Short answer: Most Duolingo subscriptions are bought inside the app, so to cancel Super, Max or a Family plan you usually cancel through Apple (Settings, your name, Subscriptions) or Google Play (Subscriptions), not inside Duolingo. If you subscribed on duolingo.com, cancel from your Duolingo account settings on the website. Cancel before the renewal date, because Apple charges renewals within the 24 hours before the current period ends, and deleting the app or your Duolingo account does not stop billing on its own.
If you are looking up how to cancel Duolingo, the first question to answer is who actually charges you. Duolingo sells Super Duolingo, Duolingo Max and Family versions of both, but the company that takes your money depends on where you tapped Subscribe: the App Store, Google Play or the Duolingo website. This guide walks through each route, explains how renewals and free trials work, covers refunds through Apple and Google, and makes the difference between canceling a subscription and deleting your account clear, so you do not lose your streak and progress by accident. For a broader cleanup, see our guide on how to cancel subscriptions online.
| Where you signed up or what your statement says | Who bills you | Where to cancel |
|---|---|---|
| APPLE.COM/BILL, or you subscribed in the Duolingo app on an iPhone or iPad | Apple | Settings, then your name, then Subscriptions |
| A Google Play charge, or you subscribed in the Duolingo app on Android | Google Play | Google Play, then Subscriptions |
| A charge from Duolingo after subscribing on duolingo.com in a browser | Duolingo | Your account settings on duolingo.com |
| You joined someone else’s Family plan | The family manager’s account | Only the manager can cancel; ask them to remove you |
| A gifted year of Super | Whoever bought the gift | Nothing to cancel unless you added your own payment method |
Duolingo is free to use, and the paid tiers add extras on top. Knowing which one you have helps you find it in your subscription list:
Prices vary by country, platform and billing period, and the App Store listing for Duolingo shows several different Super price points. Use the renewal price shown in your Apple, Google or Duolingo account rather than any headline number.
Apps for language learning often sit alongside reading and audio subscriptions. If you are trimming those too, see our guides to canceling Audible and canceling Kindle Unlimited.
Before you cancel, check three things. First, find the original receipt: search your email for “Duolingo” together with “receipt from Apple”, “Google Play” or “Duolingo” to see which company processed the payment and which email or Apple Account it went to. Second, note the renewal date shown in that store or account, because that is your real deadline. Third, if you share a Family plan, decide whether you are the manager who pays or a member who was invited, since only the manager can end the plan. Five minutes spent on these checks avoids the most common mistake, which is canceling in the wrong place and getting charged again anyway.
If you subscribed in the Duolingo app on an Apple device, Apple bills you, and Duolingo’s App Store listing says auto-renewal is managed in your App Store settings. Use Apple’s steps from its cancel a subscription page. This works for Super, Max and Family plans alike.
On a Mac: open the App Store, click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, click your name again, click Subscriptions, choose Duolingo and click Cancel Subscription.
If you do not see a Cancel button, or there is an expiration message in red, Apple says the subscription is already canceled. If Duolingo does not appear in the list at all, you are probably signed in with a different Apple Account, or Google or Duolingo bills you instead.
Subscriptions started in the Duolingo app on Android are billed through Google Play. Google’s steps from its cancel a subscription on Google Play page:
Google says plainly that uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription. After you cancel, you keep access for the time you already paid for, and the next renewal charge is skipped.
If you subscribed on duolingo.com in a browser, Duolingo bills you directly and Apple or Google will not show the subscription. In that case:
Duolingo keeps its current instructions in the Help Center article How do I cancel my Super Duolingo subscription?, which is worth opening if the menu wording on your screen differs. If you are not sure which platform you used, look for the original receipt: a receipt from Apple or Google means you must cancel there, even if you mostly use Duolingo on a computer.
A Duolingo Family plan, whether Super Family or Max Family, is paid for by one person: the family manager. Only the manager can cancel the plan, and they cancel it in the same place it was bought (Apple, Google Play or duolingo.com), using the steps above.
If you are a member rather than the manager, canceling is not something you can do for the group. Ask the manager to remove you from the plan. Your own Duolingo account, courses and progress stay with you either way, because each member has a separate account. Duolingo describes the manager’s controls as living in the Super dashboard, under the Super icon in the app or on the profile page on the website.
Duolingo’s App Store and Google Play listings currently advertise a 14-day free trial of Super Duolingo. A trial turns into a paid plan automatically if you do not cancel.
Duolingo’s App Store listing also notes that any unused part of a free trial is forfeited when you buy a subscription, so if you upgrade during the trial you lose the remaining free days.
Renewal timing. Duolingo’s App Store listing says payment is charged to your Apple account and renewal is charged within 24 hours before the end of the current period. That means canceling on the renewal date itself is often too late. Cancel at least a day or two before the date shown in your subscription settings.
Access after canceling. When you cancel through Apple or Google, you keep Super or Max features until the end of the period you already paid for. After that, your account returns to the free version of Duolingo.
Your progress. Canceling a subscription does not delete your account. Your courses, XP and streak stay on your free account. What you lose are the paid perks, such as an ad-free experience, unlimited hearts or energy, Streak Repair and the Max AI features.
Gems and other in-app purchases. Gems are separate one-time purchases, not part of the subscription, and canceling does not refund them.
For most subscribers, the refund decision belongs to the company that billed you.
When you ask for a refund, be specific. Give the date and amount of the charge, say whether it was a trial that converted or a renewal you did not expect, and mention that you have already canceled. If the charge came from Apple and you cannot find it, Apple suggests searching your email for “receipt from Apple” or “invoice from Apple” to find the matching Apple Account, and family organizers can view shared purchases from the same page.
Do not count on a refund just because you canceled. Canceling stops the next charge; a refund for the current charge is a separate request that Apple, Google or Duolingo decides.
| Option | What it does | Your progress | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancel subscription | Stops the next renewal; paid features last until the period ends | Kept on your free account | You want to keep learning for free |
| Switch from Max to Super | Keeps a cheaper paid tier without the Max AI features, where offered in your plan options | Kept | You still want no ads and unlimited hearts or energy |
| Be removed from a Family plan | The manager removes you from their plan | Kept on your own account | Members who no longer want to share |
| Delete your Duolingo account | Removes the account and its learning history | Lost | You are leaving Duolingo for good |
Deleting your Duolingo account and canceling your subscription are two separate actions. If Apple or Google bills you, deleting the Duolingo account does not cancel the App Store or Google Play subscription, so cancel there first and only then delete the account if you want your data gone.
| Problem | Why it happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Duolingo is not in your iPhone Subscriptions list | You subscribed with another Apple Account, on Android, or on the website | Search your email for the receipt to see who billed you, then cancel there |
| No cancel option in the Duolingo website settings | The subscription is billed by Apple or Google | Cancel in Apple Subscriptions or Google Play Subscriptions |
| Charged after deleting the app | Uninstalling never cancels a subscription | Cancel through Apple or Google Play and request a refund if eligible |
| Charged the day you canceled | Apple charges renewals within 24 hours before the period ends | Request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com and cancel earlier next time |
| You cannot cancel a Family plan | You are a member, not the manager | Ask the manager to cancel or to remove you |
| Trial turned into an annual charge | Trials auto-convert to the plan you selected | Cancel immediately and request a refund from whoever billed you |
If you cannot find a way to cancel and support does not resolve it, keep a written record: screenshots of your subscription page, receipts, emails and dates. As a backstop, ask your card issuer to block future charges, though that does not cancel the subscription itself. You can also report the problem to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov or your state attorney general.
The FTC’s click-to-cancel rule was vacated by the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals in July 2025, so it is not in force. The federal Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act (ROSCA) still covers online subscriptions, and California and several other states have automatic renewal laws requiring an easy way to cancel. This is general information, not legal advice.
Cancel where you subscribed. On iPhone, go to Settings, your name, Subscriptions; on Android, go to Google Play Subscriptions; if you paid on duolingo.com, cancel in your account settings on the website.
Super Duolingo is canceled through Apple, Google Play or the Duolingo website, depending on where you bought it. Your account switches to the free version when the paid period ends.
Duolingo Max is canceled the same way as Super, in the subscription settings of whichever store or site billed you. If you only want to drop the AI features, check whether your subscription settings offer Super instead.
The app can point you to your subscription, but if Apple or Google bills you, the cancellation itself happens in their subscription settings. Deleting the app does not cancel anything.
No. Canceling keeps your account, courses and streak; you only lose paid perks such as monthly Streak Repair. Deleting your account is what removes your progress.
Only the family manager can cancel, using the store or website that billed the plan. Members can ask the manager to remove them, and keep their own accounts.
For App Store purchases, request a refund from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. For Google Play purchases, use Google’s refund process, and for website purchases, start with Duolingo’s Help Center refund article.
Cancel in the same place you started the trial, before it ends. On Apple, cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends.
Not if Apple or Google bills you. Cancel the subscription in their settings first, then delete the Duolingo account if you want your data removed.
Yes. Duolingo renamed Duolingo Plus to Super Duolingo in 2022, so a Plus subscription is canceled the same way as Super.
