Short answer: To cancel a Preply subscription, log in at preply.com in a web browser, go to Settings > Subscriptions, click the three dots next to your tutor and choose Cancel Subscription. Do it at least one day before your next billing date, because cancelling on the billing date does not stop that charge. The catch: you cannot cancel in the Preply app, and any lessons you have not booked expire when your current 28-day cycle ends.
If you are searching for how to cancel Preply subscription renewals, know this first: Preply does not sell one membership. Each subscription is a plan with one tutor that renews every 28 days, so you cancel tutor by tutor, and you can also pause, downgrade or switch tutors instead. This guide covers every option using Preply’s own help center and terms, plus refunds and what Preply costs. For a wider cleanup of recurring charges, see our guide on how to cancel subscriptions online.
| Where you signed up or what your statement says | Who bills you | Where to cancel |
|---|---|---|
| Preply website (charge shows Preply) | Preply | preply.com Settings > Subscriptions |
| Preply app on iPhone or Android, paid by card, PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay | Preply (charged to your saved payment method) | preply.com in a browser; the app cannot cancel |
| Two or more tutors (several Preply charges) | Preply, one subscription per tutor | Cancel each tutor separately under Subscriptions |
| Renewal is less than 24 hours away | Preply | Preply customer support chat |
You pay for lessons with one tutor, not for platform access. Per Preply’s subscription article:
Preply’s terms add that if a renewal payment fails, Preply may keep retrying for up to 30 days.
There is no single Preply price. Your cost comes down to two numbers:
Preply’s own example: at a rate of €10 per lesson, the minimum 4-lesson plan costs €40 per 28-day cycle. You can split the same time into 8 lessons of 25 minutes for the same price.
The only reliable figure for your plan is the one in your Subscriptions settings and checkout summary.
Cancellation works only in a web browser, on a computer or on your phone’s browser. There is no cancellation fee and no lock-in. These steps follow Preply’s cancellation article:
Preply then emails you a confirmation, and that tutor shows a Subscription cancelled status in your settings. Keep the email.
Cancelling one tutor vs all of them: cancelling stops renewals for that tutor’s plan only. Subscriptions with other tutors keep renewing, so repeat the steps for every tutor listed under Subscriptions if you want to stop Preply completely.
Preply’s help center is clear that cancellation is not available in the app. If you use Preply on an iPhone, iPad or Android phone:
Preply’s help center does not describe App Store or Google Play billing. Its payment methods are cards, PayPal, and Apple Pay or Google Pay in the app, all paid to Preply directly. If unsure, check Apple’s subscriptions page or Google Play subscriptions; if Preply is not listed there, Preply bills you.
Inside the final 24 hours before your billing date, the cancel option in Settings is not available. Preply says to contact support before the charge processes:
If you only need a short break, pausing pushes your next renewal back by up to 20 days instead of ending the plan. Unlike cancelling, pausing works in the app too. Per Preply’s pause article:
You can pause once per cycle and cannot extend it, even through support. You can still take your remaining lessons, which stay valid until the new date. To restart early, use Renew subscription now once your lessons are scheduled. For a longer break, Preply suggests cancelling and later resubscribing to the same tutor at your original price.
Downgrade your plan. Go to Settings > Subscriptions, click the three dots, choose Change your plan (Change plan in the app), then Downgrade plan. A downgrade starts on your next billing date. If it is greyed out, you are on the 4-lesson minimum.
Switch tutors. Per Preply’s transfer article, go to Balance (tap Schedule first in the app), then More actions > Switch to a new tutor. Your remaining lessons convert to Preply Credits that pay for the new tutor’s plan. A pricier tutor means fewer lessons or paying the difference; leftover Credits cannot be withdrawn as cash. You must have had a trial or subscription with the new tutor first.
Cancelling one lesson is different from cancelling the subscription. The key number is 12 hours before the lesson start time shown in your account:
To cancel on the web:
In the app, tap Schedule, select the lesson and tap Cancel lesson or Reschedule. The 12-hour rule applies to trial lessons too.
Preply’s help center says to cancel at least one day before your billing date, and its terms say at least one day before the end of the billing cycle. Your exact billing date is shown in your Settings.
After you cancel, per Preply’s article on cancelling:
Cancelling does not delete your account and does not issue a refund on its own.
Preply refunds are possible but not automatic. According to Preply’s refund article and its Subscription Services Terms:
You cannot request a refund from your settings. Use the ? chat icon on the Preply homepage, go to Profile > Help > Customer support in the app, or email support@preply.com. Be careful with chargebacks: the Refund and Payment Policy says Preply may suspend your accounts if you file one.
| Option | What it does | Your lessons | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancel subscription | Stops renewals for one tutor; web only | Usable until the cycle ends; unbooked ones then expire | Stopping Preply or one tutor |
| Pause | Moves renewal back 1 to 20 days, once per cycle | Stay valid until the new renewal date | A short break, travel or exams |
| Downgrade plan | Fewer lessons from the next billing date | Current lessons kept this cycle | Cutting your Preply cost |
| Switch tutor | Converts remaining lessons to Credits for a new tutor | Moved as Credits, no cash value | A tutor who is not the right fit |
| Delete account | Removes your account via preply.com/settings | Any balance expires when the account is deleted | Leaving Preply for good, after cancelling |
Preply’s privacy policy says you can delete your entire account from your account Settings page at preply.com/settings, or by emailing support@preply.com, and that it will respond to deletion requests within 30 days. Cancel every subscription and use or settle your balance first.
| Problem | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No cancel option in the app | Preply does not allow cancelling in the app | Log in at preply.com in a browser and use Settings > Subscriptions |
| Cancel option missing in Settings | Your renewal is less than 24 hours away | Contact support through the ? chat icon before the charge |
| Still charged after cancelling | You have another tutor’s subscription, or cancelled on the billing date | Check every tutor under Subscriptions, then ask support about a refund within 28 days |
| Lessons vanished at renewal | Unscheduled lessons expire at the end of each 28-day cycle | Book lessons before renewal; booked lessons are protected |
| Lesson not returned to balance | You cancelled less than 12 hours before it started | Message your tutor; only a tutor reschedule changes the outcome |
| Cannot end a pause early | Renew now unlocks only after all current lessons are scheduled | Schedule your remaining lessons, then choose Renew subscription now |
| Refund went to a closed card | Preply returns refunds to the original method | Contact your card issuer or bank to claim the funds |
Keep your cancellation email, a screenshot showing Subscription cancelled and your support chat history. If Preply keeps billing you after a confirmed cancellation, ask your card issuer about disputing the charge or blocking the merchant as a backstop (knowing Preply may suspend accounts over chargebacks), and report it to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov or your state attorney general.
The FTC’s “click to cancel” rule was vacated by the Eighth Circuit in July 2025, but the Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act (ROSCA) still applies, and California and other states have automatic renewal laws. This is general information, not legal advice.
Log in at preply.com in a browser, go to Settings, Subscriptions, click the three dots next to your tutor and choose Cancel Subscription. Confirm through the final screen and keep the confirmation email.
No. Preply says cancellation is only available in a web browser, so open preply.com on your phone or computer and cancel from Settings.
At least one day before your billing date. Cancelling on the billing date does not stop that charge, and within 24 hours you have to contact support.
Go to Settings, Subscriptions, click the three dots next to your tutor and choose the pause option, then pick a new renewal date up to 20 days later. You can pause once per billing cycle.
Possibly. Preply may refund a charge if you have not used any lessons from that cycle and you ask within 28 days; contact support through the ? chat icon or support@preply.com.
You can use them until the current 28-day cycle ends. Lessons you have not booked by then expire and are not refunded automatically.
It depends on your tutor’s rate and your plan size. The minimum plan is 4 lessons every 28 days, so at Preply’s example rate of €10 a lesson that is €40 per cycle.
No. Preply says trial lessons are paid, though it offers up to 2 free replacement trials with a different tutor if one does not work out.
Cancel your subscriptions first, then delete the account from Settings. Preply’s terms say any balance expires when the account is deleted.
