How To Cancel Chegg In 2026: Web, App Store And Refunds

Short answer: sign in at chegg.com on a computer or mobile browser, click My Account, then Orders, scroll to Subscriptions, choose your plan and click Cancel Subscription, then work through every confirmation screen until Chegg shows that the plan will end. Do it before your next renewal date, ideally a day or two early. If there is no Cancel option, Apple or Google is billing you and you cancel in the App Store or Google Play instead.

Chegg is one of those subscriptions people sign up for in a panic the night before an exam and then forget about for a whole semester. Cancelling Chegg Study or Chegg Study Pack takes a few minutes, but the app does not always let you do it, retention offers sit between you and the final button, and textbook rentals have nothing to do with the subscription at all.

This guide covers every route: cancelling on the Chegg website, ending a plan that Apple or Google bills, the pause option, the free trial, what happens to your access afterwards, the difference between cancelling and deleting your account, and when a Chegg refund is realistic.

First, Check Who Is Billing You

Where you cancel depends on where you signed up. Check the charge on your bank or card statement before you do anything else, because Chegg cannot cancel a plan that an app store controls.

How Much Chegg Costs In 2026

Chegg now sells two main study subscriptions in the US. Chegg Study covers homework and textbook solutions, and Chegg Study Pack adds quiz and exam help, expert proofreading, plagiarism detection and math help on top. Both are billed monthly by default and renew automatically until you cancel.

    PlanUS priceWhat it includesRenews
Chegg Study$15.95 a monthHomework and textbook solutionsEvery month until cancelled
Chegg Study Pack$19.95 a monthSolutions plus quiz and exam help, proofreading, plagiarism checks and math helpEvery month until cancelled
Free trial or promo$0 or a reduced first periodUsually the same features as the paid planConverts to the full price automatically
App store subscriptionSet by Apple or GoogleSame plans, bought in the Chegg appManaged in the app store, not by Chegg

Chegg changes plan names, bundles and promotional pricing often, and older add-ons such as Chegg Writing and Chegg Math Solver have been folded into the Study Pack. Prices can also differ inside the iPhone and Android apps and outside the US. The amount shown in My Account, under Orders, is the one that actually renews, so treat that as the real figure.

When To Cancel So You Are Not Charged Again

Chegg’s terms say subscriptions renew automatically at the same or then-current rate, and your payment method is charged on each renewal date until you cancel. Cancelling stops future charges, and you keep access until the end of the period you already paid for.

    • Find your renewal date first. It appears next to the plan in My Account, under Orders.
    • Cancel at least a day before it. Renewals are processed on the renewal date itself, and time zones and payment processing can bring the charge forward by a few hours. Cancelling on the morning of renewal is a gamble.
    • There is no benefit to waiting. Because access continues to the end of the paid period, cancelling the day after you finish your exams costs you nothing.

The safest habit is to cancel as soon as the semester’s last assignment is in, then let the access run out on its own.

How To Cancel Chegg On The Website

This is the route for anyone Chegg bills directly, which is most subscribers. It works in any desktop browser and in a phone browser, and it is the most reliable way to cancel a Chegg subscription.

    1. Sign in at chegg.com. Use the same email you signed up with. If you have more than one Chegg login, start with the one the receipts went to.
    2. Open My Account. Click your profile icon in the top right corner and choose My Account.
    3. Click Orders. This tab lists your subscriptions, past payments and any textbook orders.
    4. Scroll to Subscriptions. Each active plan, such as Chegg Study or Chegg Study Pack, is listed with its renewal date.
    5. Click Cancel Subscription next to the plan you want to end.
    6. Get past the retention screens. Chegg may offer a discount, a cheaper plan or a pause. Pausing does not cancel, so choose the option to continue cancelling if you want the plan gone.
    7. Give a reason if asked and confirm. Keep going until you see a confirmation that the subscription has been cancelled and an end date for your access.
    8. Screenshot the confirmation and check your email for the cancellation notice.

If you have several plans, for example an old add-on alongside Chegg Study, repeat the steps for each one. Cancelling one subscription does not cancel the others. Once you are done, reload the Orders page: it should show an end date, not a next billing date.

How To Cancel Chegg On iPhone When Apple Bills You

If you subscribed through an in-app purchase in the Chegg app on iOS, Apple holds the subscription. Chegg’s terms say app store purchases must be managed and cancelled through the app store’s own settings. The tell is a charge reading APPLE.COM/BILL.

    1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
    2. Tap your name at the top, then Subscriptions.
    3. Select Chegg from the active list.
    4. Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.

Apple keeps the plan running to the end of the paid period, and refund requests for Apple-billed plans go to Apple through its problem reporting page, not to Chegg. App store subscriptions also cannot use Chegg’s pause feature.

How To Cancel Chegg On Android Through Google Play

The same logic applies if you bought the plan through Google Play.

    1. Open the Google Play Store app.
    2. Tap your profile icon, then Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
    3. Select Chegg.
    4. Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.

Uninstalling the Chegg app does not cancel anything on either platform. The subscription lives in your Apple Account, Google account or Chegg account, not on the phone.

Why The Chegg App Will Not Let You Cancel

This is where most people get stuck. They open the Chegg app, look through the settings and find no way to end the plan. There are two reasons:

    • Chegg bills you, but the app does not show the control. Plans paid on the Chegg website are managed on the website. Open chegg.com in your phone’s browser, sign in and follow the website steps above.
    • Apple or Google bills you. Then neither the app nor the website can cancel it, and Chegg support cannot either. Use the App Store or Google Play steps.

A third, rarer case is signing in with Google or Apple on one device and with an email address on another, which creates two separate Chegg accounts. If Orders shows no subscription but you are still being charged, sign in with every method you have used.

How To Cancel The Chegg Free Trial

Chegg runs free trials and discounted first months on and off, often around the start of term. A trial needs a payment method and converts to a paid monthly plan automatically when it ends, unless you cancel. Chegg’s terms require it to show the recurring price, billing frequency and length of any promotional period before you enrol, so the trial end date is on your sign-up screen and in My Account.

    1. Check the trial end date in My Account, under Orders.
    2. Cancel with the same steps as a paid plan, on the website or through the app store that billed you.
    3. Do it a day or more before the trial ends. Leaving it to the last evening is how most unwanted first charges happen.
    4. Confirm the end date shows on the Orders page.

You normally keep trial access until the trial period runs out even after cancelling, so there is no reason to wait. Set a calendar reminder the moment you sign up, and do not count on getting a second free trial on the same account later.

    Pause Your Chegg Subscription Instead

If you only need a break over summer or between semesters, Chegg lets website subscribers pause a plan for up to six months. The option appears in the cancellation flow and in Orders.

    • How it works: start the cancellation steps, choose the pause option instead of continuing, and pick how long to pause.
    • What it costs: you are not billed while the plan is paused.
    • The catch: billing restarts automatically on the date the pause ends. If you will not need Chegg next term, cancel rather than pause.
    • Not for app store plans: subscriptions bought through Apple or Google Play cannot be paused through Chegg.

Textbook Rentals Are Separate: Return Them

Chegg’s original business was renting textbooks, and many students have a rental and a study subscription on the same account. They are completely separate orders.

    • Cancelling Chegg Study does not return a rental. A physical rental still has to be shipped back by its due date, with any supplements it came with, or you can be charged late fees or the purchase price of the book.
    • Find the due date in Orders. Rentals appear alongside subscriptions in My Account, with the return date and a return option or shipping label.
    • Keep the tracking number. If a return goes missing, proof of shipment is what gets a non-return charge reversed.
    • eTextbooks follow their own access window. A digital rental runs for the term you paid for, regardless of any study subscription.
    • Do not delete your account with a rental outstanding. Return the book and wait for the return to be confirmed first.

    Device Limits And Account Sharing

Some people cancel because they hit a device or sharing block, so it is worth knowing the rules. Chegg’s terms say accounts cannot be shared and that Chegg may impose reasonable limits on access, including the number of machines used. In practice, subscribers report a small number of registered devices and a limit on how often devices can be swapped.

    • Locked out after a new phone or laptop? That is usually the device limit, not a billing problem. Remove an old device from your account settings, or contact Chegg support to reset it, rather than cancelling.
    • Sharing a login with classmates can get the account suspended. A suspended account still needs its subscription cancelled, so check Orders or contact support if you cannot sign in.
    • A new device does not mean a new subscription. Signing in on another phone never creates a second plan, but signing in with a different method can create a second account.

If you want to rejoin later, you can resubscribe from the same account at whatever the price is at that time. Retention discounts offered during cancellation do not usually apply once you have gone through with it.

Cancel Chegg Or Delete Your Chegg Account?

Searches for how to delete a Chegg account usually come from people who just want the charges to stop. Cancelling does that. Deleting is a separate, permanent step for when you want your data gone.

To delete your Chegg account properly, cancel every subscription first, return any rentals, download anything you want to keep, then submit a deletion request through the privacy section of Chegg’s site or through support. Chegg’s terms note that it may keep certain information where the law allows, for example to complete transactions or resolve disputes, and content you posted publicly may stay up.

Can You Get A Chegg Refund?

Sometimes, but do not count on it. Chegg subscriptions are prepaid, cancelling stops the next renewal rather than refunding the current one, and partial months are not normally prorated. The situations where a refund is realistic are:

    • You were charged right after a renewal and have not used the plan. Contact Chegg support quickly, through chat in the Help section or by phone, and say you have not used the new period. Requests made within a few days of the charge and before any use have the best chance.
    • You were charged after cancelling. Send your cancellation screenshot or email. A charge after a confirmed cancellation should be reversed.
    • A free trial converted when you thought you had cancelled. Ask, especially if you can show you tried to cancel before the end date.
    • Apple or Google billed you. Refunds go through Apple’s problem reporting page or Google Play’s refund request, not through Chegg.

Approved refunds generally go back to the original payment method within a few business days, depending on your bank. Chegg may offer account credit or a free month first; you can decline that if you want your money back.

Cancellation is also a regulated issue for Chegg. In September 2025 the Federal Trade Commission announced a $7.5 million settlement over allegations that Chegg made cancelling hard and kept charging some customers after they cancelled. Chegg must now offer a simple cancellation method. If you were billed after cancelling, say so plainly when you contact support, and use a card dispute only as a last resort.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I cancel my Chegg subscription?

Sign in at chegg.com, click My Account, then Orders, scroll to Subscriptions and click Cancel Subscription, then confirm on every screen. If Apple or Google bills you, cancel in their subscription settings instead.

Can I cancel Chegg in the app?

Only through the app store if you bought it there. For website subscriptions, open chegg.com in your phone’s browser and use My Account, then Orders.

How much is a Chegg subscription?

In the US, Chegg Study is $15.95 a month and Chegg Study Pack is $19.95 a month. Check My Account for the price your plan actually renews at.

Does Chegg have a free trial?

Chegg offers trials and discounted first months at times, usually around the start of term. They need a payment method and convert to a paid plan automatically unless you cancel before the end date.

Do I keep access after cancelling Chegg?

Yes, until the end of the billing period you already paid for. After that, solutions and expert Q&A lock again.

Can I get a refund from Chegg?

Not automatically. Contact support quickly if you were charged for a period you have not used, or charged after cancelling. Apple and Google handle refunds for plans they bill.

How do I delete my Chegg account?

Cancel all subscriptions and return any rentals first, then submit a deletion request through Chegg’s privacy section or customer support. Deletion is permanent.

Does cancelling Chegg Study cancel my textbook rental?

No. Rentals are separate orders and must be returned by their due date, or you may be charged late fees or the cost of the book.

Can I pause Chegg instead of cancelling?

Yes, for up to six months on website subscriptions. Billing restarts automatically when the pause ends. App store plans cannot be paused.

Why am I still being charged after cancelling Chegg?

Usually the cancellation was not confirmed, the plan is billed by Apple or Google, or there is a second Chegg account. Use the troubleshooting table above.
