How To Refund A Game On PS5 And PSN In 2026

Sony refunds games and DLC within 14 days of purchase, but only if you have not downloaded or streamed the content.

That second condition is the whole story. It is not about playtime. Downloading alone voids the refund, and since a PS5 will happily start downloading a purchase automatically, plenty of people lose the option within seconds of buying without touching the game.

If you have not downloaded it, the route is PlayStation Store, Transaction History, select the purchase, then Request Refund. If that option is missing, contact PlayStation Support through the online assistant.

There are exceptions worth knowing: faulty content can be refunded outside the normal limits, and pre-orders run on a more generous clock. This guide covers all of it, including how long the money takes.

    What This Guide Covers

The Download Rule That Decides Everything

Sony’s policy on games and DLC has two conditions, and they work very differently from the model most people have in their heads from Steam.

    Condition

    What it means in practice

    Within 14 days of purchase

    Straightforward.

    Not downloaded or streamed

The decisive one. It triggers on download alone, with no play required. A game your console downloaded overnight is no longer refundable

There is no two-hour grace period here. Sony is not measuring how much you played, it is measuring whether the content reached your console at all. That makes the PlayStation policy stricter than Steam’s in the common case and, occasionally, more generous, because if you genuinely have not downloaded it then you can refund a game you bought thirteen days ago without any argument about playtime.

The practical rule that follows: if you think you might want to return something, do not let it download. Cancel the download in the queue immediately, then file the request.

How To Request A PS5 Refund

    1. Stop any download in progress before you do anything else, if the purchase has started downloading and you have not yet let it finish.
    2. Open PlayStation Store and go to Transaction History, either on the console or signed in on the web.
    3. Select the purchase you want refunded.
    4. Choose Request Refund if it appears. This is the self-serve route and it is the fastest.
    5. If there is no Request Refund option, contact PlayStation Support through the online assistant or support chat, with the transaction date and the reason.

The absence of a Request Refund button usually means the system has already decided you are ineligible, most often because the content was downloaded. It is still worth contacting support if you believe the facts are on your side, particularly for a faulty product.

What Is Refundable And What Is Not

    What you bought

    Refundable?

    The condition

    Games and DLC

    Yes

Within 14 days, and not downloaded or streamed

In-game consumables bought from PS Store

    Yes

Within 14 days, and the game must not have been launched since the purchase

In-game purchases made inside the game

    No

Only PS Store purchases are covered

    Pre-orders

    Yes

    See the pre-order section below.

    PlayStation Plus

    First payment only

Within 14 days of signup, trial time included, and reduced in proportion to use

    Faulty content

    Yes

    Refundable outside the normal limits

    Wallet top-ups

    No

    Not refundable unless faulty

    Online ID changes

    No

    Not refundable

    Voucher codes

    No

    Not refundable

The consumables line is worth reading twice. A currency pack or item bundle bought through the PlayStation Store is refundable within 14 days provided you have not launched the game since buying it. Launch the game once and it is gone, even if you never spent the currency.

    Pre-Orders Get Better Terms

Pre-orders are the one place PlayStation is genuinely generous, and the terms depend on how early you ordered.

    • Ordered more than 14 days before release: you can request a refund at any point up to the release date, as long as you have not downloaded the main content.
    • Ordered less than 14 days before release: the normal 14 days from purchase applies, again provided the main content is not downloaded.

So a pre-order placed six months out is refundable for six months. That makes an early PlayStation pre-order much lower risk than it looks, right up until launch day, when the download starts and the option closes.

Faulty Content: The Exception That Beats The Rules

Sony’s policy states that faulty content can be refunded outside the normal time and download limits. This is the route for a game that does not run, crashes constantly, or is broken in a way support cannot resolve.

Two things make these requests work. Be specific about the fault rather than describing disappointment, because “it is not what I expected” is not a fault and “it crashes on launch on a PS5 with the current firmware” is. And go through support troubleshooting first, since a request that shows you tried the fixes is treated differently from one that has not.

Your statutory consumer rights may also go further than Sony’s policy, particularly in the EU, UK and Australia, where rights covering faulty digital goods sit above a store’s own terms.

How Long A PlayStation Refund Takes

Sony quotes 30 to 60 days for a refund to arrive. That is markedly slower than most digital stores and it is worth knowing up front so you are not chasing it at day ten.

The money goes back to the original payment method where possible. Where that is not possible, Sony credits your PSN wallet instead, and wallet funds cannot be withdrawn, so they can only ever be spent on PlayStation.

Do not open a chargeback while a refund is in progress. It typically results in the account being suspended, which costs you access to everything else you own on it.

    Stopping The Auto-Download Trap

Since downloading is what kills the refund, the single most useful habit is controlling when downloads start.

    • Buy on the web or the mobile app rather than the console if you are unsure, since a console purchase is more likely to queue a download immediately.
    • Check your automatic download settings on the PS5 and turn them off if you frequently buy things you might reconsider.
    • If a download has already started, cancel it in the download queue before you file, rather than after.
    • Decide quickly. Fourteen days sounds generous but the download condition usually closes the window far sooner.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Refund A Game On PS5?

Open PlayStation Store, go to Transaction History, select the purchase and choose Request Refund. It has to be within 14 days of buying and the content must not have been downloaded or streamed. If the option is missing, contact PlayStation Support.

    Can I Refund A PS5 Game I Have Downloaded?

Not under the standard policy. Downloading voids the refund on its own, without any playtime. The exception is faulty content, which Sony will refund outside the normal limits.

    Can I Refund A PlayStation Pre-Order?

Yes. If you ordered more than 14 days before release you can refund any time before the release date. If you ordered inside that window, the usual 14 days from purchase applies. Either way the main content must not be downloaded.

How Long Does A PlayStation Refund Take?

Sony quotes 30 to 60 days. It goes back to your original payment method where possible, and to your PSN wallet where not, which cannot be withdrawn as cash.

    Can I Refund In-Game Purchases On PS5?

Only consumables bought through the PlayStation Store, within 14 days, and only if you have not launched the game since buying them. Purchases made inside a game are not covered at all.

Why Is There No Request Refund Button?

Usually because the content has been downloaded or streamed, or the 14 days have passed. Contact PlayStation Support directly if you believe you qualify, especially where the product is faulty.

Can I Get A Refund On PS Plus?

Only your first payment, within 14 days of signing up, with any free trial counting toward those days, and the amount may be reduced in proportion to how much you used it. Renewals are not refundable.

    Are Wallet Top-Ups Refundable?

No. Wallet funds, online ID changes and voucher codes are all non-refundable unless the content is faulty.

    The Short Version

Fourteen days, and not downloaded. The download condition is what actually decides most requests, and it triggers without you playing a minute, so cancel any download in the queue before you file. Then use PlayStation Store, Transaction History, Request Refund.

Pre-orders are the generous case, refundable right up to release if you ordered early. Faulty content beats the normal limits. Expect 30 to 60 days for the money, take the original payment method over wallet credit, and do not open a chargeback while a request is running.
