To cancel Nitro, open User Settings, go to Subscriptions, and click Cancel on the Nitro banner. On mobile it is your avatar, the cogwheel, then Billing Settings and Manage Nitro.
Your subscription runs to the end of the current billing period, and the Manage Nitro screen will show you the expiry date once it is done.
If you bought Nitro inside the iOS app, none of that applies. Apple holds the subscription, and Discord states plainly that its support team cannot manage an iOS subscription. Android is the exception that works both ways: you can cancel in Discord or in Google Play.
Deleting your account is a separate action with its own trap, and it is the one worth reading before you click. Discord does not erase your messages when you delete an account. It anonymises them, and they stay in every server where you posted.

One thing that does not disappear: emoji you uploaded to a server you own belong to that server, not to your account, so they stay put when your Nitro lapses. What stops is your ability to use custom emoji across other servers.
Server Boosts: The 72-Hour Grace Period
This is the part that affects other people, not just you, so it is worth handling deliberately if you boost a server that matters.
When Nitro ends, your two included boosts are removed. The server you were boosting keeps its level perks for 72 hours, which gives someone else a window to pick up the slack before the server drops a tier.
Some things go immediately rather than after 72 hours: Server Tags and Enhanced Role Styles are disabled at once. A custom vanity invite link survives longer, and is released after 30 days, so a server that loses its boost level does not instantly lose its memorable invite URL.
Boost streaks are lost if boosts are not reapplied within that 72-hour window. If you are cancelling and someone else is taking over the boosting, tell them before you cancel rather than after.
Discord Nitro Refunds: Five Days, Once
Discord does refund Nitro, but the window is unusually short and the allowance is unusually strict.
- Five days from the purchase. Not 14, not 30. Requests go through Discord’s billing support form and are reviewed case by case.
- One time only, per category. Once you have had a Nitro refund, there will not be a second.
- Redeeming a promotional perk voids it. If you claimed something like a Nitro promotion through another service within five days of the renewal, you are not eligible.
- Gifts follow the same rules. A Nitro gift you claimed yourself is refundable and counts against your one-time limit. Unclaimed gifts are refundable within five days, on desktop, web and Android only.
- iOS purchases go through Apple. Discord cannot refund them.
Five days is short enough that an unwanted annual renewal is easy to miss. If you are on annual Nitro, the renewal email is worth actually opening.

Two warnings though: an active subscription keeps billing while an account is disabled, so cancel Nitro separately, and Discord may auto-delete accounts that have been disabled for two years or more.
How To Delete A Discord Account
- Cancel Nitro first if you have it, because deletion does not stop a subscription on its own.
- Transfer or delete any servers you own. Discord will not let you proceed while you are the owner of a server.
- Open User Settings, then My Account, and scroll to the bottom to the Account Removal section.
- Choose Disable Account or Delete Account.
- Enter your password, and your multi-factor code if you have MFA enabled, then confirm.
On mobile it is your avatar, the gear icon, then Account, scrolling to the same Delete or Disable options.
Your account then sits in a pending deletion state for 15 days. Logging back in during that window restores it. After 15 days it is irreversible.
What Happens To Your Messages
This is the most commonly misunderstood part of deleting a Discord account, and it matters if privacy is your reason for leaving.
Deleting your account does not delete your messages. Everything you posted stays exactly where you posted it, in every server and DM. What changes is the name attached to it: your identity is anonymised, so the messages show as coming from a deleted user rather than from you.
If you want specific messages gone, delete them yourself before you delete the account. Once the account is gone you no longer have any way to remove them, and asking a server admin to do it is the only remaining route.
