In 2026, Roblox parental controls run through a linked parent account, not a PIN. You create or upgrade your own adult Roblox account, verify that you are 18 or over, link it to your child’s account, and then manage content maturity, chat, voice, spending and screen time from your own device.
Roblox also sorts every under-16 player into a Roblox Kids or Roblox Select account automatically after an age check, which sets a safe baseline before you change a single setting.
Roblox changed more between late 2025 and mid 2026 than in the five years before it, so several menu paths in older guides no longer exist. This guide was checked against Roblox’s own support documentation, Safety Center and newsroom, and was last verified on 27 September 2026.
Four things moved, and they matter more than any individual toggle.
The Parent PIN is gone. This is the biggest change and the reason most older guides are wrong. Roblox’s support page says it has “replaced parent PIN with Roblox accounts with parent privileges.” There is no four digit PIN in Account Settings any more, and any guide telling you to set one is out of date. Everything runs through a linked adult account.
Age checks became mandatory for chat. On 7 January 2026 Roblox rolled out facial age estimation worldwide, becoming the first large gaming platform to require an age check from users of all ages before they can chat. It began in Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands in December 2025. By April 2026 Roblox said more than half of its global daily users, and about two thirds of US daily users, had completed one.
Roblox Kids and Roblox Select launched. Announced in April 2026 and globally available from 16 June 2026, these account types sort under-16 players automatically: Kids for ages 5 to 8, Select for 9 to 15, standard for 16 and over. Each carries its own content and chat ceiling. An account that has not completed an age check is held at the most restrictive settings until it does.
Content Maturity replaced the old age recommendations. Experiences are no longer labelled “All Ages” or “13+”. They carry a maturity label: Minimal, Mild, Moderate or Restricted. Roblox has said it will begin moving to the International Age Rating Coalition framework, the system behind ESRB and PEGI ratings, later in 2026, so expect the labels to shift again.
One smaller change: Roblox renamed Friends to Connections in 2025, then reverted after player pushback. In 2026 the app says Friends, with a closer tier called Trusted Friends. Some help articles still say Connections. They mean the same thing.
Roblox now works with two overlapping sets of age groups, and most of the confusion parents run into comes from mixing them up.
Chat age groups. After an age check, every user is placed in one of six groups: under 9, 9 to 12, 13 to 15, 16 to 17, 18 to 20, and 21 and over. By default a user can chat with their own group and the groups directly above and below it. A 12 year old can therefore reach under-9s and 13 to 15 year olds, but not adults. Chat is off by default for the under-9 group unless a parent turns it on.
Account tiers. Separately, anyone under 16 sits in Roblox Kids (5 to 8) or Roblox Select (9 to 15). The tier decides which games your child can open and which chat features exist at all. The chat group then decides who they can talk to within those features.
| Age check result | Account tier | Chat age group | Can chat with by default |
| 5 to 8 | Roblox Kids | Under 9 | Nobody until a parent turns in-game chat on, then under 9 and 9 to 12 |
| 9 to 12 | Roblox Select | 9 to 12 | Under 9, 9 to 12, 13 to 15 |
| 13 to 15 | Roblox Select | 13 to 15 | 9 to 12, 13 to 15, 16 to 17 |
| 16 to 17 | Standard | 16 to 17 | 13 to 15, 16 to 17, 18 to 20 |
| 18 to 20 | Standard | 18 to 20 | 16 to 17, 18 to 20, 21 plus |
| 21 plus | Standard | 21 plus | 18 to 20, 21 plus |
Trusted Friends sit outside these ranges, which is why they need their own approval rules, covered below. Exact boundaries can vary by region, and Roblox says it may recheck an age if it suspects the result is wrong.
Set aside about twenty minutes. You will need:
That last point is not only practical. A child who understands why the limits exist is far less likely to spend energy defeating them. These controls are a floor, not a fence. If you are setting up several devices and platforms at once, our walkthrough on how to set up parental controls covers phones, consoles and routers in the same sitting.
Everything else depends on this step. Without a linked parent account you cannot set content maturity, spending, screen time or chat restrictions.
If you already play Roblox, you do not need a second account. Roblox says that if you already have an account, you can link it to your child’s and add parent privileges. Verify as 18 or over in Settings, then link from Parental Controls.
There is no separate parent portal or parent login page. You sign in to your own Roblox account on the website or app, as normal, and open Settings, then Parental Controls. Your linked children are listed there. If the Parental Controls option is missing, your account has not been verified as 18 or over yet. Be wary of sites offering a special “Roblox parent login”: the only real one is the standard Roblox sign in.
One note: a child can unlink the account. Roblox says you then lose the ability to give permission for actions on Roblox, control their privacy settings, or set screen time and spending limits. You are notified, but the link does break.
Since 16 June 2026 every under-16 account sits in one of two tiers, assigned by age check rather than chosen by you. This sets defaults before you touch anything.
Roblox Kids covers ages 5 to 8, permits only Minimal or Mild experiences that have passed Roblox’s selection process, and has all communication off by default. A linked parent can switch in-game chat on. These accounts carry a distinct visual design across the app so they are easy to recognise over a shoulder.
Roblox Select covers ages 9 to 15 and permits Minimal, Mild or Moderate experiences from a curated, regularly updated catalogue. Chat unlocks gradually with safeguards rather than switching on at once, and in-game voice chat stays off unless a parent enables it for a 13 to 15 year old.
Standard Roblox is for 16 and over, permits all rated content except Restricted, and has chat on by default for age-checked users. Restricted content requires a verified 18 plus account.
Accounts progress automatically: Kids becomes Select at 9, Select becomes standard at 16. If a game your child wants is not in the Kids or Select catalogue, you can add it to an approved list from Parental Controls, covered in the next section.
Extra gates apply to the Kids and Select catalogues. Developers must complete ID verification and two factor authentication to be eligible, and social hangouts, freeform drawing experiences and anything carrying the sensitive issues label are excluded by default.
Content Maturity is the Roblox age rating system in its current form, and the main lever over what your child can open. It is separate from the rating Roblox carries in app stores: those describe the most mature content anywhere on the platform, not what a correctly configured Kids or Select account can reach.
| Level | What it permits | Typical fit |
| Minimal | Occasional mild violence, light unrealistic blood, mild fear | Under 9 |
| Mild | Repeated mild violence, heavy unrealistic blood, mild crude humour | 9 to 12 |
| Moderate | Moderate violence, light realistic blood, moderate crude humour, unplayable gambling | 13 to 15 |
| Restricted | Strong violence, heavy realistic blood, alcohol, strong language | 18 and over, age verified only |
Content Maturity is blunt. If your child wants one game above their level, or you want to block a specific title below it, you can override per game.
Blocking and approving individual games works until your child turns 16. Games themed on sensitive social, political or religious issues are hidden from under-13s by default, and can only be allowed from the same screen.
Roblox chat settings are what parents ask about most, and what moved most in 2026. Chat cannot be switched on at all until your child completes an age check, and then it follows the age groups above.
Users under 9 need parental consent before game chat can be enabled at all. These settings cover Roblox’s own chat features, and do not reach chat systems that individual developers build into their games.
Trusted Friends is a tier above ordinary friends. Both users must agree. Once connected, age-checked users get less filtered chat and access to voice features, on the reasoning that these are people the child knows offline.
Two rules matter. Users under 13 need parent approval for each individual Trusted Friend, granted one at a time from your linked account. And teenagers aged 13 to 17 cannot become Trusted Friends with adults unless the connection is made through a real world method such as scanning a QR code in person or importing a phone contact.
Roblox says it continues to block the exchange of personal information between users who are not Trusted Friends, and that conversations remain monitored for serious harm.
Voice is the part of Roblox parents are most uneasy about, and it is also the most tightly gated.
To use voice at all, a user must be at least 13 and have passed facial age estimation or ID verification. Phone number verification no longer counts. Voice is also only offered in some regions.
If your under-13 is asking how to get voice chat, the honest answer is that they cannot yet, and that faking an older age to get it also unlocks older chat groups and content. That is worth saying out loud.
Where each Roblox account restriction sits by default in 2026, and how long you keep control of it.
| Setting | Ages 5 to 8 (Kids) | Ages 9 to 15 (Select) | Ages 16 plus | Parent controls it until |
| Content maturity ceiling | Minimal or Mild | Up to Moderate | All except Restricted | Age 16 |
| Game chat | Off by default, parent can enable | Introduced gradually | On for age-checked users | Age 16 |
| Chat contact range | Under 9 band, 9 to 12 if enabled | Own band plus adjacent | Own band plus adjacent | Age 16 |
| Direct chat in games | Off | Off unless parent consents | Available with age check | Age 16 |
| Voice chat | Off, cannot be enabled | Off under 13; parent can enable at 13 to 15 | Available with age check | Age 16 |
| Trusted Friends | Parent approval per friend | Parent approval per friend under 13 | Self managed | Age 13 |
| Friend list management | Parent manages | Parent manages under 13 | Self managed | Age 13 |
| Block or approve individual games | Yes | Yes | No | Age 16 |
| Monthly spending limit | Parent sets | Parent sets under 13 | Visibility only, 16 to 18 | Age 13 |
| Screen time limit | Parent sets | Parent sets under 13 | Visibility only, 16 to 18 | Age 13 |
| Restricted content | No | No | 18 plus, age verified | Not applicable |
Note the two cut offs. Spending, screen time and friend management stop at 13. Chat, voice and game blocking continue to 16. Between 16 and 18 you keep visibility into spending and screen time but cannot set limits.
Unexpected Robux charges are a common complaint. The controls are good, but off by default.
Two extra levers sit nearby: require approval before your child sends or receives Robux from other users, and restrict or disable trading of Limited items. Both close off common scam routes.
The payment method matters more than any Roblox setting. If your card is saved on your child’s device, remove it, or require a password for every purchase in iOS Screen Time or Google Family Link. Roblox’s limit governs Roblox, not the app store. If a subscription is the problem rather than one-off Robux, our guide on how to cancel Roblox Premium covers stopping the renewal.
On the same screen, Top games shows your child’s twenty most played experiences from the past week. This is often more informative than the limit itself: it tells you what they are doing, not just how long.
Roblox’s limit applies to Roblox only. For a total limit across the device, set it at the operating system level and treat the Roblox limit as a backstop. On what a sensible total looks like, our piece on the impact of screen time on mental health covers the research on where the meaningful thresholds sit.
Blocking is instant and needs no involvement from you. Teach your child to do it themselves, because they will need it when you are not around.
A user you block from the parent account cannot chat directly with your child or add them again without your permission.
Roblox gives parents insights, not transcripts. You see patterns, not content.
You will not see message content. This is deliberate, and in our view the right call. The practical alternative is a conversation: ask who they played with, ask what happened, make it normal to answer. Covert monitoring damages the trust that makes a child tell you when something goes wrong, which is the safety mechanism that actually works.
The age check is now the gate to almost everything on Roblox: chat, voice, the right account tier and the right content. Players can play without one, but an unchecked account is held at the most restrictive defaults.
Roblox states that it does not receive or store biometric data from facial age estimation, and that the provider deletes images and video once the check is processed. ID checks go through the same provider. That is the published policy; if you would rather not have your child’s face scanned at all, the alternatives are to verify their age yourself through a linked parent account, or to leave chat off entirely, which is where an unchecked account sits anyway.
The check is not perfect. Estimation is least accurate near group boundaries, and some children have tried to fool it with altered images or an older sibling’s face. Roblox says it rechecks ages when it suspects fraud, and a mismatch between a stated age and an estimated age triggers a 48 hour grace period before the estimated age applies.
A wrong birthday is the most common way Roblox account restrictions get defeated, and in 2026 it is harder than it was. A self declared birthday no longer unlocks chat on its own: a user claiming to be 16 still has to pass facial age estimation or an ID check, and the estimation will place them in their real group.
Because the parent correction can only be used once, get the date right the first time.
Sometimes the right setting is none at all: during exams, as a consequence, or for a child who is simply too young. Roblox has no off switch of its own, so this happens at the device or network level.
Router level blocking is the most thorough and the easiest to forget, since it also affects anyone else in the house who plays. Pair it with a schedule rather than a permanent block where you can.
Being honest about the limits is more useful than overselling the settings.
None of this makes the controls pointless. It makes them one layer. Router and device level limits cover ground Roblox cannot reach, and it helps to understand how modern game platforms monetise attention, which we cover in our guide to how large game studios build and monetise titles.
The methods parents report most often. Knowing them is not paranoia, it is how you spot the pattern early.
Watch for the second account above all, because it removes every other control at once. Reviewing the friends list every few weeks catches it quickly.
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
| No Parental Controls option in Settings | Your account is not age verified as 18 plus | Complete age verification in Settings using facial age estimation, ID or credit card, then reload |
| Cannot find the Parent PIN | Roblox removed the PIN and replaced it with parent accounts | Create or upgrade an adult account and link it instead |
| Settings you change do not apply | Child is signed in on a second, unlinked account | Check recently played and the friends list, then link or close the second account |
| Chat still off after you enabled it | The child has not completed an age check | Have them complete facial age estimation or ID verification, then recheck |
| Child cannot open a game you approved | Content maturity ceiling still sits below the game’s label | Raise content maturity, or add the game to the allowed list explicitly |
| Account unlinked without warning | The child unlinked it from their side | Relink from Parental Controls; the child must confirm again |
| Spending limit exceeded anyway | Robux bought with a gift card or a third party site | The monthly limit does not cover these; manage at the point of purchase |
| Age estimation returned the wrong group | Estimation is approximate near group boundaries | Retry using Continue with ID, or correct the birthday once from Parental Controls |
| Screen time limit not enforced | Child is 13 or over | Screen time limits stop at 13; use device level limits instead |
| Voice chat unavailable despite settings | Child is under 13, or has not been age checked | Voice cannot be enabled under 13; from 13 it needs an age check and, to 15, parent approval |
Roblox is reasonably safe when the parental controls are configured and the account has passed an age check, and less safe when left at default on an account with an inaccurate birthday. The real risks are contact from strangers through chat, exposure to content above a child’s maturity level, and unplanned spending. All three have direct settings in this guide. Since the 2026 age checks and the Kids and Select tiers, the baseline is meaningfully stronger than two years ago.
With a correctly age-checked account, a 7 year old lands in Roblox Kids: only Minimal or Mild games from a reviewed catalogue, all chat off unless you turn it on, and no voice chat at all. That is a reasonable setup for that age, provided you also set a spending limit, keep payment details off the device, and stay close enough to see what they play.
Roblox allows accounts from age 5, and its tiers reflect what it considers appropriate at each stage: Kids for 5 to 8, Select for 9 to 15, standard from 16. Restricted content requires a verified 18 plus account. App stores rate Roblox for older children and teens, which reflects the platform’s most mature content, not what a correctly configured Kids account sees.
For chat, Roblox uses six groups: under 9, 9 to 12, 13 to 15, 16 to 17, 18 to 20, and 21 and over. Users can chat with their own group and the ones directly either side. For content and features, under-16s are also split into Roblox Kids (5 to 8) and Roblox Select (9 to 15).
Sign in to your own Roblox account on the website or app, then go to Settings and Parental Controls. There is no separate parent login page. If you do not see Parental Controls, verify your account as 18 or over first.
Not the settings themselves, which need your parent account. They can unlink the parent account from their side, which Roblox notifies you about. They can also create a new unlinked account, which is the more common route and the one to watch for.
Sign in to your parent account, go to Settings, then Parental Controls, select your child, and open their friends list. You can see every connection, see which are Trusted Friends, and block or report any of them. You cannot read message content.
No. Roblox removed the Parent PIN and replaced it with linked accounts carrying parent privileges. Any guide telling you to set a four digit PIN is out of date.
Not to play, but yes to chat, unless they verify with ID instead. Since January 2026 an age check is required for chat access. Roblox states it does not receive or store biometric data from the process. A linked parent can also correct a younger child’s age from Parental Controls.
No. Chat still exists, but since January 2026 it only works after an age check, and it is limited to similar age groups. For children under 9 it is off unless a parent turns it on. Many players read the change as chat being removed because their chat stopped working until they completed the check.
No. Voice chat requires an age check confirming the user is 13 or over, and it cannot be enabled for younger children by anyone. For 13 to 15 year olds it stays off unless a parent turns it on.
Kids is for 5 to 8 year olds, limits content to Minimal or Mild, and has all communication off by default. Select is for 9 to 15 year olds, allows content up to Moderate, and introduces chat gradually. Accounts move between them automatically on the child’s birthday.
Set a monthly limit covering Robux and subscriptions from Parental Controls, then Settings You Manage, then Spending restrictions, and require approval for Robux transfers. The limit does not cover gift card Robux. Removing saved payment methods from the device closes the larger gap.
From your parent account, open Parental Controls, select your child, open Content restrictions, and add the experience to the blocked list by name. You can also approve individual games above your child’s maturity level or outside the Kids and Select catalogues. Both apply until age 16.
A mutual connection with fewer chat filters and access to voice features, intended for people the child knows offline. Both users must agree. Under-13s need parent approval for each one, and 13 to 17 year olds cannot add adults unless the connection was made in person, such as by QR code scan.
Roblox stops parental screen time and spending limits at 13. Between 16 and 18 you keep visibility but cannot set caps. Device or router level limits are the practical route for older teenagers, and worth agreeing with them rather than imposing.
Account level settings follow the Roblox account everywhere, so content maturity, chat and spending restrictions apply wherever your child signs in. Console family settings sit on top and are configured separately in each console’s own menu. If you play older titles on the same hardware, our explainer on emulation and the legality of ROMs covers a related question parents often raise.
In 2026, Roblox parental controls live on a linked adult account, not a PIN. Create or upgrade a Roblox account, verify yourself as 18 or over with a selfie, an ID or a card, then link it to your child’s account from Settings, then Parental Controls.
Make sure your child has completed an age check with the right birthday, because that decides their tier and chat group. Then set four things. Content maturity, under Content restrictions, decides what your child can open. Communication decides who can talk to them, including voice, which is closed to under-13s entirely. Spending restrictions set a monthly Robux and subscription cap. Screen time sets a daily limit and shows their twenty most played games.
Roblox’s account tiers do much of the work first: Kids for 5 to 8 has chat off entirely, Select for 9 to 15 introduces it gradually. Spending, screen time and friend controls end at 13. Chat, voice and game blocking continue to 16.
The controls cannot read chat, follow your child to another app, or govern a second account. That second account is the workaround that defeats everything else, so check the friends list every few weeks. Set the controls with your child rather than around them, and keep asking who they played with. That conversation is the part that actually holds.
