A chief revenue officer owns the number. The CRO is responsible for how sales, marketing, customer success and revenue operations work together to produce predictable growth. For many B2B companies, though, a full-time CRO is hard to justify. Search takes months, total compensation can run well into six figures, and the wrong hire can set a team back a year.
A fractional CRO solves part of that problem. Instead of hiring a full-time executive, a company brings in an experienced revenue leader for a set number of days or hours per month, usually to build the sales process, fix forecasting, hire and coach managers, and align go-to-market teams. Some firms also provide interim CROs, who work full time for a few months while a permanent hire is found. The model works much like the fractional CMO, which we explain in our guide on what a fractional CMO is.
This list is for founders, CEOs, private equity operating partners and boards who are considering fractional CRO support in 2027. It covers established fractional executive firms, specialist revenue leadership firms and talent platforms that place fractional CROs, so you can compare models side by side.
To choose the ten firms below, we checked each company’s own website and public records to confirm that it actually offers fractional or interim CRO or senior revenue leadership, and we looked for clear engagement models, published pricing where available, the size of the executive network and named results. No firm paid to appear, and no firm is pinned.

TechCXO is one of the longest-running fractional executive firms in the US. It began in Atlanta in 2003 as TechCFO, offering fractional and interim finance executives, added CMO and CSO services in 2009 and 2010, and later rebranded as TechCXO. Today it reports more than 125 C-level partners and more than 150 operational and strategic professionals.
Its fractional CRO offer provides embedded leadership over the entire revenue engine, covering marketing, sales, customer success and RevOps. The scope includes lead generation, new logo sales, expansion and renewals, plus five focus areas: metrics and dashboards, revenue tech stack evaluation, messaging alignment, hiring and onboarding, and ongoing revenue improvement. The revenue practice lists 14 partners by name.
TechCXO’s breadth is useful when a company needs more than one fractional executive. A portfolio company might bring in a fractional CRO and CFO from the same firm so revenue plans and financial plans line up. Its published case study for Alliance Bus Group describes a redesigned commercial model and revenue operations, with combined revenue growth that exceeded 40 percent.
Best for: Venture-backed and private equity-backed technology companies that want a seasoned fractional CRO from a large bench, with the option to add other fractional executives.
Chief Outsiders is a Houston-based firm founded in 2009 that describes itself as an executives-as-a-service company. It is best known for fractional CMOs, and it also provides fractional and interim CROs and CSOs. Its network includes more than 130 sales and marketing leaders.
The fractional CRO service covers revenue growth, sales development, sales outsourcing, growth strategy and business development, and the executive can work in person, virtually or in a hybrid arrangement. Engagements are usually a monthly retainer or a flat fee, and an administrative team supports the executive with accounting, operations and technology. Chief Outsiders offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on engagement fees, which lowers the risk of trying the model.
The firm focuses on mid-sized businesses and lists nine industries, including private equity and portfolio companies, manufacturing, healthcare, financial services, and SaaS and technology. That mix makes it a good fit for companies outside venture-backed software, where many fractional CRO providers concentrate. If marketing leadership is the bigger gap, see our list of fractional CMO companies.
Best for: Mid-sized companies, including PE portfolio companies and non-tech businesses, that want a vetted fractional CRO with a money-back guarantee.
Chameleon Collective is a consulting network of senior operators who work with companies on a fractional or project basis. Its fractional CRO is a senior operator who owns pipeline, forecast accuracy and go-to-market alignment on a part-time basis, typically one to three days a week. It also offers interim CROs for companies that need full-time cover.
The scope covers go-to-market strategy, pipeline and forecast discipline, sales leadership, revenue operations, marketing and sales alignment, retention and expansion, and board reporting. Every engagement starts with a revenue review and a fixed scope, and Chameleon says success is measured on pipeline coverage, forecast accuracy and net revenue retention. Engagements can also lead to a full-time hire.
A benefit of the collective model is access to adjacent specialists. If the CRO finds that part of the problem sits outside sales, the company can add another consultant from the same network. Chameleon’s SwipeClock case study describes a three-phase transformation that reached seven-figure direct SaaS revenue in eight months.
Best for: Growth-stage companies that want a part-time CRO with a fixed scope and access to other specialists from the same network.
Sales Xceleration, founded in 2013 and based in Fishers, Indiana, calls itself the go-to name in fractional sales leadership. It places fractional VPs of sales and sales leaders rather than CRO titles, but the role is the same for many smaller companies: an experienced leader who owns revenue strategy, process and team performance. The firm reports more than 225 advisors across three continents.
Its advisors use a standard method, the Certified Sales Operating Management System, built around strategy, process and execution. Services cover sales strategy, sales infrastructure, sales management, sales team building, training, AI integration and recruiting. That consistent method matters in a network this large, because it means two advisors in different markets approach the work the same way.
Sales Xceleration says it has supported more than 8,000 businesses, with average first-year sales increases of 20% to 32%. It continues to add advisors, most recently announcing a new class of fractional sales leaders in June 2026. Companies that also need to build rep skills may want to pair it with one of the firms in our list of sales training companies.
Best for: Small and mid-sized businesses that need a part-time sales leader with a proven playbook rather than a C-suite title.
Mahdlo Executive Advisors offers fractional CROs who lead sales, marketing alignment and customer success around one shared revenue number. It lists offices in 12 metros, including Washington, DC, Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco and Toronto, with partners in the UK and EU. Its advisors include former revenue leaders from IBM, Avaya, Disney and CBS.
Mahdlo is unusually clear about engagement models. A full fractional CRO works 40 to 70 hours a month, usually for six to twelve months. An interim head of sales covers a leadership gap at 60 to 100 hours a month. Project-based work, such as market entry or fundraising prep, runs 20 to 40 hours a month, and a sales team optimization option assesses an underperforming team. Most engagements begin with a 100-Day Accelerator.
Named clients include Travelers, Infor, Sherwin-Williams, Staples and Genstar Capital. Mahdlo’s case studies report results such as 27% year-over-year revenue growth for a telecommunications client and 30% lower cost per acquisition for a financial services client.
Best for: Companies that want a clearly scoped fractional CRO engagement with defined hours and a structured first 100 days.
Tecla is a Dallas-based talent firm that has been placing senior leaders in US companies for more than ten years. Its fractional CRO service provides a part-time revenue leader who owns sales, marketing and customer success as one function, covering revenue strategy, forecasting, go-to-market and pricing, and team and RevOps design.
Tecla offers three formats. A fractional CRO works 10 to 25 hours a week and is billed monthly. An interim CRO works full time for three to six months. A revenue advisory option provides board-level guidance. Tecla says it shortlists candidates in three to five business days, includes a dedicated account manager and success manager, and replaces a CRO at no extra cost within 90 days if the match does not work.
The firm targets growth-stage SaaS, B2B and PE-backed companies, and its network includes leaders from product-led SaaS, enterprise sales-led, marketplace and PE portfolio backgrounds. Tecla does not charge upfront or search fees, and compensation is a monthly retainer with no equity required.
Best for: Growth-stage SaaS and PE-backed companies that want a quick shortlist of vetted CRO candidates and a replacement guarantee.
KORE1 is an Irvine, California-based staffing and executive search firm that has run senior search since 2005. Its fractional CRO service draws on the same search desks that place CFOs, CTOs and COOs, so the firm can offer both a fractional leader and, later, a permanent CRO search.
A typical engagement follows a 90-day plan: trace where revenue leaks, fix the largest gap, build repeatable processes, then report on pipeline coverage and forecast accuracy. At the end, the client can stay fractional, add days or hire a full-time CRO. The fractional CRO owns the full path from first contact to renewal, runs sales, aligns sales and marketing under one pipeline and owns the forecast.
KORE1 is one of the few firms that publishes pricing. It quotes about $12,000 to $25,000 per month for a fractional CRO, depending on days per week and the size of the revenue organization, with typical engagements running six to eighteen months. It also reports that 92% of the leaders it places are still in their seat at twelve months.
Best for: Companies that want transparent fractional CRO pricing and a clear path to a permanent hire through the same firm.
Treeline is a sales recruiting firm founded in 2001 and based in Wakefield, Massachusetts. In May 2025 it announced an expansion of its fractional chief revenue officer service, which provides experienced sales executives as part-time CROs on a flexible basis.
The service covers revenue growth strategy, process improvement and executive leadership. Engagements range from short-term CRO consulting projects to ongoing advisory and interim leadership. Treeline focuses on companies with 5 to 1,000 employees, especially those facing aggressive growth targets or preparing for a funding round or acquisition.
Treeline’s background in sales recruiting is the key advantage. A fractional CRO often needs to hire or replace sales managers and reps, and a firm that already recruits sales talent can support that work directly. It is a practical choice for companies where building the sales team is as urgent as setting strategy. For companies that also need pipeline capacity, our list of outsourced SDR companies covers related options.
Best for: Companies preparing for funding or acquisition that need a part-time CRO and help hiring the sales team underneath them.
Go Fractional is an online marketplace that connects companies with fractional and interim executives, including CROs. Unlike the consulting firms above, it does not employ the leaders. It gives companies access to a network it says includes more than 20,000 operators, and a recruiter pre-screens candidates before the company meets them.
The process starts with a short quiz and a 30-minute intro call. An AI search finds operators by the clients and projects they have worked on, and Go Fractional says matches typically arrive in about three days. It supports three models: fractional at one to three days a week, interim at full time for three to twelve months, and contract-to-hire with a 30 to 90 day trial before conversion.
There is no deposit to start, engagements are month to month and replacement matches are free. Go Fractional’s own guidance puts a typical fractional CRO at about $10,000 to $20,000 per month. Its testimonials and case studies come from companies such as Lob, Just Salad and FCP Euro.
Best for: Founders and CEOs who want to interview several fractional CRO candidates quickly and hire directly on flexible terms.
AspireSix is a Minnesota-based firm that launched executive-level fractional leadership services for technology product and services companies in July 2024. It offers fractional CMOs, CROs and CSOs, and CIOs and CISOs, with a focus on the growth challenges facing tech CEOs and business owners. Joshua Davis is the company’s CEO.
The fractional CRO oversees all revenue-generating activities, including sales, marketing and customer success, and the firm typically supports direct and channel sales, solution engineering, demand generation, revenue operations and sales enablement. AspireSix addresses issues such as market entry and expansion, executive alignment, customer acquisition and retention, AI adoption and revenue forecasting.
Engagements start with a complimentary strategy session, move into a four-phase co-created assessment and roadmap, and continue with implementation and ongoing support. Its experience with channel sales and solution engineering is helpful for technology firms that sell through partners. AspireSix is a newer and smaller firm than the others on this list, so ask for references from similar companies.
Best for: Technology product and services companies, especially those with channel sales, that want fractional revenue leadership with a structured assessment.
A fractional CRO works part time over several months to build systems and coach the team. An interim CRO works full time for a fixed period, usually to cover a gap after a departure. Firms such as Tecla, Mahdlo and Go Fractional offer both, so be clear about which problem you are solving before you start conversations.
Some companies need help defining their ideal customer, pricing and sales motion. Others have a strategy but lack a sales process, managers or pipeline discipline. Others have the right people but broken CRM data and reporting. A fractional CRO can address the first two, but systems problems often need a RevOps partner as well, such as the firms on our list of RevOps consulting firms. Our guide on what RevOps is explains where the two roles overlap.
The best fractional CRO has run revenue at a company like yours, with a similar deal size, sales cycle and buyer. Ask each firm to share profiles of two or three candidates and to explain why each fits your situation. Industry depth matters more than a famous former employer.
Look for a firm that defines hours or days per month, the length of the engagement and the deliverables. KORE1 publishes fractional CRO pricing, and Mahdlo publishes hours for each model, which makes comparison easier. Ask how the engagement ends, whether by handoff to a full-time hire or by building an internal team.
Agree on a short list of measures at the start, such as pipeline coverage, win rate, sales cycle length, forecast accuracy and net revenue retention. Review them monthly. A good fractional CRO will want to be held to numbers, not just activity.
A fractional CRO is a part-time revenue executive who sets revenue strategy, builds the sales process, aligns sales, marketing and customer success, improves forecasting, hires and coaches leaders, and reports to the CEO and board. The role is the same as a full-time CRO, delivered for a limited number of days or hours each month.
Published figures vary. KORE1 quotes about $12,000 to $25,000 per month, and Go Fractional puts a typical fractional CRO at about $10,000 to $20,000 per month. The final cost depends on days per week, scope and the size of the revenue team.
Most engagements run six to twelve months, and some extend to eighteen months. Shorter project-based work, such as preparing for a fundraise or entering a new market, can run a few months. Many companies use the engagement to build the function and then hire a full-time CRO.
Common triggers include missing revenue targets, a founder who is still running sales personally, preparation for a funding round or sale, entering a new market, or a gap after a sales leader leaves. If the company is not yet ready to commit to a full-time CRO salary but needs executive-level revenue leadership, the fractional model fits.
A fractional CRO can give a growing company executive-level revenue leadership without the cost and risk of a full-time hire. TechCXO and Chief Outsiders offer large, established networks. Chameleon Collective, Mahdlo and AspireSix provide structured, scoped engagements. Sales Xceleration suits smaller businesses that need a hands-on sales leader, and Tecla, KORE1, Treeline and Go Fractional give companies faster access to candidates, published pricing or recruiting support.
Before you sign, ask each fractional CRO firm for candidate profiles, a clear scope with hours and deliverables, and the metrics they expect to move in the first 90 days. The answers will show quickly which firm understands your revenue problem.
