Meta description: What a Microsoft Solutions Partner designation proves, how partners earn it, what is replacing Azure Expert MSP, and how to check a claim before you hire.
A Microsoft Solutions Partner designation means a firm scored at least 70 out of 100 points on Microsoft’s partner capability score in one solution area, based on customer growth, certified staff, and customer usage and deployments. It shows the partner has real, recent activity in that area. It does not tell you whether the partner is right for your specific project, team size or industry, so treat it as a minimum filter, not a recommendation.
Microsoft Solutions Partner Designations Explained: What They Mean When You Hire A Partner walks through the Microsoft AI Cloud Partner Program in plain terms: the six designations, how they are earned, how specializations and other badges fit on top, what is changing with Azure Expert MSP in 2026 and 2027, and how to verify what a partner tells you.
The Microsoft AI Cloud Partner Program is the membership program for companies that sell, build on, implement or manage Microsoft technology. If a firm calls itself a Microsoft partner, it is almost always a member of this program at some level. Membership on its own is easy to get and says very little; the designations and specializations layered on top are what carry meaning.
For years, the Microsoft partner program was the Microsoft Partner Network (MPN), and buyers looked for Gold or Silver competencies. In October 2022, Microsoft replaced MPN with the Microsoft Cloud Partner Program and retired Gold and Silver competencies in favor of six Solutions Partner designations. In July 2023 Microsoft announced a second rename, to the Microsoft AI Cloud Partner Program, which is the name it carries today.
The practical takeaway: if a partner still leads with “Gold Partner” on its website, the claim is at least three years out of date. Some firms keep the legacy logo out of habit. Ask what they hold now.
Microsoft now organizes its partner go-to-market around three broader solution areas: AI Business Solutions (where Business Applications and Modern Work sit), Cloud and AI Platforms (the three Azure designations) and Security. Partner incentives and engagements are also run through a framework Microsoft calls Frontier Accelerate. The designations themselves keep their familiar names, so you will still see “Solutions Partner for Modern Work” or “Solutions Partner for Infrastructure (Azure)” on partner sites.
Each designation is scored separately using the partner capability score, which Microsoft calculates from data in Partner Center. Each solution area is worth up to 100 points, split across three categories.
To qualify, a partner needs at least 70 points in the solution area and must score above zero on every metric. That second rule matters to buyers: a firm cannot qualify on certifications alone without customers, or on customer volume without certified people. Once qualified, the partner pays to attain the designation.
Most areas have separate Enterprise and SMB paths with different thresholds, and Microsoft places a partner in a track based on its revenue and customer base. For Modern Work and Security, Microsoft evaluates both paths and uses the higher score. Performance and customer success data typically refresh by the 20th of each month and skilling data within about 10 days of a new certification, so scores move over time, and a partner can lose a designation if its numbers fall.
| Designation | Cloud Solution Area | What It Covers | Hire This Partner For |
| Infrastructure (Azure) | Cloud and AI Platforms | Azure compute, networking, storage, migration and hybrid infrastructure | Data center exits, VMware and server migrations, landing zones, Azure Virtual Desktop |
| Data and AI (Azure) | Cloud and AI Platforms | Analytics, databases and AI services on Azure | Microsoft Fabric, data platforms, Azure AI Foundry projects |
| Digital and App Innovation (Azure) | Cloud and AI Platforms | Building and modernizing applications on Azure | App modernization, cloud-native development, DevOps with GitHub |
| Modern Work | AI Business Solutions | Microsoft 365, Teams and endpoint management | Microsoft 365 Copilot rollout, Teams, Intune, tenant migrations |
| Business Applications | AI Business Solutions | Dynamics 365 and Power Platform | ERP and CRM implementations, Business Central, Power Apps |
| Security | Security | Microsoft security products across identity, data, endpoints and cloud | Microsoft Defender, Sentinel, Entra ID and Purview projects |
Many larger firms hold several designations. A partner holding all three Azure designations is often described as an “Azure Solutions Partner” in marketing copy, but Microsoft scores and awards each one individually.
A designation tells you a partner is active across a broad area. A specialization tells you it has proven depth in a specific scenario. Specializations require the aligned designation first, plus their own performance and skilling requirements, and many add an external check:
Current Azure specializations include Infra and Database Migration to Microsoft Azure, AI Platform on Microsoft Azure, AI Apps on Microsoft Azure, Analytics on Microsoft Azure, App Modernization on Microsoft Azure, Agentic DevOps with Microsoft Azure and GitHub, Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop, Microsoft Azure VMware Solution, Networking Services in Microsoft Azure, SAP on Microsoft Azure and Hybrid Cloud Infrastructure with Microsoft Azure Stack HCI. Security specializations cover Cloud Security, Identity and Access Management, Data Security and Threat Protection. Business Applications specializations include Finance, Sales, Service, Supply Chain, Small and Midsize Business Management and Agentic Business Solutions. Microsoft revalidates audits and customer references every other year, so an audited badge is never more than about two years old.
If you are hiring for a specific project, match the specialization to it. A firm migrating your SQL Server estate should ideally hold Infra and Database Migration to Microsoft Azure. A firm rolling out Copilot should hold the Microsoft 365 Copilot specialization. An audited specialization is the closest thing the program offers to third-party proof of delivery. For foundation work, also ask how the partner designs Azure landing zones and reviews workloads against the Azure Well-Architected Framework.
For years, Azure Expert MSP was the top badge for managed service providers on Azure. It required all three Azure Solutions Partner designations and a demanding independent audit of the provider’s managed services practice, so it was a strong filter when buyers shopped for a managed Azure provider.
Microsoft is now retiring the program. According to Microsoft’s Partner Center documentation on Azure Expert MSP (last updated August 19, 2026), Microsoft stopped accepting new Azure Expert MSP enrollments on September 15, 2026, and renewals close in January 2027. Partners whose anniversary date falls before then can still renew. Partners already enrolled keep their benefits through their anniversary date, and eligibility for certain engagements through Azure Expert MSP within Frontier Accelerate for Azure continues for Microsoft’s fiscal year 2027, which ends June 30, 2027. Microsoft names the new Frontier Partner specialization as the recommended path forward for eligible partners.
What this means for buyers in late 2026 and 2027:
Microsoft introduced the Frontier Partner specialization in 2026 to recognize partners that design, secure and scale AI agent solutions across Microsoft’s stack; trade press reported it became available on September 30, 2026. Microsoft lists it as a cross-solution area specialization, so it is not tied to a single designation, and it requires an audit. Reported requirements include four active specializations (Microsoft 365 Copilot, Data Security, Identity and Access Management, and either AI Apps or AI Platform on Microsoft Azure), five staff holding Microsoft’s Frontier Transformation Engineer badge, three holding the DP-600 (Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate) certification, and a third-party audit. Because it is new, few partners will hold it yet. Confirm it in Microsoft’s directory rather than relying on a logo.
FastTrack is Microsoft’s deployment and adoption help that comes with eligible subscriptions. FastTrack Ready partners are third-party firms Microsoft has approved to deliver FastTrack for Microsoft 365 services, working remotely alongside Microsoft engineers. Microsoft publishes a list of approved FastTrack Ready partners by region. Dynamics 365 has a separate FastTrack program with its own partner qualifications, so check which one a partner means.
Inner Circle is a recognition Microsoft gives each year to a small group of top-selling partners. The current version is the Microsoft AI Business Solutions Inner Circle for 2026 to 2027; earlier years were branded around Business Applications. Membership is based on sales achievement, so it signals scale and Dynamics 365 volume, not necessarily fit for a small or mid-size project.
Microsoft’s annual Partner of the Year awards recognize individual partners by category and country. They are worth noting, but they reward a specific submission in a specific year. Check the year and category before giving one much weight.
If you buy Microsoft licenses or Azure through a partner, the partner is part of the Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) program. CSP status is about how a partner sells licenses, not how good it is at delivery, but the two models differ in ways that affect you.
Neither model is automatically better for you. A direct bill partner controls the full support path; an indirect reseller may be a smaller, more focused firm with a capable distributor behind it. Ask who you call when a license or billing issue hits, and how escalations to Microsoft work. Our guide to what Microsoft CSP is covers pricing and contract terms in more detail.
Logos on a website are self-reported. Microsoft’s own partner directory, the “Find a partner” search on Microsoft’s site, is the better source, because Microsoft populates the designation and specialization badges on each listing from Partner Center.
A large firm can reach 70 points through sheer scale. A small boutique with deep expertise may hold one designation, or none, because it does not have the customer volume. For narrow, high-skill work, a well-referenced boutique can be the better choice.
The last question is worth asking directly. Microsoft funds some assessments and deployments through its partner incentives, which can lower your cost. It can also nudge a partner toward the products that earn it the most points or funding. A good partner will explain this openly.
Roughly, it is the successor. Gold and Silver competencies were retired in October 2022 and replaced by Solutions Partner designations. The scoring is different, though: designations weigh customer growth and usage alongside certifications, so the two are not directly comparable.
At least 70 out of 100 on the partner capability score for that solution area, with every metric above zero. Thresholds differ between Enterprise and SMB paths.
No. Microsoft stopped accepting new Azure Expert MSP enrollments on September 15, 2026, and renewals close in January 2027. Existing members keep benefits through their anniversary date, and related engagement eligibility runs through June 30, 2027. Microsoft points partners to the Frontier Partner specialization instead.
For large, multi-workload programs, a designation plus the relevant specialization is a sensible minimum. For a focused project, a smaller firm without a designation can be a good fit if its references and named engineers check out.
In short, a designation proves recent activity and certified staff in one area; a matching, audited specialization proves depth in your scenario; references and named engineers prove fit. Verify all of it in Microsoft’s directory, and remember that Azure Expert MSP takes no new members and closes renewals in January 2027.
