How To Cancel PlayStation Plus And Stop The Charges In 2026

Sign in to PlayStation Account Management, click Subscription in the left menu, then Cancel Subscription next to PlayStation Plus. On a PS5 it is Settings, Users and Accounts, Account, Payment and Subscriptions, Subscriptions, PlayStation Plus, Cancel Subscription.

Either route turns off auto-renewal rather than cutting you off. Your benefits run to the end of the period you have already paid for, and if you change your mind before the next payment date you can select Reactivate Subscription and carry on as if nothing happened.

The part that catches people is what happens on the day it actually expires. Every game you claimed as a monthly title, and everything you have been playing from the Extra or Premium catalogue, stops working. Those were licences attached to the subscription, not purchases. What you keep is narrower than most people assume.

    What This Guide Covers

    How To Cancel PlayStation Plus

On the web, which is the more reliable route:

    1. Sign in to PlayStation Account Management with the account that holds the subscription.
    2. Choose Subscription from the left-hand menu.
    3. Find PlayStation Plus and click Cancel Subscription.
    4. Confirm, then check that the entry now shows an expiry date rather than a renewal date.

On a PS5: Settings, then Users and Accounts, then Account, then Payment and Subscriptions, then Subscriptions. Select PlayStation Plus and choose Cancel Subscription.

Cancel the day you decide. Your access runs to the end date either way, so there is nothing to gain by waiting and a real chance of forgetting. If you change your mind, Reactivate Subscription before the next payment date puts auto-renewal back on, which is a genuinely useful escape hatch if you cancelled by mistake.

What You Keep And What You Lose

    What

    After it expires

    Monthly games you claimed

Unavailable. They were licensed to an active membership, not bought

    Extra and Premium catalogue games

    Unavailable

    Online multiplayer

    Gone on most paid titles

    Cloud storage for saves

No longer accessible. Local console saves are separate and unaffected

Games you bought at a PS Plus discount

Yours permanently. The discount does not expire with the membership

Redeemed PS Plus packs and avatars

    Yours permanently

    Games you bought outright

    Unaffected

The monthly games point is the one that surprises people, and it is worth being blunt about. Claiming a game to your library every month does not accumulate a library you own. It accumulates a list of games you may play while you keep paying. Stop paying and the list stops working.

Two practical consequences before you cancel. If there is a claimed game you actually want to keep, buy it, ideally at the member discount while you still have it, because that purchase survives. And if a save matters, make sure it exists on the console locally rather than only in cloud storage.

The Tiers And What They Cost In 2026

    Tier

    1 month

    3 months

    12 months

    Essential

    $10.99

    $27.99

    $79.99

    Extra

    $16.99

    $43.99

    $134.99

    Premium

    $19.99

    $54.99

    $159.99

Annual billing is the big saving, around 39 per cent against monthly on Essential and a third on Premium. It also commits you for a year, which is the wrong trade if you are reading a cancellation guide.

Sony raised prices during 2026, so if the number on your statement looks higher than you remember, that is why rather than an error.

    Downgrading Instead Of Cancelling

If cost is the problem rather than the service, dropping a tier is worth considering, but understand what goes with it. Moving from Premium or Extra down to Essential keeps online multiplayer, cloud storage and the monthly games, and gives up the game catalogue. That means the catalogue titles you are part way through stop working, exactly as they would on a full cancellation.

So a downgrade is the right move if you play online with friends and rarely touch the catalogue. It is the wrong move if the catalogue is the only reason you subscribe, in which case cancelling outright is cleaner.

PlayStation Plus Refunds: The 14-Day Rule

Sony’s subscription refund policy has three conditions, and two of them catch people out.

    • First payment only. Recurring renewal charges are not refundable. The annual renewal that surprised you is, by policy, not coming back.
    • Within 14 days of signing up.
    • A free trial counts toward those 14 days. It does not restart the clock, so a seven-day trial leaves you seven days of paid membership in which to change your mind.

Sony also reduces the refund in proportion to how much you have used, so a refund inside the window is not automatically the full amount. That is a real difference from some competitors, and it means acting quickly is worth actual money rather than just tidiness.

To request one, use PlayStation Support, either the online assistant or the support chat. Refunds are returned to the original payment method where possible and to the PSN wallet otherwise, and Sony quotes 30 to 60 days for the money to arrive.

    Stacked Time And Prepaid Cards

PlayStation Plus time stacks. If you have redeemed prepaid cards or bought several months in advance, cancelling the subscription turns off auto-renewal but does not shorten the time already on the account. The expiry date you see is the real one.

Prepaid time also cannot be refunded once redeemed, so a stack of a year and a half is a year and a half whether you use it or not. That is worth checking before you buy discounted cards in bulk on the assumption you can back out later.

When The Cancellation Does Not Stick

    Symptom

    Likely cause

    What to do

    Charged after cancelling

The charge was already in flight, or you cancelled on a different account

Check Account Management shows an expiry date, and confirm which account the receipt names

    Still shows a renewal date

    The cancellation did not save

Repeat it on the web rather than the console, then confirm the date changed

    Cancelled but still have access

Working as intended until the paid period ends

Nothing. Check the expiry date shown

Expiry date is further out than expected

Stacked prepaid time or multi-month purchases

Normal. Cancelling stops renewal but does not remove time already on the account

    Monthly games stopped working

    The membership expired

Expected. Claimed games are licensed to an active membership. Buying them restores access permanently

    Refund refused

It was a renewal rather than the first payment, or outside 14 days including the trial

Check the dates. Renewals are not refundable under the policy

    Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Cancel PlayStation Plus?

Sign in to PlayStation Account Management, select Subscription from the left menu, and click Cancel Subscription next to PlayStation Plus. On a PS5 go to Settings, Users and Accounts, Account, Payment and Subscriptions, Subscriptions, then PlayStation Plus.

Do I Lose My Monthly Games If I Cancel PS Plus?

Yes. Monthly games and the Extra or Premium catalogue are licensed to an active membership rather than owned, so they stop working when it expires. Games you bought outright, including at a PS Plus discount, are yours permanently.

Can I Get A Refund On PlayStation Plus?

Only on your first payment, only within 14 days of signing up, and any free trial counts toward those 14 days. Sony may also reduce the refund in proportion to how much you have used. Renewal charges are not refundable.

How Much Is PlayStation Plus In 2026?

Essential is $10.99 a month or $79.99 a year, Extra is $16.99 a month or $134.99 a year, and Premium is $19.99 a month or $159.99 a year. Annual billing saves roughly a third against monthly.

Can I Undo A PS Plus Cancellation?

Yes, if you act before the next payment date. Select Reactivate Subscription in the same place you cancelled and auto-renewal resumes as though nothing happened.

What Happens To My Cloud Saves?

Cloud storage is a membership benefit, so uploaded saves are no longer accessible once it expires. Local saves on the console itself are separate and are not affected, so copy anything important to the console before the end date.

Should I Downgrade Instead Of Cancelling?

Only if you use online play but not the catalogue. Dropping from Extra or Premium to Essential keeps multiplayer, cloud storage and monthly games while removing catalogue access, so any catalogue game you are part way through stops working either way.

Does Cancelling Remove Time I Already Paid For?

No. Cancelling turns off auto-renewal only. Stacked time from prepaid cards or multi-month purchases stays on the account until it runs out, and it is not refundable once redeemed.

    The Short Version

Cancel in Account Management under Subscription, or on the PS5 under Payment and Subscriptions, then confirm the entry shows an expiry date. Access runs to the end of the paid period, and Reactivate Subscription undoes it any time before the next payment.

Before the end date, buy anything from the monthly games or catalogue that you actually want to keep, ideally at the member discount, because those purchases survive and the licences do not. Copy important saves to local console storage. And if you want a refund, it has to be your first payment, inside 14 days including any trial, and it may be reduced for what you have used.
