of the questions buyers actually ask, and a presence on the trusted third-party sites each system draws from. Perplexity adds a stronger pull toward freshness and community sources, while AI Mode rewards depth across a topic through query fan-out. Get the access right first, then build answers and authority, and measure progress across many prompts rather than chasing a single ranking.
