How To Cancel A Preply Subscription In 2026: Pause And Refunds

Short answer: To cancel a Preply subscription, log in at preply.com in a web browser, go to Settings > Subscriptions, click the three dots next to your tutor and choose Cancel Subscription. Do it at least one day before your next billing date, because cancelling on the billing date does not stop that charge. The catch: you cannot cancel in the Preply app, and any lessons you have not booked expire when your current 28-day cycle ends.

If you are searching for how to cancel Preply subscription renewals, know this first: Preply does not sell one membership. Each subscription is a plan with one tutor that renews every 28 days, so you cancel tutor by tutor, and you can also pause, downgrade or switch tutors instead. This guide covers every option using Preply’s own help center and terms, plus refunds and what Preply costs. For a wider cleanup of recurring charges, see our guide on how to cancel subscriptions online.

    How A Preply Subscription Works

You pay for lessons with one tutor, not for platform access. Per Preply’s subscription article:

    • One tutor per subscription. Two tutors means two subscriptions, each with its own billing date.
    • 28-day cycles. You are charged automatically for a fixed number of lessons every 28 days, not on the same calendar date each month. Preply’s own example: a first payment on 1 January renews on 29 January, then 26 February.
    • Use it or lose it. Lessons you have not scheduled by the renewal date expire. Lessons you already booked are protected and can take place after renewal.
    • No single lessons. Apart from a trial lesson with a new tutor and mid-cycle top-ups, Preply does not sell standalone lessons.

Preply’s terms add that if a renewal payment fails, Preply may keep retrying for up to 30 days.

    Preply Cost: How Pricing Works

There is no single Preply price. Your cost comes down to two numbers:

    1. Your tutor’s lesson rate. Each tutor sets their own rate. Your rate is locked when you subscribe; if the tutor raises it, Preply asks you to confirm first.
    2. Your plan size. A plan is the number of lessons you get every 28 days. The minimum plan is 4 lessons every 4 weeks, which works out to roughly one lesson a week. One lesson equals 50 minutes.

Preply’s own example: at a rate of €10 per lesson, the minimum 4-lesson plan costs €40 per 28-day cycle. You can split the same time into 8 lessons of 25 minutes for the same price.

    • Trial lessons are paid. They run 25 or 50 minutes, one per tutor, and need no subscription.
    • Extra lessons. Preply’s terms allow up to 8 lessons per top-up, twice per cycle, and extra lessons carry over for up to two cycles.
    • Currency and taxes. Payments are in USD, EUR or GBP depending on location, and taxes and transaction fees are charged with the subscription fee. PayPal is USD only.
    • Commission. Preply’s tutor help article says the platform’s commission is paid by tutors, out of their lesson earnings.

The only reliable figure for your plan is the one in your Subscriptions settings and checkout summary.

How To Cancel Preply Subscription On The Web

Cancellation works only in a web browser, on a computer or on your phone’s browser. There is no cancellation fee and no lock-in. These steps follow Preply’s cancellation article:

    1. Go to preply.com and log in.
    2. Open Settings from your dashboard (or go straight to your subscription settings).
    3. Select Subscriptions.
    4. Click the three dots next to the tutor whose subscription you want to end.
    5. Choose Cancel Subscription.
    6. If Preply offers alternatives such as pausing or a smaller plan, select Proceed with cancellation.
    7. Pick a reason and click Continue Cancellation.
    8. On the final screen, click Cancel Subscription to confirm.

Preply then emails you a confirmation, and that tutor shows a Subscription cancelled status in your settings. Keep the email.

Cancelling one tutor vs all of them: cancelling stops renewals for that tutor’s plan only. Subscriptions with other tutors keep renewing, so repeat the steps for every tutor listed under Subscriptions if you want to stop Preply completely.

Cancelling From The Preply App, iPhone Or Android

Preply’s help center is clear that cancellation is not available in the app. If you use Preply on an iPhone, iPad or Android phone:

    1. Open any browser on your phone or computer and go to preply.com.
    2. Log in with the same account you use in the app.
    3. Go to Settings > Subscriptions and follow the web steps above.

Preply’s help center does not describe App Store or Google Play billing. Its payment methods are cards, PayPal, and Apple Pay or Google Pay in the app, all paid to Preply directly. If unsure, check Apple’s subscriptions page or Google Play subscriptions; if Preply is not listed there, Preply bills you.

Cancelling Less Than 24 Hours Before Renewal

Inside the final 24 hours before your billing date, the cancel option in Settings is not available. Preply says to contact support before the charge processes:

    1. On the web, open the Preply homepage and click the ? chat icon.
    2. In the app, go to Profile > Help > Customer support.
    3. Say which tutor’s subscription you want cancelled and ask for written confirmation.

How To Pause Preply Subscription Renewals

If you only need a short break, pausing pushes your next renewal back by up to 20 days instead of ending the plan. Unlike cancelling, pausing works in the app too. Per Preply’s pause article:

    1. Web: go to Settings > Subscriptions, click the three dots next to your tutor and choose the pause option.
    2. App: open your profile, tap More settings, swipe to Subscription, tap the three dots next to your tutor and choose the pause option.
    3. Pick a new renewal date on the calendar, 1 to 20 days after your current one. Preply says this choice is final.
    4. Choose to keep your current plan and pause, or switch to a smaller plan and pause.

You can pause once per cycle and cannot extend it, even through support. You can still take your remaining lessons, which stay valid until the new date. To restart early, use Renew subscription now once your lessons are scheduled. For a longer break, Preply suggests cancelling and later resubscribing to the same tutor at your original price.

Change Your Plan Or Tutor Instead

Downgrade your plan. Go to Settings > Subscriptions, click the three dots, choose Change your plan (Change plan in the app), then Downgrade plan. A downgrade starts on your next billing date. If it is greyed out, you are on the 4-lesson minimum.

Switch tutors. Per Preply’s transfer article, go to Balance (tap Schedule first in the app), then More actions > Switch to a new tutor. Your remaining lessons convert to Preply Credits that pay for the new tutor’s plan. A pricier tutor means fewer lessons or paying the difference; leftover Credits cannot be withdrawn as cash. You must have had a trial or subscription with the new tutor first.

Cancel Or Reschedule A Single Lesson

Cancelling one lesson is different from cancelling the subscription. The key number is 12 hours before the lesson start time shown in your account:

    • More than 12 hours ahead: the lesson returns to your balance with that tutor, and you can reschedule it if the tutor has open slots.
    • Less than 12 hours ahead: the lesson is marked Cancelled and Paid, it does not return to your balance, and the tutor is paid. You cannot reschedule it in the system, but you can message your tutor and ask them to move it.

    To cancel on the web:

    1. Go to My lessons and find the lesson.
    2. Click the three dots and select Cancel (or Reschedule).
    3. Choose a reason, write a short note to your tutor and confirm.

In the app, tap Schedule, select the lesson and tap Cancel lesson or Reschedule. The 12-hour rule applies to trial lessons too.

Deadlines And What Happens After You Cancel

Preply’s help center says to cancel at least one day before your billing date, and its terms say at least one day before the end of the billing cycle. Your exact billing date is shown in your Settings.

After you cancel, per Preply’s article on cancelling:

    • You keep the lessons you already paid for until the current 28-day cycle ends, and the cancellation flow prompts you to schedule them.
    • Lessons booked before you cancelled still take place.
    • Unbooked lessons expire at the end of the cycle and cannot be recovered.
    • You can resubscribe to the same tutor anytime. Your lesson history and progress notes stay accessible, but expired lessons are not reinstated.

Cancelling does not delete your account and does not issue a refund on its own.

    Preply Refund Policy

Preply refunds are possible but not automatic. According to Preply’s refund article and its Subscription Services Terms:

    • Subscription charges: Preply may refund a charge if you cancel and have not used any lessons from that billing cycle. Request it within 28 days of the charge. Each request is reviewed individually.
    • Partial periods: the terms say Preply does not refund partial subscription periods.
    • Where the money goes: the help center says refunds go back to the original payment method, even if that card is no longer active (then you need your bank’s help). Preply’s Refund and Payment Policy adds that Preply may offer Preply credit instead, but you can always choose the original payment method.
    • Timeframe: approved refunds can take up to 30 days to appear, depending on your bank.
    • Fees: the Refund and Payment Policy says service fees and taxes are non-refundable, and Preply does not cover bank or payment processor fees.
    • Trial lessons: if a trial with a tutor did not suit you, Preply offers up to 2 free replacement trials per account with a different tutor. Its terms also allow requesting a refund instead for an unsatisfactory trial or one that did not take place.

You cannot request a refund from your settings. Use the ? chat icon on the Preply homepage, go to Profile > Help > Customer support in the app, or email support@preply.com. Be careful with chargebacks: the Refund and Payment Policy says Preply may suspend your accounts if you file one.

Cancel Vs Pause Vs Delete Account

Option What it does Your lessons Best for
Cancel subscription Stops renewals for one tutor; web only Usable until the cycle ends; unbooked ones then expire Stopping Preply or one tutor
Pause Moves renewal back 1 to 20 days, once per cycle Stay valid until the new renewal date A short break, travel or exams
Downgrade plan Fewer lessons from the next billing date Current lessons kept this cycle Cutting your Preply cost
Switch tutor Converts remaining lessons to Credits for a new tutor Moved as Credits, no cash value A tutor who is not the right fit
Delete account Removes your account via preply.com/settings Any balance expires when the account is deleted Leaving Preply for good, after cancelling

Preply’s privacy policy says you can delete your entire account from your account Settings page at preply.com/settings, or by emailing support@preply.com, and that it will respond to deletion requests within 30 days. Cancel every subscription and use or settle your balance first.

Refund went to a closed card Preply returns refunds to the original method Contact your card issuer or bank to claim the funds

    If Preply Keeps Charging You

Keep your cancellation email, a screenshot showing Subscription cancelled and your support chat history. If Preply keeps billing you after a confirmed cancellation, ask your card issuer about disputing the charge or blocking the merchant as a backstop (knowing Preply may suspend accounts over chargebacks), and report it to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov or your state attorney general.

The FTC’s “click to cancel” rule was vacated by the Eighth Circuit in July 2025, but the Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act (ROSCA) still applies, and California and other states have automatic renewal laws. This is general information, not legal advice.
