    Shift4Shop vs Shopify In 2026

Shift4Shop vs Shopify in 2026, compared on published pricing, card rates, gateway fees, themes, apps, support and migration paths, with September 2026 figures.

Shift4Shop and Shopify are usually framed as the budget option and the serious one. The published numbers do not support that framing. Entry subscriptions tie. Online card rates at the base tier are identical to the cent. Several features Shopify gates behind its upper plans ship in Shift4Shop’s base platform. Where Shopify pulls decisively ahead is not the storefront. It is everything around the storefront: apps, themes, processor reach, and how fast a merchant can hire someone to work on the store.

This comparison uses only figures the two vendors publish on their own sites, checked in September 2026. Where a vendor does not publish a number, that is said plainly. The gaps are as informative as the figures.

    Pricing And Plans

Shopify publishes four plans. Basic is $39 a month billed monthly or $29 billed annually, includes no staff accounts and carries up to $5,000 in credits. Grow is $105 or $79, adds five staff accounts, up to 87% off shipping and up to $7,500 in credits. Advanced is $399 or $299, raises staff to fifteen and adds live third party shipping rates and up to $10,000 in credits. Plus starts at $2,300 a month on a three year term with unlimited staff, a fully customizable checkout, up to 200 POS Pro locations and priority 24/7 phone support. Beyond that figure, Plus contract pricing is not published, so a Plus quote is a negotiation rather than a list price.

Shift4Shop also publishes four. End-to-End eCommerce is $0 a month with unlimited staff users, unlimited products, unlimited bandwidth and unlimited online sales. Basic Store is $29.00 with two staff users and sales up to $100k a year. Plus Store is $79.00 with five staff users and up to $250k. Pro Store is $229.00 with fifteen staff users and up to $1M. A 10% discount applies to paid plans prepaid for twelve months, and paid plans auto-upgrade to the next tier once trailing twelve month sales reach the plan maximum, a cost mechanic Shopify does not have.

Like for like, entry ties at $29 on Shopify’s annual billing against $39 monthly, the middle runs $79.00 against $105 and $229.00 against $399, and at the top the two stop being comparable, because Plus starts an order of magnitude above Shift4Shop’s highest published price.

Two conditions must travel with the $0 figure every time it is quoted. The free End-to-End plan is only available to United States merchants at this time, and its gateway is Shift4 Payments with pre-approved credit card rates of 2.9% + $0.30. With those attached, the picture still favors Shift4Shop for a US merchant happy with Shift4 processing, because Shopify has no equivalent to an unlimited storefront at no subscription cost.

One observed behavior belongs here. Visitors to shift4shop.com from outside the United States are shown a $41 a month unlimited plan together with the line that the platform is not yet available in their country or region. That is site behavior rather than a confirmed international price list, and reads as a signal about availability rather than a fifth plan. Merchants weighing the field can also read our roundup of Shift4Shop alternatives.

    Payment Processing And Transaction Fees

Shopify’s online card rate falls as the plan rises: 2.9% + 30c on Basic, 2.7% + 30c on Grow, 2.5% + 30c on Advanced, and an unpublished rate on Plus that the pricing page describes only as its most competitive. On top of that sits a third party gateway fee of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. Shopify Payments is not mandatory, but the fee is waived only for Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, Shop Pay Installments and PayPal Express, so the processor choice is priced rather than free.

Shift4Shop publishes a two row table on its own payments page that states the trade plainly. Running Shift4Shop with Shift4 costs a $0 platform fee, no transaction fee and 2.9% + $0.30 in processing. Running it with another payment provider costs a $229 a month platform fee, still no transaction fee and still 2.9% + $0.30. Shift4 processing is therefore not mandatory, but declining it costs $229 a month, the Pro Store price. The structural point is that no tier carries a per transaction penalty. The cost of independence is fixed, not proportional.

The arithmetic is worth doing. Shopify Basic’s 2% third party fee equals Shift4Shop’s flat $229 at roughly $11,450 a month in third party gateway volume. Below that, Shopify Basic is cheaper for running an outside processor. Above it, Shift4Shop is, and the gap widens as the store grows. The calculation tilts back only on Advanced or Plus, where the percentage drops to 0.6% and 0.2%.

The other half of the picture is reach rather than rate. Shopify Payments is available in 40 countries and regions. Shift4Shop’s own site tells non-US visitors the platform is not yet available in their country or region, which makes the processing question moot outside the United States before rates are compared. Domestically in the US the entry card rate is identical at 2.9% + $0.30, and gateway policy decides it.

    Themes And Design

Shift4Shop states 100+ premium and free themes, and its plans page repeats a figure of 50+ mobile ready themes. Its theme gallery currently shows 105 themes, every one marked free. Paid theme prices could not be verified for this comparison because the premium themes URL returns a 404, so Shift4Shop does not currently present a working paid theme catalog to the public. First party design cost is effectively zero, with the caveat that 105 is a small pool to find a distinctive look in.

Shopify states over 800 free and paid themes. Paid prices observed on the theme store landing page ranged from $220 to $420, with Retina at $220, Helix at $250, Soft at $270, Majestic at $290, Focal at $320, Cornerstone at $360 and Broadcast at $420. That is a real one time cost for most serious stores, and it buys a much larger catalog. Merchants who would rather commission something bespoke can compare specialists in our list of top Shopify web design agencies.

Under the hood the approaches differ. Shift4Shop uses the Core Templating Engine, with template pages such as frame.html and leftbar.html, code blocks and variables, plus CSS, and it offers a Core Theme Editor, a Page Editor and full access to the HTML and CSS files behind a theme. Shopify uses Liquid, with a theme editor built around sections and blocks that lets non developers rearrange pages without touching code. Direct file access rewards a developer. Sections and blocks reward a marketer restructuring a landing page without a deployment. The hiring market follows the same split, and Liquid is a skill a merchant can buy on any given day.

    Apps And Extensions

Shopify states that its app store carries over 16,000 apps, the single largest gap between the two platforms.

Shift4Shop publishes no app count anywhere on apps.shift4shop.com. That is worth stating plainly rather than substituting a third party number, because the absence is the finding. A merchant cannot size the catalog from the vendor’s own materials, so the only reliable method is to search the app store for the integrations the business depends on before signing up. Subscription billing, a particular ERP, a 3PL connector, a review platform, a tax engine: check each individually and treat the result as the answer.

The practical consequence differs from what the raw numbers suggest. A store with conventional needs often finds that Shift4Shop’s built in features cover what a Shopify merchant installs apps to do, which narrows the gap in real terms. A store with an unusual requirement is far more likely to find an off the shelf answer in a catalog of 16,000 than in an unsized one. Fulfillment is a good test case, and merchants working through it can review Shift4Shop 3PL and fulfillment companies.

    Built In Features

Shift4Shop’s all-features page lists an unusually broad set as included in the base platform: built in SEO tools, a built in blog, international payments, a POS module, bulk quantity discounts, a purchase order module, an abandoned cart saver, unlimited products, staff user accounts with permissions and unlimited bandwidth. Several are things merchants elsewhere pay monthly for, and the purchase order module is not a common base feature.

Shopify includes SEO controls and blogging on every plan, unlimited products on every plan and unmetered bandwidth. POS Lite is included, but POS Pro costs an extra $89 a month per location, a meaningful line item for a multi location retailer. Staff accounts are capped by tier, with none included on Basic at all.

The larger differences are in what Shopify gates. B2B functionality is gated, customer specific catalogs are marked as a Plus feature, and site personalization by audience requires Advanced or Plus. Multi currency selling requires Shopify Payments, and per Shopify’s own documentation only stores using Shopify Payments with one page checkout get the full feature, so a merchant wanting both an outside processor and multi currency is being asked to choose. Businesses in this territory can compare partners in our list of Shopify agencies for B2B and wholesale ecommerce.

Read together, the feature comparison inverts the pricing comparison. Shopify’s lower tiers are cheaper to enter and more expensive to complete, because the road to wholesale pricing, personalization and multi currency runs through upgrades and app subscriptions. Shift4Shop prices tiers on sales volume rather than feature unlocks, so a Basic Store merchant gets the same platform as a Pro Store one.

    Support

Shift4Shop publishes phone support on 1-800-828-6650 and (954) 582-5080, staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year including holidays, alongside 24/7/365 live chat and ticketing. Behind the live channels sit a self serve knowledgebase, eCommerce University, a developer portal and community forums. Enterprise customers add a dedicated webmaster team and a technical account manager. Crucially, the plans page repeats 24×7 tech support on every tier including the free End-to-End plan, so the commitment is not reserved for the top of the ladder.

On the Shopify side, the only support commitment verifiable on an official page is priority 24/7 phone support, which Shopify names as a Plus benefit on its pricing page. What Shopify offers on Basic, Grow and Advanced could not be verified from an official source, so nothing is asserted about those tiers here. For a small team without in house technical staff the published difference is worth real money, because calling a human at 2am during a checkout outage is not something merchants price until they need it.

    Ecosystem And Longevity

What is measurable: Shopify publishes 16,000+ apps and 800+ themes, and Shift4Shop publishes neither count. Shift4Shop also publishes no partner directory size and no partner tier names, which is why an agency describing itself as a Shift4Shop partner at a named tier should be read as self described rather than verified. The pool of firms advertising deep Shift4Shop expertise is visibly small next to the Shopify partner bench, which is a fact about the hiring market.

What is not established: no official Shift4 statement about the platform’s future was located during this review, in either direction. Third party commentary about merchants moving away does exist, and it is fair to note that, but it is commentary and this article neither endorses it nor treats it as a vendor position. Shift4Shop continues to sell four plans and continues to take new merchants.

So the risk a merchant is actually weighing is narrower and more practical than the one usually described. It is hiring depth and third party tooling, not platform survival. Can you find a developer who knows the Core Templating Engine when your current one leaves? Can you find an app for the tax engine your accountant insists on? Both are answerable before signing up, and merchants sizing that bench can look at Shift4Shop experts and development agencies and judge for themselves.

Shopify’s position here is straightforward. Replacing an agency, hiring a contractor or finding an app for an obscure requirement all happen faster on Shopify. That is what ecosystem scale buys, and it is a legitimate reason to pay more.

    Migrating Between Them

Moving from Shopify to Shift4Shop is documented by Shift4Shop itself, with a dedicated how to migrate guide on its own comparison pages. Shift4Shop also sells a webmaster data migration service for the job and lists a Next-Cart migration app in its own app store.

Moving from Shift4Shop to Shopify is not documented by Shopify. Its help center names Amazon, Clover, Etsy, eBay, GoDaddy, Lightspeed, Square, Squarespace, Wix and WooCommerce as source platforms, and Shift4Shop and 3dcart appear on neither list. Every real path runs through a third party or manual work. The generic options are manual copy and paste, product and customer CSV import, third party migration apps, hiring a Shopify Partner, or a custom build on the Customer, Order and Transaction APIs.

Historical orders deserve a specific warning, because they are where these projects go wrong. There is no CSV route for order history into Shopify. Bringing it across requires a migration app or direct work against the Order and Transaction APIs, so the data merchants most want to keep has the least supported import path. Scope order history first rather than last, and our guide to Shift4Shop to Shopify migration services covers the providers who handle it.

The documented path is therefore better going toward Shift4Shop than away from it. That does not make it the better platform, but switching costs are not symmetrical, and a merchant choosing today should price the exit as well as the entry.

How To Choose Between Shift4Shop And Shopify

Which One Is Cheaper For Your Sales Volume?

Work it from your own numbers rather than the headline prices. A US merchant happy to process through Shift4 Payments gets an End-to-End plan at $0 with no Shopify equivalent, and the comparison ends quickly. If you want an outside processor, the crossover sits at roughly $11,450 a month in third party gateway volume, where Shopify Basic’s 2% fee equals Shift4Shop’s flat $229 platform fee. Below that Shopify Basic costs less, above it Shift4Shop does. Model the trailing twelve month caps too, because paid plans auto-upgrade at the plan maximum and a fast growing merchant will pass $100k and then $250k on a forecastable schedule.

Do You Want To Keep Your Own Payment Processor?

This is the cleanest fork in the comparison. Shift4Shop charges no per transaction fee on any tier and prices an outside gateway at a fixed $229 a month. Shopify charges 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus, waived only for Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, Shop Pay Installments and PayPal Express. A fixed fee favors volume and a percentage favors small stores, so a low volume merchant with a processor relationship they will not give up is usually better off on Shopify, and a high volume one is usually better off on Shift4Shop. With no attachment to a processor, both charge 2.9% + $0.30 at entry and this question decides nothing.

How Much Do You Need From An App Store?

Be specific rather than general. Shopify publishes over 16,000 apps and Shift4Shop publishes no count at all, but the number that matters is how many apps you will actually install. List the integrations your business already runs on, then search both app stores for each before committing. If the list is short and conventional, Shift4Shop’s built in POS, purchase orders, bulk quantity discounts and abandoned cart saver may cover it without a single subscription. If it is long, unusual or likely to keep growing, the larger catalog is worth paying for monthly.

Are You Selling Outside The United States?

If the answer is yes, this outranks every other question here. Shopify Payments is available in 40 countries and regions. Shift4Shop’s free End-to-End plan is only available to United States merchants at this time, and non-US visitors to shift4shop.com are shown the line that the platform is not yet available in their country or region. Multi currency on Shopify carries its own condition, since it requires Shopify Payments and, per Shopify’s documentation, the full feature applies to stores using Shopify Payments with one page checkout. That is a constraint inside a working international offering rather than a barrier to entry.

Who Is Each One Actually Built For?

Shift4Shop suits a US based merchant who wants a broad feature set in the base price, no per transaction penalty, round the clock human support on every tier and a low or zero subscription, and who accepts a smaller theme pool, an unsized app catalog and a narrower hiring market. Shopify suits a merchant who values ecosystem scale, international payment reach, a large partner bench and 800 plus themes, and who accepts percentage based gateway fees and feature gating as the price. Most decisions come down to which list contains the thing the business cannot compromise on.

    Conclusion

On the published numbers, Shift4Shop wins on unit economics and included feature breadth. Entry card rates are identical at 2.9% + $0.30. Entry subscriptions tie at $29 once Shopify’s annual discount applies, and the free tier has no Shopify equivalent. The mid and upper tiers undercut Shopify on monthly billing, $79.00 against $105 and $229.00 against $399, and there is no third party gateway penalty on any tier. Unlimited staff users come with a $0 plan where Shopify Basic includes none. POS, purchase orders, bulk quantity discounts and abandoned cart recovery are base features, and 24/7 support is published on every plan.

Shopify wins on ecosystem scale, international reach and the depth of people available to work on it. Over 16,000 apps and 800 plus themes against catalogs that are either small or unpublished. Payment processing in 40 countries and regions against a platform that tells non-US visitors it is not yet available in their region. Documented migration tooling and a partner bench where replacing a developer takes days rather than weeks.

Two conditions have to appear anywhere that $0 figure does, and they are the difference between a fair comparison and a misleading one. The free End-to-End plan is United States only at this time, and stepping away from Shift4 processing costs $229 a month. Attach those and the choice gets clear. A US merchant with conventional requirements and either low revenue or high gateway volume will do well on Shift4Shop. A merchant selling internationally, needing gated B2B and personalization features, or planning to keep adding tools for years should pay Shopify’s premium and be glad of the ecosystem. If the next step is finding a team to build or move the store, our directory of ecommerce companies is a reasonable place to start.
