A calm, current walkthrough of Fortnite parental controls in 2026, covering the Epic PIN, Cabined Accounts, chat, spending, playtime and console settings.
Fortnite parental controls live in your child’s Epic Games account, not in the game, and they sit behind a six digit PIN you set once and can reset but never delete. Sign in to the Epic account portal on your child’s account, open Parental Controls, create the PIN, then set chat, purchase confirmation and time limits. If they play on PlayStation, Xbox or Switch, that console has a second, separate layer you also need to configure.
If you are starting from scratch across every device in the house, our hub guide on how to set up parental controls covers the wider picture, and the closest sibling title to this one is our walkthrough of Roblox parental controls.
Fortnite parental controls are not a Fortnite feature. They are an Epic Games account feature, applied across Fortnite, Rocket League, Fall Guys and the Epic Games Store, and they travel with the account rather than the device. Three layers stack on top of each other, and parents get caught out by configuring one and expecting the others to follow.
Epic states on its safety site that its controls operate independently of the console systems. Neither overrides the other, so the most restrictive setting wins.
One piece of background explains several features. After its settlement with the US Federal Trade Commission, Epic rebuilt its purchase flow and defaults: hold to purchase confirmation, an explicit choice about saving payment details, self service cancellation for cosmetics, and a chargeback policy that no longer bans accounts for disputing a charge. It also shipped Cabined Accounts, set chat to Nobody by default for under 18s, turned the mature language filter on by default for under 16s, and capped daily spending for under 13s. Those are the defaults you inherit before you touch anything.
Everything is configured from the Epic account portal while signed in to your child’s account. There is no separate parent account: you log in as them, then lock the settings behind a PIN they do not know.
The in game screen is a subset: the AI permission and the Epic Games Store rating restrictions are portal only. Use Fortnite for a quick change and the portal for the real setup.
Do it with your child in the room. Controls a child understands are controls they do not spend weeks circumventing, and a child who knows the rule is more likely to tell you when a stranger messages them.
A Fortnite cabined account is Epic’s automatic safety net. When a player gives a date of birth putting them under 13, or under their country’s age of digital consent, Epic places the account into a cabined state. These are switched off until a verified parent or guardian consents:
What surprises parents is how much still works. A child in a Cabined Account plays Fortnite, Rocket League and Fall Guys normally, including squads, and keeps everything previously purchased or earned, so existing skins and V-Bucks are not confiscated. They can also add a Fortnite gift card balance and spend it in game.
An account leaves cabined status one of two ways: a parent completes verified consent, or the player reaches the relevant age. No support ticket shortcuts it.
Epic emails the parent or guardian address a message titled Your Child Created an Epic Games Account. That email is the entire flow. If it lands in spam, the account stays cabined indefinitely.
Consent is not permanent. Return to Parental Controls any time to change what is allowed or withdraw a permission, and account deletion is available through Epic’s self service tools.
Under Social Permissions you get two matching controls, Epic Voice Chat Permission and Epic Text Chat Permission, each with four levels:
For any account registered as under 18, Epic already defaults chat to Nobody, profiles to hidden and parties to invite only. If your teenager’s chat works, somebody changed it, which is worth a conversation.
Two practical notes. Friends Only does not stop a child accepting a request from a stranger and then talking to them, which is why the friend request control matters. And console party chat sits outside Fortnite entirely: a child can be in a PlayStation or Xbox party of six while Fortnite voice is set to Nobody, and Epic cannot block that.
Filter Mature Language in Social Permissions masks flagged words in Fortnite text chat and is on by default for players registered as under 16. It does not touch voice, so treat it as tidying rather than protection.
Content ratings matter more, because Fortnite in 2026 hosts thousands of creator made islands, each with its own IARC age rating:
An AI Permissions group also appears in 2026, with a toggle for voice and written communication with AI features. If you are unsure what your child is interacting with, switch it off for now.
Epic’s post settlement purchase flow requires a deliberate hold to purchase action rather than a single tap, asks explicitly whether to save payment details, and allows self service cancellation of cosmetics for a period after buying.
One gap matters: the payment PIN protects money leaving your card, not V-Bucks already on the account. A balance from a gift card or an earlier top up can be spent in the Item Shop without your PIN. The levers there are the content rating and random items settings.
Switch the email on. It is the lowest effort, highest signal setting here, because it tells you what is actually happening rather than what you assume. For a wider view of how gaming time fits alongside the rest of a week, our piece on screen time and strategies for balance is a useful companion.
The control is Require a PIN to Add Friends, under Social Permissions. With it on, your child cannot send or accept a friend request without the six digit PIN.
This matters more than its name suggests, because the other social permissions are defined relative to the friends list. Friends Only voice chat means nothing if the list fills with people your child met in a match twenty minutes ago. Also check the privacy defaults: for under 18 accounts Epic sets profiles to hidden and parties to invite only.
| Setting | Where it lives | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Six digit PIN | Parental Controls | Gates every other setting. Can be reset, never deleted |
| Epic Voice Chat Permission | Social Permissions | Epic voice only, four levels. Not console party chat |
| Epic Text Chat Permission | Social Permissions | In game text chat, same four levels |
| Filter Mature Language | Social Permissions | Masks flagged words in text. Default on under 16 |
| Require a PIN to Add Friends | Social Permissions | Blocks sending and accepting friend requests |
| Require a PIN for Epic Games Payments | Purchasing Permissions | All real money spending, including V-Bucks and Crew |
| Allow Paid Random Items | Purchasing Permissions | Purchases with randomised contents |
| Daily spending limit | Automatic, under 13 | Caps spending at 100 US dollars a day. Not adjustable |
| Fortnite content ratings | Age Rating Restrictions | Blocks creator islands rated above your chosen level |
| Time limit controls | Time Limit Controls | Daily allowance, permitted windows, separate play and create limits, extension requests |
| Time reports and report email | Time Reports | Weekly activity breakdown, dashboard and email |
| AI communication permission | AI Permissions | Voice and written interaction with AI features |
Epic’s settings are account wide. The console’s are device wide. You need both. Our hub guide on how to set up parental controls walks the same ground device by device, and if you would rather manage every screen in one place, compare the best parental control apps that sit above all of them.
The steps below cover what Fortnite needs. For the full console walkthrough, including eShop spending and account linking, see our guide to Nintendo Switch parental controls.
| What you want to control | Epic layer | Console layer |
|---|---|---|
| Fortnite in game voice | Yes, four levels | Yes, usually allow or block |
| Console party chat outside Fortnite | No | Yes, the only layer that can |
| Creator island age ratings | Yes, by IARC rating | No, the console sees one Fortnite rating |
| Real money spending | Yes, PIN on payments | Yes, PS monthly limit, Xbox approval, Switch eShop |
| Friend requests | Yes, PIN to add friends | Yes, Xbox and Switch 2 GameChat |
| Playtime limits | Yes, on every device | Yes, that console only |
What you cannot do is delete the PIN. Epic’s documentation is explicit that once set it cannot be removed, only reset. A PIN on its own restricts nothing, so an account with a PIN and every setting open behaves like one with no PIN. If your child has turned 18, resetting it to a code they choose is the practical equivalent of removing it. Note also that on a Cabined Account, opening the Epic settings will not unlock chat and purchases until verified consent is done.
If the email never arrives, or you no longer control that address, use the parent or guardian request form in Epic’s support centre and expect to prove the relationship.
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Forgotten six digit PIN | Set months ago, never written down | Use Forgot your PIN? on the parental controls page. The reset email goes to the parent address on a minor’s account. If that address is lost, use Epic’s guardian request form |
| Voice chat still working after setting it to Nobody | Your child is in a PlayStation or Xbox party, outside Fortnite entirely | Set communication restrictions in PlayStation Family Management or Xbox privacy settings. Epic cannot block console parties |
| Child made a purchase anyway | They spent an existing V-Bucks or gift card balance, which the payment PIN does not cover | Use Fortnite’s self service cancellation for eligible cosmetics, turn off Allow Paid Random Items, remove saved payment details |
| Real money purchase despite the PIN | The payment PIN was never switched on, or payment went through the console store | Turn the Epic payment PIN on, then set the PlayStation monthly limit or Xbox purchase approval |
| Settings not applying on console | A different Epic account is signed in, or the console profile is an adult profile | Check the Epic account name in the Fortnite lobby, and confirm the console profile is a child account inside your family group |
Fortnite is rated Teen by the ESRB in North America and PEGI 12 in Europe, reflecting cartoon violence. That covers Battle Royale. Creator made islands carry their own IARC ratings and some sit higher, which is why the content rating setting exists. Epic separately treats under 13 accounts as Cabined Accounts regardless of the game rating. Roblox draws its age lines differently again, which we cover in our guide to Roblox parental controls.
You can stop them buying V-Bucks with Require a PIN for Epic Games Payments, and stop randomised purchases by turning off Allow Paid Random Items. You cannot block spending of a balance already on the account. If that is the concern, remove saved payment methods and set the console spending limit too.
Not without the six digit PIN. Every parental control screen asks for it. The realistic risks are a PIN that is a shared family code, or a parent email field holding your child’s own address, which would deliver the reset email to them. Fix both and the controls hold.
Six. Epic’s support documentation describes it as a six digit PIN. The Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app uses a separate PIN of four to eight digits, a common source of confusion in households with a Switch.
Use a browser. Sign in to your child’s Epic account, open the account settings, select Parental Controls on the left, create or enter the PIN, and configure from there. The portal carries the full setting list.
The restricted state Epic applies automatically to players under 13, or under their country’s age of digital consent. Chat, real money purchases, non Epic downloads, account linking, custom display names and SMS two factor are disabled until a parent completes verified consent. The games themselves still work.
Start with Fortnite’s own cancellation flow, which reverses eligible cosmetic purchases within a window. Epic rebuilt these flows after its FTC settlement and revised its chargeback policy so disputing a charge no longer bans the account, but self service is faster than involving your bank.
Sign in to the child’s Epic account, open Parental Controls, enter the PIN and read down the groups. Then check the console layer in PlayStation Family Management, the Microsoft Family Safety app or the Nintendo Switch app. For more walkthroughs, see the REVERB blog, or the wider work we do at REVERB.
Fortnite parental controls in 2026 sit in the Epic Games account, not the game. Sign in to your child’s account, open Parental Controls, create a six digit PIN nobody else in the house knows, and check the parent or guardian email is yours.
Then set five things and you cover most of the risk. Chat to Friends Only or Nobody. Require a PIN to Add Friends, so Friends Only means something. Require a PIN for Epic Games Payments, and turn off Allow Paid Random Items. A Fortnite content rating ceiling, because creator islands are rated individually. Time limits plus the weekly Time Reports email.
If your child is under 13 their account is a Cabined Account, and chat and purchases stay off until you complete verified consent from the email Epic sent you. If they play on PlayStation, Xbox or Switch, spend another ten minutes in that platform’s family settings, because console party chat is the one thing Epic cannot reach. Where the same rules need to follow your child across phones and tablets as well, one of the best parental control apps is the tidier way to hold it together. Write the PIN down somewhere sensible, because it can be reset but never deleted.
Do all of it with your child watching. Controls that are explained get respected. Controls that are hidden get bypassed.
