    Common questions

What is the difference between an executive search firm and a recruiter?

An executive search firm is usually retained by the hiring company to fill one senior role, and it maps the market and approaches people who are not actively looking. A recruiter or staffing agency typically works on contingency across many roles and is paid only when its candidate is hired.

How much do executive search firms charge?

Retained search firms commonly charge around a third of the hire’s first-year cash compensation, paid in instalments during the search. Some firms quote a fixed fee instead. Our guide to executive search fees explains the models and what to negotiate.

How long does an executive search take?

Most retained searches take three to six months from briefing to accepted offer, and longer for CEO, board or highly specialized roles. Notice periods can add several more months before the new leader starts.

How do you rank the firms on these lists?

Our editors check each firm’s own website for its offices, specialisms, published placements and leadership team, and compare that with independent sources. We look for firms with a clear focus and evidence of senior placements in that area.
