Short answer: go to HBOMax.com/subscription, sign in, select Cancel Your Subscription and confirm. Do it at least 24 hours before your next billing date. If there is no cancel button, Apple, Google, Roku, Amazon, Hulu, Disney+ or your TV, internet or phone provider is billing you, and you cancel there instead. Deleting the app does not cancel anything.
HBO Max is simple to cancel once you know who is billing you, and that is the part most people get wrong. The service has been sold through more channels than almost any other streamer: direct, through every major app store, as a Prime Video channel, as a Hulu add-on, inside the Disney+ and Hulu bundle, and as a perk on AT&T, Spectrum, Verizon, Xfinity, DIRECTV and other plans. Each route has its own cancel button, and HBO Max cannot end a subscription it does not bill.
The name causes confusion too. The service was called HBO Max until 2023, became plain Max, and switched back to HBO Max on 9 July 2025. It is the same app, the same account and the same subscription, so if you are searching for how to cancel Max, every step below applies. This guide covers each billing route, the Extra Member add-on, annual plans, refunds and the difference between cancelling and deleting your account.
Look at the charge on your bank or card statement, or open HBO Max, select your profile, then Subscription. That screen tells you the billing partner if it is not HBO Max itself.
| What your statement says | Who bills you | Where to cancel |
| HBO Max, Max or WarnerMedia (wording varies) | HBO Max directly | HBOMax.com/subscription |
| APPLE.COM/BILL | Apple App Store | iPhone Settings, your name, Subscriptions |
| GOOGLE *HBO Max | Google Play | Play Store, Payments and subscriptions |
| ROKU | Roku | my.roku.com/subscriptions |
| Amazon Prime Video Channels or AMZN Digital | Amazon | Prime Video Channels page, or Amazon Appstore subscriptions |
| HULU | Hulu (add-on or bundle) | hulu.com/account |
| DISNEY PLUS | Disney+ (bundle) | disneyplus.com account page |
| Samsung Checkout | Samsung TV | samsungcheckout.com, Subscriptions |
| Your phone, cable or internet bill | AT&T, Spectrum, Verizon, Xfinity, DIRECTV, Cox, Optimum, YouTube TV and others | That provider’s account portal or app |
HBO Max raised prices on every plan in October 2025, its second increase in two years. New subscribers paid the new rates straight away, monthly subscribers moved over from November 2025, and annual subscribers moved over at their next renewal. These are the US prices HBO Max lists in its help centre as of 2026:
| Plan | Monthly | Annual | What you get |
| Basic with Ads | $10.99 | $109.99 | Ads, 2 streams at once, 1080p |
| Standard | $18.49 | $184.99 | No ads, 2 streams, 1080p, 30 downloads, live sports |
| Premium | $22.99 | $229.99 | No ads, 4 streams, 4K and Dolby Atmos, 100 downloads, live sports |
| Extra Member add-on | $7.99 | Not offered | One extra person outside your household, direct billing only |
| Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max bundle | $21.99 with ads, $34.99 without | Not offered | Includes HBO Max Basic with Ads or Standard, not Premium |
Prices through app stores, Amazon, Roku and providers can differ, and taxes are added on top. The price on your own subscription page or partner bill is the one that counts. If cost is the reason, downgrading from Premium saves $4.50 to $12 a month.
HBO Max’s own help article says to cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid further charges. Cancel inside that window and the next month, or the next year on an annual plan, may already be charged, and HBO Max does not refund it.
Your billing date is shown on the Subscription page in your account. Partner billing follows the partner’s own cycle. You keep watching until the paid period ends either way, so cancel a few days early.
This is the route for anyone billed by HBO Max directly, which HBO Max’s help pages call WarnerMedia billing. It is the fastest and most reliable way to cancel.
Changed your mind before the end date? The same page shows Resume Your Subscription, and resuming keeps your plan and billing date with no gap.
The HBO Max app on a phone, tablet or TV is mostly a window into your subscription rather than a place to cancel it. Here is how to use it:
Uninstalling the app does nothing to your billing. HBO Max states this plainly, and it is one of the most common reasons people find charges months after they stopped watching.
If you subscribed inside the iOS app, Apple holds the subscription and the charge reads APPLE.COM/BILL. HBO Max cannot cancel it for you.
If HBO Max is not listed, you may have subscribed under a different Apple Account, or someone else is paying.
When Google Play bills you, cancel from the Play Store:
If HBO Max is not there, check you are in the Google account that made the purchase.
Roku is one of the most searched routes, because people often subscribe with the remote and forget Roku is the biller.
You can also do this on the TV: highlight the HBO Max channel on the Roku home screen, press the star button on the remote and choose Manage subscription. If HBO Max is not listed in your Roku subscriptions, you signed in to the Roku app with an account billed somewhere else.
Amazon can bill HBO Max in two different ways, and they are managed in two different places.
A Prime Video channel subscription is separate from Amazon Prime. Cancelling Prime does not necessarily cancel the channel, and cancelling the channel does not affect Prime. Our guide to cancelling Amazon Prime covers the membership itself.
This removes HBO Max and keeps your Hulu plan. To leave Hulu entirely, see our guide to cancelling Hulu.
This is the trickiest route, because the bundle is billed by whichever service you signed up through: HBO Max, Disney+ or Hulu. Two rules from HBO Max’s help centre matter most:
Our guide to cancelling Disney+ walks through the Disney account pages if Disney bills your bundle.
If HBO Max came with your phone, internet or TV package, the provider controls it. Here is where each one is managed:
| Provider | Where to manage or cancel |
| AT&T | att.com/myatt or the myAT&T app |
| Spectrum | spectrum.net, under your services, or Spectrum’s change or cancel service support |
| Verizon Fios or +play | verizon.com/home/myverizon |
| Verizon myPlan perk | My Verizon app, Account, Plans, Add or remove perks |
| Xfinity | my.xfinity.com |
| DIRECTV | Your DIRECTV account, add or remove premium channels |
| YouTube TV | tv.youtube.com, profile, Settings, Membership, Cancel next to HBO Max |
| Cox and Optimum | cox.com or optimum.net account pages |
| Samsung TV | samsungcheckout.com, Purchase History, Subscriptions, Unsubscribe |
Two cautions. First, when HBO Max is included in your plan at no extra charge, removing it rarely lowers your bill, so check before you call. Second, read the bill the month after a provider promotion expires, in case it rolled into a paid add-on. Our guides to cancelling Spectrum, cancelling Xfinity and cancelling YouTube TV cover those accounts in detail.
Warner Bros. Discovery renamed HBO Max to Max in May 2023, then restored the HBO Max name on 9 July 2025. Nothing changed for subscribers: the apps updated themselves, logins carried over and billing continued on the same date.
The only practical effect is in how the subscription is labelled. In Apple, Google, Roku and bank statements you may still see Max, MAX.COM or HBO Max depending on when you signed up. Treat them as the same thing. If you are trying to cancel a Max subscription in 2026, you are cancelling HBO Max, and the steps above apply exactly.
HBO Max now limits sharing to your household and sells an Extra Member add-on for $7.99 a month so one person outside your home can keep watching on their own login. Key rules from HBO Max’s help centre:
Annual plans cost about 16% less than paying monthly, but they carry the biggest risk. You can cancel an annual plan at any time, and you keep watching until the year ends, but HBO Max does not refund the unused months on directly billed plans. Cancelling in month two simply switches off the next renewal.
Not directly. HBO Max has not offered its own free trial in the US for some time, and that is still the case in 2026. Free or included access comes through partners instead: some wireless plans include HBO Max Basic with Ads, and provider and retailer promotions appear from time to time.
If you got HBO Max free through a partner, cancel with that partner, not with HBO Max. Some of these offers convert to a paid subscription when the promotion ends, so set a reminder a few days before.
Cancelling stops the billing. Deleting the account erases your data. Most people only need the first, and HBO Max requires it before the second.
| Cancel subscription | Delete HBO Max account | |
| Stops future charges | Yes | Only after you cancel first |
| Keeps profiles and watch history | Yes | No |
| Keeps downloads and settings | Until the period ends | No |
| Can come back easily | Yes, resubscribe any time | New account needed; old data is not restored |
| Time to complete | Immediate, access to end of period | Typically 4 to 5 weeks |
| Where to do it | HBOMax.com/subscription or your billing partner | HBOMax.com/account-delete, or Privacy and Legal in the app |
To delete your HBO Max account, cancel the subscription and wait for it to expire, then submit a deletion request at HBOMax.com/account-delete or in the app under Privacy and Legal, Delete My Account. HBO Max emails a final link that you must click to confirm. Deleting the account does not remove the app from your devices.
Rarely. HBO Max’s help centre says there is a no refund policy for subscriptions billed through HBO Max, and that includes partial months and unused time on annual plans. The exceptions are narrow:
Use a bank chargeback only as a last resort, for a charge you genuinely did not authorise.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
| No Cancel Your Subscription option | A partner bills you | Check the Subscription page for the partner name and cancel there |
| Charged the day after you cancelled | You cancelled inside 24 hours of the billing date | Cancel earlier next time; the charge is generally not refunded |
| Charged after deleting the app | Uninstalling does not cancel | Cancel at HBOMax.com/subscription or with your partner |
| HBO Max charges started after leaving the Disney+ bundle | A paused older HBO Max subscription resumed | Cancel it at HBOMax.com/subscription |
| Two HBO Max charges in one month | Two accounts, or direct billing plus a partner | Sign in to each account and check every partner in the billing table |
| A charge labelled MAX you do not recognise | An older subscription under the Max name | Treat it as HBO Max and find the biller with the table above |
| Free provider access turned into a charge | A promotion expired and converted | Remove HBO Max in your provider account |
If none of these explains it, contact HBO Max through the help centre with the charge date, amount and your confirmation screenshot.
Go to HBOMax.com/subscription, sign in, select Cancel Your Subscription and confirm. If a partner bills you, cancel through that partner instead.
Yes. There is no contract or cancellation fee, and you keep access until the end of the period you paid for. Cancel at least 24 hours before your billing date to avoid the next charge.
Yes. Max was renamed back to HBO Max in July 2025. It is the same service and the same subscription.
In the US, $10.99 for Basic with Ads, $18.49 for Standard and $22.99 for Premium, before tax. Annual plans are $109.99, $184.99 and $229.99.
Go to my.roku.com/subscriptions, find HBO Max, select Manage subscription and turn off auto-renew.
Open Manage Your Prime Video Channels, find HBO Max and select Cancel Channel. If you pay through a Fire TV app instead, use Amazon.com/appstoresubscriptions.
Not usually. Directly billed subscriptions are non-refundable. Partner-billed subscriptions follow the partner’s refund rules.
No. You must cancel through HBO Max or your billing partner. Deleting the app only removes it from that device.
Cancel and let the subscription expire, then request deletion at HBOMax.com/account-delete or in the app under Privacy and Legal. It takes about 4 to 5 weeks.
No. You cancel or change the whole bundle through the service that bills it, then subscribe separately to the services you want to keep.
