Short answer: sign in at amazon.com, open Account and Lists, then Memberships and Subscriptions, find Kindle Unlimited and choose Cancel Kindle Unlimited Subscription, then confirm on the final screen. Do it at least a day before your renewal date. Your borrowed books stay readable until the end of the period you already paid for, then they are returned automatically.
Kindle Unlimited is one of the simplest subscriptions to cancel and one of the easiest to keep paying for by accident. The cancel button is not in the Kindle reading app, the membership is easy to confuse with Prime Reading, and free or discounted trials roll into the full monthly price without much warning.
This guide covers every route: the browser, the Amazon Shopping app, a Kindle e-reader, trials and prepaid plans, what happens to the books you have borrowed, and when Amazon will give money back.
Almost every Kindle Unlimited membership is billed by Amazon itself, because the Kindle apps on iPhone and Android do not sell subscriptions. That means Apple and Google are usually not involved. Still, look at the charge on your card statement first, because a charge you cannot find in your account often sits on a different Amazon login.
| What your statement says | Who bills you | Where to cancel |
| Kindle Unltd, Kindle Svcs or AMZN Kindle, often with amzn.com/bill | Amazon directly | amazon.com, then Memberships and Subscriptions |
| AMZN Digital or Amazon Digital | Amazon, possibly Kindle Unlimited or another digital subscription | Memberships and Subscriptions, then match the amount and date |
| Amazon Prime or AMZN Prime | Prime, not Kindle Unlimited | Prime membership settings (see our Prime guide) |
| Audible | Audible, a separate subscription | Audible account settings |
| APPLE.COM/BILL or GOOGLE | Very unlikely to be Kindle Unlimited | Check your Apple or Google subscriptions for a different app |
| No charge, but you have Kindle Unlimited | A gift, a free trial or a device promotion | Memberships and Subscriptions, to stop it renewing |
In the US, Kindle Unlimited costs $11.99 a month in 2026. It is a separate subscription from Amazon Prime, so Prime members pay the same price. Amazon also sells prepaid plans that cover several months at once, and their prices move with promotions, so treat the figures below as typical rather than fixed and check the price shown on your own membership page.
| Plan | Typical US price | Effective monthly cost | What happens at the end |
| Monthly | $11.99 a month | $11.99 | Renews every month until cancelled |
| 6 month prepaid | Around $66 | About $11 | Usually rolls into monthly billing unless you turn renewal off |
| 12 month prepaid | Around $119 to $132 | About $10 to $11 | Usually rolls into monthly billing unless you turn renewal off |
| 24 month prepaid | Around $264 | About $11 | Usually rolls into monthly billing unless you turn renewal off |
| Free or discounted trial | $0, or a few dollars for 2 to 3 months on promotions | $0 to a few dollars | Converts to $11.99 a month automatically |
The membership lets you keep up to 20 Kindle Unlimited titles on loan at once, from a catalogue of millions of titles, including some magazines and a selection of audiobooks with Audible narration. If you want the audiobook side specifically, Audible is a different product with its own billing.
Kindle Unlimited renews on the same date each billing cycle, and the date is shown on your Memberships and Subscriptions page under the Kindle Unlimited entry. Cancelling stops the next renewal, not the current period. There is no early cancellation fee and no penalty for cancelling the day after you were billed.
If you are about to cancel because a charge just went through, cancel straight away and then read the refund section. A renewal you have not used yet is the one situation where Amazon is most likely to help.
This is the most reliable route and works for every Kindle Unlimited member billed by Amazon, including people who signed up on a Kindle or in the Amazon app.
The Amazon Shopping app can reach the same Memberships and Subscriptions page as the website, although the layout changes often and some versions simply open the web page inside the app.
If the option will not load in the app, switch to a phone browser and use the web steps above. Requesting the desktop site in your browser makes the menus easier to find.
This is where most people get stuck. The Kindle reading app on iPhone, iPad and Android has no cancel button for Kindle Unlimited, because Amazon does not sell the membership through the App Store or Google Play. That also means you will not find Kindle Unlimited in iPhone Settings under Subscriptions, or in the Play Store’s Payments and subscriptions list.
To cancel Kindle Unlimited on iPhone or Android, open Safari or Chrome, go to amazon.com, sign in and follow the web steps, or use the Amazon Shopping app route. If you do see an Amazon reading subscription in your Apple or Google list, it is a different product, such as Audible or Amazon Kids+, and you cancel that one where it is listed.
Kindle e-readers let you manage the membership from the device, although the menus vary between models and software versions.
If your Kindle does not show the option, use a computer or phone browser instead. The cancellation applies to the whole account, so cancelling once covers every Kindle and app signed in to it.
The standard offer is a 30 day free trial, and Amazon regularly runs longer or discounted versions, such as two or three months free or a few months for a small fee, especially around Prime Day and Black Friday or with a new Kindle. Every one of them converts to the full monthly price automatically at the end.
Cancel a trial with exactly the same steps as a paid membership. In most cases you keep access until the trial end date even after you cancel, so it is safe to cancel the same day you sign up if you only want the free period. Check the confirmation screen to see your end date, and set a reminder for a few days before it if you would rather decide later.
One catch: promotional trials and discounted months are usually limited to new or returning members who have not had Kindle Unlimited recently. Cancelling and rejoining straight away will normally put you back on the full price.
Prepaid plans cover 6, 12 or 24 months up front. Amazon’s offer terms have generally said the standard monthly price applies automatically after the prepaid term until you cancel, so a prepaid plan is not a guarantee that billing stops on its own. To prevent that, cancel through Memberships and Subscriptions at any point during the prepaid term. Your access continues to the end of the period you paid for.
If you buy a prepaid plan while already on monthly billing, Amazon has suspended the monthly renewals during the prepaid period and resumed them afterwards. That is the most common reason people see a surprise $11.99 charge a year or two after “paying for the year”.
Gifted memberships are paid by the person who sent them. If you received one, check the Kindle Unlimited entry for a renewal date: if a card of yours is attached, cancelling before the gift ends stops you being billed afterwards.
A lot of searches for “is Kindle Unlimited free with Prime” come from people who are paying for both without realising it. They are three different things, and cancelling one does not touch the others.
| Kindle Unlimited | Prime Reading | Amazon Prime | |
| Price | $11.99 a month on top of anything else | Included with Prime at no extra cost | $14.99 a month or $139 a year |
| Catalogue | Millions of titles | A rotating selection of around a thousand or more titles | Shipping, video, music and more, plus Prime Reading |
| Titles on loan at once | Up to 20 | Up to 10 | Not applicable |
| Billed separately | Yes | No | Yes |
| Where to cancel | Memberships and Subscriptions, Kindle Unlimited | Cannot be cancelled on its own; it ends with Prime | Prime membership settings |
So no, Kindle Unlimited is not included with Prime. If you cancel Kindle Unlimited, Prime and Prime Reading carry on, and Prime Reading may already cover the books you read most. If you want to drop Prime itself, follow our guide on how to cancel Amazon Prime, and remember that ending Prime does not end Kindle Unlimited: you have to cancel each one.
Cancelling is not instant. Here is what happens and when:
| Item | After you cancel |
| Books borrowed through Kindle Unlimited | Readable until the membership end date, then returned automatically and removed from your devices |
| Audiobooks borrowed through Kindle Unlimited | Removed at the end date along with the ebooks |
| Books you bought, even at a discount | Stay in your library permanently |
| Free books and Prime Reading loans | Unaffected, as long as you still have Prime for Prime Reading |
| Highlights, notes and reading position | Usually kept in your Amazon account and restored if you borrow or buy the book again, though this is not guaranteed |
| Your Amazon account | Stays open with all purchases and history |
Some people searching for a way out of Kindle Unlimited land on Amazon’s account closure page. Closing the account is permanent and far bigger than most people need.
| Cancel Kindle Unlimited | Close Amazon account | |
| Stops the Kindle Unlimited charge | Yes | Yes |
| Keeps Kindle books you bought | Yes | No, the whole library is lost |
| Keeps Prime, Audible and other services | Yes | No |
| Keeps order history and gift card balance | Yes | No |
| Reversible | Yes, rejoin any time | No |
| Where to do it | Memberships and Subscriptions | Amazon’s account closure request in Help |
For almost everyone, cancelling the membership is the right move. Only close the account if you genuinely want to leave Amazon altogether, and download anything you need first.
Kindle Unlimited does not prorate. If you cancel mid-cycle you keep access to the end of the period, and you do not get money back for the unused days. There is no refund button in the cancellation flow. Refunds happen case by case through Amazon customer service, and these are the situations where they are most likely:
Contact Amazon through the Help section of the website or app, choose the Kindle Unlimited or digital subscription option, and have the charge date and amount ready. Keep a bank chargeback as a last resort: disputing Amazon charges can lead to restrictions on the account that holds your Kindle library.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
| Kindle Unlimited still shows a renewal date | You stopped before the final confirmation | Repeat the web steps and confirm until an end date appears |
| No cancel button in the Kindle app | The reading app does not manage subscriptions | Use a browser or the Amazon Shopping app |
| Not in iPhone or Google Play subscriptions | Amazon bills Kindle Unlimited directly | Cancel on amazon.com instead |
| Charged after the free trial | The trial converted to $11.99 a month | Cancel now and ask Amazon about the charge if nothing was borrowed |
| Charged after a prepaid year | The prepaid plan rolled into monthly billing | Cancel and ask about the most recent charge |
| Charged but no membership on your account | A second Amazon account, often an old email | Sign in to each account and check Memberships and Subscriptions |
| Cancelled Prime but still paying for Kindle Unlimited | They are separate subscriptions | Cancel Kindle Unlimited on its own |
If none of these explains the charge, contact Amazon customer service with the date and amount from your statement.
It depends on what you read, not how much. Kindle Unlimited is strong for genre fiction, especially romance, fantasy, thrillers and series from independent authors, and many readers get through several of those a month. It is weak for new releases from the big publishers, which are rarely in the catalogue.
A quick test: look at the last five Kindle books you read and check whether each one carries the Kindle Unlimited badge. If two or three a month would otherwise cost you $4 to $6 each, $11.99 is good value. If most of your reading is new bestsellers, Prime Reading or a library app like Libby is the cheaper option. And if you read in bursts, it is fine to cancel now and rejoin when a promotional offer comes round.
On amazon.com, go to Account and Lists, then Memberships and Subscriptions, select Kindle Unlimited and choose Cancel Kindle Unlimited Subscription, then confirm on the final screen.
$11.99 a month in the US in 2026, with prepaid 6, 12 and 24 month plans that can work out slightly cheaper.
No. Prime includes Prime Reading, a smaller rotating catalogue. Kindle Unlimited is a separate paid subscription, even for Prime members.
Not in the Kindle app or iPhone Settings. Open amazon.com in Safari, or use the Amazon Shopping app, and go to Memberships and Subscriptions.
You lose the borrowed ones when the membership ends, not when you cancel. Books you bought stay in your library.
Go to Manage Content and Devices on amazon.com and choose Return for Kindle Unlimited, or long-press the cover on a Kindle and select Return. You only need to do this to free a slot; cancelling returns everything automatically at the end date.
No, as long as you cancel before the trial end date. You usually keep access until that date.
There is no automatic refund or proration. Amazon customer service may refund a recent renewal you have not used, so ask promptly.
No. They are billed separately, so you must cancel each one on its own.
Yes, at any time. Amazon often sends returning members discounted offers, but a fresh free trial is not guaranteed.
